Tower of Terror is quite possibly my favorite anything to exist, ever. I cannot quite recall when I saw it for the first time, but my earliest memory is crying because I was not tall enough to ride it. The cast members at the entrance gave me a small certificate, signed by Mickey himself, and told me that when I was tall enough that I could come back and get to the front of the line for free. Ever since then, I have been enthralled with its every nook, cranny, and any detail about it, no matter how small. I came to love everything about it, and one day during one of my family's yearly summer vacations to WDW, some imagineers stopped my family and allowed me and my brother to "work" at Tower of Terror for the day. They gave us our own bellhop uniforms and took us on an entire tour of the ride: we got to sit on the couches in the lobby, they gave us lots of lore and trivia about the ride, and they even took us to the camera room at the bottom of the attraction once you exit. One of the cast members that toured with us (his name was Josh) was the best performance I have witnessed at any attraction. He pulled off an eerie bellhop better than anyone I have seen. He also gave me a copy of the ride's soundtrack. Ever since then, I have probably ridden ToT over three hundred something times. I just cannot get enough of how perfect and special this attraction is to me. It also prompted me to become obsessed with The Twilight Zone as well. It has inspired me, as well as all of WDW, to pursue my dream of becoming an imagineer that I hope to accomplish someday. My only fear is that it will get re-themed one day. I promise I will cry if that day ever comes.

You pretty much nailed everything that I know as well as some easter eggs and tidbits even I was unaware of. I think the only things I can add is that the "B" on the basement elevator door when you enter the ride vehicle separates into another "13" when the doors are open, and that the cast members watched all 156 episodes of The Twilight Zone to gain as much knowledge on the show as possible, if that was not mentioned in your video. I am always looking for quality content on the Disney parks, so you have my support!
It is me, Mark Silverman. I grew up watching so much Twilight Zone and I was obsessed with Disneyland and Walt Disney World, so getting the job to narrate a Twilight Zone ride for Disney seemed like a Twilight Zone episode in itself.

And you did such a phenomenal job. I grew up watching the Twilight Zone as well. My father had shelves of VHS recordings that he taped; it must have been nearly every episode (he loved the Twilight Zone as well) and I can't even try to recall how many times I watched through all of them. And not once until I researched this episode did I ever realize that it wasn't Rod Serling's voice the entire way through on the Tower of Terror (which I've been on dozens of times). Really, you are so great! All I can say is thank you about a thousand more times!!!
I can't agree with you more! I haven't watched it on television in years, but I really miss not knowing what episode I was going to get. There was a thrill in NOT knowing what level of awesome I was going to experience. I also don't think I participated in many Fourth of July's growing up, because there was always a Twilight Zone marathon and I circled my day off around it.
As a cast member who got to ride the "new randomized" test program in a cast exclusive night, sooo many times, as well as a guest who saw the billboard preconstruction, this has been a fav, the theming is pure Disney. Walt level.
From the only CM's who are allowed to not smile at guests, to the finale, quite a ride.
Got quite a shock at DL when it DID plummet down in the furst lift.!.
Don't believe the haters, the random intercuts of movie clips is your style, live it...

Love your channel. We first went on the ToT when it was new. Interesting that the safety belts that are on the ride now for each rider were not there originally. Each row had one lap bar. My husband is bigger than me and my two kids so when the ride dropped we really came out of our seats. It was really awesome. I suppose the “danger” factor would be why they installed individual laps belts. Always loved this attraction.
You're so absolutely right! The long lap bars made for more "air time" during the drops if you were with someone bigger. I had totally forgotten about that! I remember when I was younger always trying get the middle seat and tucking the seatbelt under my shirt so I could make the picture look like I was flying out of my seat. I pray Disney never re-themes this attraction, it would be a travesty. The whole Twilight Zone theme is spooky and really fits a haunted hotel theme. I love the historic nature to the whole thing. I love Guardians, but if they re-theme Orlando’s i’ll be upset!
Loved learning about the history, the hidden gems and the functionality of the ride system and how that works. This year at Disney I’ll be looking for these hidden gems in the hotel! I’ll also be thinking about how the ride works. Thank you! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for all of those compliments! Wow! I don't understand why Disney doesn't add a spooky attraction to the Animal Kingdom. I mean, they work so well at Disneyland, Magic Kingdom and Hollywood, that you would think they would try to keep the idea going. I understand why there isn't such an attraction at Epcot, it just wouldn't fit. But anyway, getting past all of that, I really appreciate YOUR appreciation for the attraction. It's seriously one of the best and I'm glad you enjoyed this episode and learned some fun stuff.

I agree they should add a spooky attraction to animal kingdom. I understand that they were going to have a dragon themed land at Animal kingdom and in the sign you can see the dragon. Sadly that just never happened. Did you do a video about that?

Couple of tidbits you might find interesting:
The motors in the top of the DHS ToT are 5k horsepower, not 2k.
After about a year of operation, the maintenance staff noticed stress cracks and fractures in the outer wall structures that shouldn't have been there. After some mechanical analysis and testing, it was determined that the ride vehicles were creating mini vacuums and high pressure fronts in the drop shafts when the vehicles were raised and lowered, due to the drop shafts being so well enclosed. To get around this, engineers opened holes in the sides of each drop shaft and themed them appropriately to compensate for the air pressure. Problem solved.
At one point, early in the ride's life, one of the 5kHP motors in the attic stopped working. Since the Imagineers built the motors into the attraction itself, never thinking that they may have to change them out someday, there was no way to get the motor out of the ride. The only solution was to partially tear off the top of one of the drop shafts, remove the defective motor, and put a new one in. Now you can see why the Yeti at Expedition Everest has been such a thorn in Imagineering's side.
There are 5 ride profiles. There is no random element to any of them. Any ride designer or engineer will tell you that allowing a massive industrial grade machine 'go random' is a recipe for disaster. Disney doesn't do disasters. The designer/engineer HAS to know what the ride is doing at ALL points of the ride at ALL times and adding a random element to a ride profile removes that crucial control aspect, meaning the ride would never be classified as safe for the public. You can't predict or control Random, so you can't build safety or compensation systems to account for it. Sure there are attractions that appear to have randomness in them, but in truth, all of the possible outcomes of the ride profile have been thoroughly worked out ahead of time.

@@disfarers You probably wouldn't have heard any of it unless you worked at WDW. And I suppose some of it is things the Company doesn't really want everyone to know about.
I worked at DHS both as an engineering intern and a ride technician in the mid-late 2000's. Met, chatted with and worked with LOADS of management, old mechanics, park engineers, sustaining engineers, technicians, and people who'd been around since the beginning of several of the parks. Also worked in QA for a while and was able to boast that I'd had my hands on EVERY Disney attraction at WDW at one point or another, including water parks. Had the benefit of a lot of TOTALLY behind the scenes looks at a LOT of things even my crew mates never had access to (benefits of being an engineering intern, and later QA, and having ultra-cool bosses, like the time 2 of us interns got a grand tour of the under-refurbishment Pirates of the Caribbean, or stood on the track just under the Yeti right before Expedition Everest opened). Best time of my life. Best job I ever had.
You've got great content here. Well researched and doesn't give credence to rumors and silly legends. Very refreshing when it comes to a Disney-based channel.
When I worked in Operations at the Magic Kingdom (Fantasyland of course), I met a TON of guests who knew more about Walt Disney than Walt ever did. A little scary to say the least. My hobby was learning all I could about my job and the machines (rides/attractions) that I worked on, including histories, improvements, etc.
As you can probably tell, get me talking about Disney parks and I tend to ramble.
I also left what I think is an interesting story on your Star Tours vid (yeah, I know it's a bit old, but...).
Oh, and ToT is my favorite attraction at WDW.

S'OK. I know life tends to get in the way of our plans.
What attraction would you like to know about? I'll tell you what I've experienced with it. Just remember, it's been a decade since my time at WDW, so I don't know much of anything about the latest additions, like Star Wars land or whatever they're calling it. Disneyland was building Cars land around the time I left Florida. As you can see, I was actually working in Disney QA when I made this account.
So just as an add to the Directory before the preshow rooms. If you look at the bottom of the tray, the letters have fallen to say "Take the Stairs"
Also, it is kind of a superstition that if the CMs do not say "Hello" to Caeser in the morning, the ride will have issues that day.
You're so right about the "take the stairs"! I have no idea why I didn't add it. I remember learning about it, yet it didn't make it into the script for some reason. But I had absolutely no clue about cast members having to say hello to Caeser in the morning! That's so awesome! I totally would have added that if I had known about it. The first thing that stood out to me after taking the time to think about this installment was how CLEAN it felt. More so than I think any of your videos thus far, quite frankly. Your editing was on point and perfectly paced, the music choices were phenomenal and at the perfect volume, your dialogue was very well put together, and the information you provided felt like it covered everything while also not being overwhelming. Your usage of clips unrelated (directly) to the ride itself for comedic effect was also great and I very much appreciated how you often used them to make clean transitions between points.
Learning about the history of this ride, the many Twilight Zone easter eggs scattered throughout, the engineering behind the ride, and the individuals involved in it was fantastic! Of the videos you have posted so far, this is easily my personal favorite!

@@disfarers Honestly, I didn't spot too much that needed to be immediately addressed! If i had to pick something, it'd be that you didn't go into much detail about the other two versions of the ride! It would have been cool to have bit more info about them and what makes them unique (apart from their exteriors). That having been said, the runtime of this video would've been longer as a result so it may have been best to leave it as brief as you did!
Like I said, this episode is easily my favorite so far. But it's not just because of the content; it's also because of how well you put everything together. As another commenter said, it really feels like we are watching the beginning of the next great Disney related channel!

As for the other two towers. I've honestly contemplated about making one episode per year about other great attractions from one of the other Disney parks overseas. And if I did I would have to cover one of the other towers because of a certain someone in my circle. So because of that, I kept them brief.
So glad you liked the pacing and runtime. I felt I could have slowed things down about 5-10 percent more but overall I'm happy with the editing. I was thinking of putting together a five minute long episode, keeping it short and sweet just to change things up. What do you think?

As for your pacing, try it! I thought it was fine personally, but slowing it down a bit more might not be too bad.
And finally, on the shorter episode, I think that would work really well! Especially if you have some attractions, people, or general Disney stuff you want to discuss that might not warrant a full on episode. Could be a "Disfarer's Shorts" kinda deal!

The wire ‘track’ that emits radio signals was first used at The Great Movie Ride. A different signal was used for each vehicle, known as the A and B vehicles for the show scenes in which guests were ‘kidnapped’ by either a gangster or a bandit, as well as their stopping points along the track. At each stop along the way, the vehicles would connect to a charger beneath the vehicle. The vehicles on the Great Movie Ride were not automatic. The tour guide would “check-in” by pressing two buttons, so the vehicle would move and then change the speed depending on the scene, in order to create enough space between the vehicles along the way. Naturally, the steering wheel was fake, though. There is no way a tour guide could safely navigate those tight corridors and turns.
It has been said that the lights in the mirror-like star field at the end of the 5th dimension converge into a Mickey head just before the light turns vertical and the doorway opens to the drop shaft.

I was a tour guide at GMR for a bit back in the mid 90s when it was sponsored by Coca Cola. Tour guide had to stay word-for-word on script, which I believe was 22 pages long. This was long before the refurbishment that added the AMC host recording. When the Studios opened in 1989, GMR was the most advanced ride in the world. Now the technology seems quaint.

I have a love/disregard relationship with Hidden Mickey's. I personally love knowing about all of them, want to know where they all are, go out of my way to locate them. On the other hand, it always seems to make my episodes drag the moment I bring them up. And yet, if there's interesting stuff that isn't a hidden Mickey but a hidden "something-or-other" it comes across as pretty interesting. I wish I knew why it works out that way, but there it is.

Very good video. Note, Rod Serling did do a part of the narration. The video clip and audio of Rod were from the episode "It's a good life". Rod says "Tonight's story on The Twilight Zone is somewhat unique and calls for a different kind of introduction. This, as you may recognize, is a" And the new narrator picks up at that point, "maintenance service elevator". In the episode, points to a "map of the united states". On the ride he points to a "maintenance service elevator".

FUN FACT: when Disney went to Otis about doing a “drop shaft” ride, Otis originally declined, saying, “We have spent our entire career making sure elevators DON’T drop like that!!!”

First time I rode it, when I got off, I said to the cast member, “where does it go now?” And he promptly opened the elevator doors and let me watch the car back up and move over into the load shaft!!!

Trivia: The 5th dimension tunnel is supposed to be sideways looking up (look at the signs and lights). There was supposed to be an additional effect where the hallway turns but the effect was cut. But the sideways tunnel remains

@@disfarers I rode with an imagineer who told me to look at the signs. When I asked why they were sideways he told me about the planned effect but the ride was over budget so it was scrapped :)

Cool video. And You mention the one library being called "Echo". Later, you should a diagram showing the 4 elevators up called alpha through delta, with the drop shafts being called Echo and Foxtrot. 2 drop shaft, 2 libraries and 1 called Echo in both regards. If The echo library matches to the Echo drop shaft, then I'd guess that The library that precedes the Foxtrot drop shaft would be called Foxtrot? It is a guess.

Very well made video! As a fan of Tower, I love videos like this that go into the lesser known Easter eggs or facts. SMALL NOTE THOUGH, I don't think it's true that they misplaced the sign on the front of the building. While the sign is higher in the matte painting during the preshow, the actually imagineering model of the tower shows the sign in the same location as it is in real life.

@@disfarershey man no problem! Also yeah, I saw the 1992* model of the tower in the waiting area for One Man's Dream. I don't know if it's still there since they rotate out the exhibit props but it was cool to see in person. The model is shockingly spot on with the major noticeable difference being the very top middle spire was included. It was removed for the real tower to keep the it under the limit for the airplane light inclusion. The scar on the model is also painted similar how it appears today unlike the opening day scar which was more similar to DCAs color scheme and size. (I honestly know too much about this ride I swear).
You totally sound so knowledgeable though! It looks like I'm going to be at Hollywood Studios this weekend so I'll check to see if the model is still One Man's Dream. Fingers crossed. I know things are always changing. It would be great to see the 1993 imagineer's model with my own eyes.

@@disfarers yeah no problem! Hope you got some good pictures of that model, it still amazes me how despite it's age it's almost a perfect replica of what was actually built. Insane, the imagineers had such a clear vision for Tower of Terror and it shows.
The only mispronounced word that stood out to me was (and I had to rewind to verify) was at 2:11 where you said, "debuting." As in "day-byoot-ing" when it should have been "day-byoo-ing" (no T). [Only commenting because you asked] Still though, you have a talent, and are producing great content! Keep it up!
Hey, thanks for commenting! And you're right, I absolutely say it wrong and have said it wrong in several episodes. But no more. After comments like yours, letting me know that I said the word incorrectly, I (re)recorded the audio for December's episode and I will have you know that it is pronounced correctly.

Are you sure about WDW No Fly Zone? I tought it was only Magic Kingdom. I've done several Helicopter Tours from Orlando/Kissimme, and they fly above all the parks (except MK) because of that reason.
I'm not certain about the exact parameters or how close or what not, but I recall specifically researching this during the scripting of this episode and I don't believe anyone other than Disney themselves are allowed to use the airspace above all of Walt Disney World. So I really don't know what to say in relation to your helicopter tours. Thanks so much for watching, commenting and healthy curiosity!
@@disfarers I included some details on the reply to my reply. It's a 3 mile radius, and the center point is in Bay Lake, so MK is a no fly zone, and a sliver of Epcot. All the other parks are out of the no fly zone. I included a post to the NOTAM notice as well as an image of the not fly zone area.
That's really interesting about the 3 mile radius. I wonder why they never bothered to expand it to include the other areas? I'm knee deep in a new episode atm to look it all up right now, but I'll be revisiting this topic for sure. Thanks so much for sharing.

You see Helicopters directly over Epcot and other parks but never MK
I've looked deeper into this because of other comments and I believe helicopters fly to the edge of Disney property but not directly over any of thier property. If you look at a map of their property you can see that the other parks are at the edge of thier property line but the MK is deeply surrounded by land. Also, I've obviously been to the parks many times and though I've seen helicopters, I don't ever recall one being directly over me. (But that last part's just anecdotal)

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it. I did watch many other youTube videos and tried to fill it with as much new material as I could. There are a number of things I didn't find on other channels, though I'd have to admit that youTube is huge and I of course couldn't have possibly watched every one of them regarding the Tower of Terror.
