If your pressure gauge is hard to read due to oxidation on the plastic lens as in this video, you can use a car headlight restoration kit to remove the oxidation and apply the UV protectant in these kits to the lens. @@PoolSchooler I think I did - if not I will :) Here is an issue we are currently facing, and would appreciate your feedback. We soaked the cartridge filters in laundry detergent 1:5 and rinsed well (something we should probably have not done but it was recommended and so we tried it in order to clean the algae slimes and grease from the filter pleats) - So it looks like we did not rinse the filters well enough because we now have foamy spa/ pool. Lots of foam! We spent hours skimming the foams - no more mountains of foam but we still have light foam, especially when the spa or the water features are on. What should we do more? How do we get rid foams? Where we live, Algae is one of the main problems with pools due to the high temperatures. Although we use lots of pool chemicals to keep up with the heat and to slow down the constant growing algae, the filters get clogged easily ( the dirt and debris we get from the constant high wind does not help) - Our filters are only 1 year old and we have so far cleaned them 2x . Thank you for reading and any suggestion/feedback you can provide is much appreciated!
@@Astuu1 Unfortunately the foam is from the soap you used. And that soap will remain in the pool. And I think the only way to take care of that would be to change the water (wait til after summer though). Also, NEVER USE DETERGENT OR SOAP to clean your cartridges. Thank you for the awesome video I cleaned out my filters they were extremely dirty I noticed that the bottom manifold was cracked so I’m on my way to the pool store to see if I can replace it I just spent $700 yesterday on chlorine tablets in a brand new Phoenix Hayward pool cleaner

This is spot on. I have the same system and i clean my own filters and do it exactly the same way. Those filters though are i need of replacing. I might try the spray lube its probably less mess than the standard lube i been using
Glad it was helpful. Remember, those gauges sometimes are not super accurate especially as they get older. So although it’s helpful, I wouldn’t 100% rely on it.
Kenny, this was a good video. Lot's of good information. I just wish you would have talked about wear and how much diatomaceous earth we should use with this filter. Thanks
You should never put diatomaceous earth in a cartridge filter. This video is on cleaning a cartridge filter. I have a video on how to backwash and recharge a DE filter which tells how do you do exactly what you’re wanting. Remember you never ever want to add diatomaceous earth to a cartridge filter.
Last time I cleaned my filters I could not get the spring on the belly belt close enough. It blew! Sounded like a rifle shot top flew about 6 feet, water everywhere.Totally freaked me out. I'm about to clean them again & watched your video to remind me & I'm fearful especially after what you said here about decapitation & my last experience!! :(
If the belly band wouldn't fit around then you did something wrong with either putting the cartridges back or seating the top to the bottom. I'm glad no one was hurt. That can actually be fatal if your head is over the filter when it blows.
Is there any reason why an Above Ground Pool cannot use an In Ground Filter such as this one? I have a very large AG Pool and need to replace the filter. All the biggest filters are for In Ground Pools.
Great video! I have the single cartridge Hayward system and I find that hosing off the filer cleans the outside but not deep in the pleats. What’s your secret to cleaning these areas?
It's the nozzle I use. It gets pretty deep into the pleats and it's important to note that you really can never get the cartridges as clean as they were when new. But that nozzle gets deep enough to do the job. I got the nozzle at Lowes but you can also find them at Home Depot.
@@dvdmrrs2 Theres really no need to do that. The nozzle I use in the video gets plenty deep into the pleats and does a great job of cleaning the cartridges.
Make sure your o ring is clean and well lubricated and make sure there’s no cracks or breaks in the O-ring. Then also make sure that the channel on both halves of the filter canister that the O-ring goes into are completely clean, that’s typically where you’ll get a small trickle or leak. And usually that’s why too.
@@PoolSchooler I'm going to stop by lowes and get a can of that silicon spray you used and then remove the filter cover just to make sure everything looks good and see how it goes. I currently have gurgling in the pool since cleaning the filters also. I bleed the air valve and it clears up for about 10 minutes and then back to gurgling.
I've only watched 2 videos and have learned so much! Thank you!! I have a question - I have watched and read other pool people saying to soak or spray to wash the cartridge (after you've sprayed it clean with the hose). I noticed you didn't. Is it necessary or just another unnecessary thing to buy? Thanks so much!
@@dvdmrrs2 I'm familiar with such products and believe they are not necessary. ALSO because they "dissolve" the dirt and build up on on the cartridges there is a very good possibility that they can also speed up the the deterioration of the cartridge fabric themselves, thus shortening their life as well. I've seen some that have used a "solution" and it has more rapidly made the cartridge fabric "pulpy" and far less permeable.
You're welcome: Hope you’ll subscribe to my channel and also, please check out my website poolschooler.com for exclusive DIY pool maintenance tools and more direct and priority communication with my for your pool maintenance needs.
Great point. thanks for commenting. Sometimes the bands are broken up and it's hard to read. Also some of the cartridges do have a "Up" on one end of the cartridge to help as well. 👍
I can’t be too certain but my guess is… Yes… I would suggest contacting a company in your area that specializes in fiberglass pool and see what the ramifications are and how it can be done.
Thanks for the Vid! I just got a C3030 filter and have to clean it out for the first time. Do you recommend soaking the cartridges in muriatic acid or any other filter cleaner to get them extra clean?
No. I do not recommend that. If you watched my video, what I do with cartridge filters in in this video is exactly what I do with all of my cartridge filters. Think about it this way, if you so cartridges in muriatic acid that muriatic acid not only dissolves dirt and sediment, but it’s also dissolving part of the fabric and the cartridges. It’s not necessarily a bad thing but it will at the very least dramatically decrease the life of those cartridges. So personally I would say do it the way I show in the video and don’t do a bunch of other stuff and add a bunch of other chemicals into the mix. My philosophy is keep it simple and keep any chemicals to a minimum.
Good video however Hayward says not to lube belly band o ring. Just clean with clean water. You also should never tap band with anything but a rubber mallet. You could dent it and damage it.
For sure never tap the band with anything especially a hammer/mallet. RE: not lubing the belly band o'ring. Every pool svc person I worked for before I went out on my own ALWAYS taught me to lube any cartridge filter belly band O'Ring so I can't really say if I agree with the Hayward, and I could speculate that perhaps that by not lubing it it will wear out and crack sooner making people have to buy new ones more often. Not saying that's absolutely true but just a thought.
kimberj78az you have to remove the drain plug. If you’ve done that and it’s still not draining. Then something’s clogging that opening and you’ll have to clear it out.
Hello pool school! I have one question about the basket that is pretty much right next to the filter. When and how should I clean that? I think it’s blue and says “don’t remove under pressure.”

Good common sense advice and informative 👍
Great video! I have the single cartridge Hayward system and I find that hosing off the filer cleans the outside but not deep in the pleats. What’s your secret to cleaning these areas?
It's the nozzle I use. It gets pretty deep into the pleats and it's important to note that you really can never get the cartridges as clean as they were when new. But that nozzle gets deep enough to do the job. I got the nozzle at Lowes but you can also find them at Home Depot.
You could sit and open each pleat while spraying or get a pleat tool. You still won't get it 100% clean though.
@@dvdmrrs2 Theres really no need to do that. The nozzle I use in the video gets plenty deep into the pleats and does a great job of cleaning the cartridges.
Great video, learned a lot, thanx!!!

I usually flip the cartridges and wash the bottom off so the debris does not build up at the bottom of the cartridge.
I've done both either way is fine.
I end up with a little trickly leak every time. I think my pressure gauge is broken also. Thanks for the video.
@@patrickacox Hmm yup it definitely sounds like air is getting in there somehow. Double check your pump lid too.
Thank you, great video.

You got this. 😉👍
Not necessary.
Pool School m
There is a filter cleaner that in the past I soaked them in, but then you got to rinse them thoroughly. It is a longer process.
Awesome video…thank you!

Another way to know what is UP. The printing on the straps around the filter.
Great point. thanks for commenting. Sometimes the bands are broken up and it's hard to read. Also some of the cartridges do have a "Up" on one end of the cartridge to help as well. 👍
is there some paint or solution we can coat it with after the fiberglass has been exposed?
It's a great video. you just forgot to finish with adding the diatomaceous earth to the pool and how much. Thanks.
You don't add Diatomaceous Earth to a cartridge filter. Only a DE filter. This is a cartridge filter and you NEVER ADD DE TO A CARTRIDGE FILTER.
What do you do if after you remove the cartridges the water doesn’t drain out of the tank?
kimberj78az you have to remove the drain plug. If you’ve done that and it’s still not draining. Then something’s clogging that opening and you’ll have to clear it out.
Thank you sir 🙏🏽
Thank you
I painted my Hayward filter housing
To seal the glass fibers from getting all over you. Problem solved!
That was a great idea. Thank you for commenting. I used to hate getting those little fiberglass “needles“ in my skin. Nearly impossible to get rid of.
Hello pool school! I have one question about the basket that is pretty much right next to the filter. When and how should I clean that? I think it’s blue and says “don’t remove under pressure.”
That's your pump basket. This video will tell you how to safely and properly empty it: czcams.com/video/sHfHfgpEeto/video.html
