  • This video is about how to build a headway 38120s 50ah battery pack with a BMS. This is a DIY on how to build a 50ah battery pack and or power wall. Follow these instructions to build your own headway 38120s 50ah 14.6v 5p4s battery. You can find all the DIY parts needed over at our online store SolarGeni.com. I use 20 new headway 38120s cells in a 5p4s configuration to achieve 14.6v and 50ah. These packs are great for tesla power wall applications or for ham amateur radios, competition car audio, electric trolling motors etc.

    I noticed that you had forgot to mention that there are two types of headway cells .The (blue) wrap= is for more capacity. And the (red) wrap= is for high output. Over all if you need large amounts of amperage in a burst application. You need the red cells.

    I require some expert advice.
    I am building a 12.8v battery using 4 x 38120 headway cells.
    This will be used inside a car powering my project.
    I would like the cells to be charged from the car battery/alternator but using low current.
    The BMS says 50A charge current and I was hoping for more 5A as can be plugged into the cigarette socket to charge or trickle charge the pack.
    This way I can also fit some protection like a resettable PPTC fuse so when the project load requires high current, the fuse will trip and only current from the 38120 pack will be used.
    Is this possible or does the BMS really require 50Amps?
    Thanks

    • @WesThatTechGuy
      @WesThatTechGuy  Před 4 lety +1

      Easy answer is yes you can do this. You can also run a five amp fuse to the BMS and that would be fine also. The problem if any will be the direct voltage coming from your cars alternator to the battery pack. Just make sure that the voltage does not exceed 14.4 to 14.6 V EVER and you’ll be fine, otherwise you’ll have to put in a adjustable buck converter.

      If it's 4 in parallel and 4 in series, the voltage stays the same (determined by the number is series). What changes is the amp hours. 4 in parallel would be 40 Ah since each cell is 10 Ah.

    Hi Wes. I just bought 2 blue Headways from you on eBay. Nice batteries. I am confused over the amp hour you quote. If each battery has 10 amp hours and you put 4 in series for 12.8 volts don't you have 40 ah? So on a 20 battery setup that would be 200 ah - No? How come you say 50 ah? Thanks in advance and I shall buy from you again.

    • @WesThatTechGuy
      @WesThatTechGuy  Před 4 lety +6

      Izif thanks. if 4s with 10ah cells you will have 10ah only if 4p you would have 40ah. series connection doubles the voltage but amps stay the same. Parallel double the amps/amp hours but voltage stays the same. I used 5p in the video hence 50ah. Hope this helps.

    I have a question if you don't mind answering.
    I've got a 100A BMS and building a 12v battery.
    I will have charger constantly connected to the BMS (Car battery/alternator)
    When my project needs the power from the battery, is there a way to prevent any current being taken from the charging source?
    I was thinking a relay that opens when my project needs to use just the 12v battery.
    Can't use diodes etc as the charging source needs to charge the battery.

    Thanks for anyone willing to answer: i have built a small itx pc out of a 9x12 fancy vaultz case. amd, video card, powered by an m4 atx carputer variable voltage input powersupply. i have it wired to run from a 12v 200w power brick. works great. now i want to run it off some tesla 2170 batteries. 8 of em will fit into a 4s 9600ah arrangment, giving me over 120w. the system pulls 100 or less. so what i want to do is connect the 4s pack to the ps of 12 output, using a step up put out the 16.8 to charge the lithium 2170 4s pack also adding a bmi. i want the pc's ps to charge the 4s pack, but then also be able to run off of the 4s pack when powersupply is disconnected from wall. my question is, since 4s pack is gonna be connected and charging from the same ps it will also be feeding, how do i get it to work like a laptop battery, where its connected and charges while ps is plugged in to wall, but doesnt also give its own current to the ps. i dont know enough about bmi's or how to connect this in a way thay would work and is safe. let me know if you get what i mean. i wanna basically give the pc its own portable battery pack that can also be charged when plugged in to wall. ideas?

      you would want or red 38120HP batteries for that high of wattage stereo system. the bank in this video would be a max of 150a charge and 150a discharge. NOT recommended for a 5000w 12v audio amplifier. The red cells in the same size pack would allow for 1000a both discharge and charge current.

    Will this work and how do I calculate how many Kwh this will give me using 512 cells at 48vols.

    • @WesThatTechGuy
      @WesThatTechGuy  Před 4 lety

      Yes this will work fine. your kw rating is done by adding the number of cells in parallel and multiply them by the AH rating of each cell. so:
      10ah x 32P = 320ah or 15.36kwh @ 48v or 15,360wh @48v. glad to help. These are the best cells you can get, you can get more powerful ones like the 38120HP cells. What is your application these will be used for?

      Yes you can. it's the same voltage as your car battery. You can't throw you will need a amp specific buck converter if the pack has less than 8p because your cars alternator puts out around 225+amps. at 8p4s this pack can take 240a continuous charge. If you use the HP cells (red ones) than you can run a simple 4p4s pack and be fine.
