Great video as always. I really need to get another Princeps. I lost mine last winter. But the Princeps X Fortunei was absolutely fine. Both were about the same size and in exactly the same location, pot type etc, etc. But I do love a Princeps.
Thank you David. What temps did you get? Trachys in pots are less hardy as they freeze through but my Princeps has shown no damage at all even when it was smaller. Cheers
@@tikitropicals65 I think the issue with last Winter was the sustained minus temps. More than the overall minus temps here in Huntingdon, Cambs. Essentially period of minus temps throughout the day and night and never getting above freezing. I think we had 2 maybe or 3 periods of 7 - 10 days were this happened?

Enjoyed your video as always. I'm just starting my jungle garden this year and am prepping the ground. It's a bit on the clay side what is the best thing i could do to the ground for the trachycarpus 😊
Hi and thank you. If it’s clay but doesn’t stay water logged then Trachycarpus can cope quite well in clay. It’s worth digging a bigger hole than needed and adding some organic matter like compost or manure to mix in with the clay. If you get lots of standing water and your garden doesn’t tend to drain quickly then a raised bed may help. Saying that they are a tough old palm especially when more mature and can deal with being quite wet in winter.
How long after the tree planted will lives on it's on it's own without watering it? mine is in the ground for almost 2 years.
Hi. To be honest that’s hard to answer. It depends where you live and your climate. Your soil conditions. The size of the palm and many other things.
Trachycarpus is a palm that likes moisture but in the right conditions can also be quite drought tolerant.
I have an established one of 7ft of trunk now. Last year it started putting out lots of thick roots at it's base on ground level. Should these be covered over with soil? The palm is very happy and growing very thick and fast. Also planting around the base with other ground plants, how much room do you give it. Thank you
Hi. The roots at the base is fine and quite normal. It almost looks like the palm is pushing up out of the ground. You can cover but not essential. How close you under plant depends on the plants. If it’s small ground covering plants like grasses and ferns you can plant as close as you like depending on palm roots. If larger plants like shrubs it will depend on the size they can grow to.
