@Eric Bowman Shorter backup weapon is an option and you'll notice that there's typically more than one cop using these things at once, which since you've only got two hands prevents you from grabbing all of them.
@@manofwill2468 I recommend you check out the principles of levers. You may be rather alarmed by the force multiplication a simple eight foot rod will give you.
The issue i see with the locking design is more moving parts = more points of failure. The simple yet sturdy design might be the right way to go for these. Great tool, though! Would definitely like to see these "imported" to western countries
@@jonathanbowen3640air enough, but a non-locking design is better for another reason. If you thrust with one that locks, miss, and it is bumped or deploys when you pull back on your thrust, it is now locked closed with your target not inside. @@LynxxXVI this would make it effectively as useful as the unmodified version; the point of the locking mechanism is to prevent the target from relieving pressure on themselves by pushing back
I feel like this could be improved by adding an unlock button to the handle. So the user can still unlock the grabbers, but the one who was captured cannot.
The grasping mechanism could probaby be upgraded to provide greater control with a spring loaded ratcheting mechanism. This would let you close it further, and if you have some sort of trigger the springs could allow it to snap open if they force it closed.
Back in the late Ming Dynasty, a general literally equipped some of his men with something similar called an 'antler-pike', that was used against Japanese pirates.
If I had a say on a professional use design, I'd make sure that not only the arms are spring loaded to open, but also make it so the arms can be locked closed/unlocked via a mechanism on the handle.
I did a thing I mean you could stop trying to stab the person put your arms together and lift the ring above your head if you are against a wall or not against a wall or parry an approach from such a contraption by pushing the whole stick up or down to wear you can step over it or it just goes over you

They might wanna have a backup weapon. try this again but simply move you feet back quickly then force your upper body forward and down
Ratchets instead of lockpins so not only can it catch people slightly too big/around larger areas like a torso, but can progressively trap people who are fighting against the jaws before they manage to shut. Trigger on the handle for quickrelease and springload open so you can reset it after a miss/just letting the person go
One point (no pun intended) about your design, the tips should be flared and/or rubberised. Mostly people you'd try to catch would attempt to sidestep, so they're likely to land on the tip. Mancatchers used in China (all?) have tips designed to prevent accidentally impaling a suspect. But it's a great design idea

You could also add barbe wire only on the non facing side & the initial pile part coming off the grabber, as that would prevent pushing it off or pushing / pulling on it without getting hurt
I am trying to think of complicating factors besides the obvious things of training, cost, distribution, and the eagerness or lack thereof for the people to adapt to them. 1. A concern of mine is portability. How easy would it be to carry it around, put it in your car, take it out of your car, and the like. My first thought was the possibility of a collapsing mechanism like an extendable baton, but I recall reading that extendable batons have a lot of trouble with durability due to their construction being hollow and their use being blunt force. In addition, I can see the ability to rapidly deploy the extendable man catcher as a potential issue. Anyone in the comments have any potential complications they want discused or any potential solutions?
A complication I thought of but realized was a bad idea. The thought was that the assaulter could bang down on the stick as hard as they could, lowering the place where the officer was pushing causing them to stumble forward due to pressing against air instead of a solid mass. Then I realized that is where the feet are and that would have you face plant right into the ground
I'd imagine you want them to do that, because it leaves them defenseless! Knife attackers are generally impulsive ones (few people put a lot of planning into picking up a knife and going around stabbing people), and most likely not trained in proper knife throwing. So they would be unlikely to seriously harm someone, plus they'd have no more weapons.
Spine-less sasumata does not violate Japanese law as a weapon, it can be found at the ticket gates of urban train stations, and its use is sometimes considered in school. It is an effective tool when the opponent is not armed and does not have anything to throw. However, I think having this backside-front wouldn't it be more effective to like a spear? Not all station staff, not all teachers are accustomed to handling sasumata. I think it would be more effective if it’s used use like a spear like object.
I feel like all of your videos are just solid memes and hilarious. While this video too was hilarious your design is actually so good and effective, why have they not taken this design yet.
There is a LOT of situations where a person could experience psychosis. Unfortunately some ladies with ADHD have to deal with that because of the total bottoming out of dopamine during periods. Its awful and it hurts so much to see. Sweet wonderful nice people losing it. Its horrible ;-; Ive experienced psychosis a number of times for different reasons. If i drink too much and dont eat enough it turns off some vital part of my reasoning capabilities and i lose my mind. I experienced psychosis with something else years ago as well. imagine like a sleek carbon fiber version of this with a super fast spring loaded or even electric locking mechanism... that's it... the entire idea... I'm done... ah fuck it add an inbuilt taser
Any chance I could get the plans? I work in a school and we've had some people working to break in with knives and such recently. It'd be a shame to be left with nothing except a fire extinguisher for defense.
I got this recommended and saw in the thumbnail, "Man Catcher" at first I was like are they forreal? Then I saw it was one of your videos and everything made sense.
The man catcher could be made with bulletproof material thats higher than the man and can touch the ground so the man is stuck in a chamber So basically its a portable containment chamber
This seems to be an actual really good against people who are tripping out. But frankly, I do think that it would definitely scare the living crape out of someone high off something like pcp. Like imagine having a massive trip, and next thing you know you see this huge clawed monster coming out you. Edit: Ok, some of you people don't seem to understand that this is a joke. Please stop taking a silly statement so seriously.
Fair, and like they'd probably need like therapy or something if the trip truamatized them, but in the moment it's likely worth it to stop anyone that's out of control without, ya know, electrocuting them.
These were common in villages in Malaysian villages where there was a problem with villagers going crazy. They had barbs on the inner faces and were pushed aroung the suspect. The villagers were known to run amok( Malay word) and these were called amok catchers and hung in the village squares.
The idea behind this design is very well thought out and comes from a good place in his heart, but the thumbnail is so utterly horrifying I can only imagine this being used to catch victims for a human meat farm or something lmao
I can imagine canadian mounties on horseback hunting down people with these things. Or better yet: British aristocrats and royals hunting poor people. Yeah, Charles III and Caroline riding horses, chasing peasants across the vast open fields of... uhh... wherever there are vast open fields in England.
I mean, I'm a bit confused by the attempts with version one. It's essentially a polearm so there is no point in trying to push against it, the way to deal with it is to grab it by the shaft, deflect and/or sidestep it and then close in. You can simply do that by grabbing it, stepping back and moving to the side. That being said, they don't use them one on one, there is a reason they gave multiple people pin one person.
@@linkskywalker5417 in countries with less armed idiots and well trained police forces they definetly already work. But obviously not in the US. (about the knife throwing: restrict the arms, problem solved, as least as much as a melee tool can help against ranged/thrown weapons )
If you made it so that there is no gap, and the mechanism was like basically stuck, you could make so that anybody caught by the catcher couldn't escape it, even if the officer went down, the catcher would be stuck,.so it would hinder the person in movement
Nice invention that’s awesome! Depending on the setup I think that would be an awesome idea. An even more less than lethal option like a taser. Plus tasers suck 66% of the time don’t work.
Downsides: The long handle will keep the wielder of a melee weapon out of range, but not the wielder of a gun. Fitting one of these in a patrol car trunk would be a pain, unless a telescoping handle could be designed. This would weaken the handle. Upsides: The pole design can be stored compactly with other mancatchers in SWAT vans. In extreme situations, a shield can be affixed to the handle, allowing the be of both worlds (distance and protection). Conclusion - Deploy mancatchers for crowd control such as clearing protests or riots.
master musashi teaches not to rely on the length of a weapon, less maneuverable and easily countered in a 1v1 by a skilled tachi wielder. they also arent as useful in multiple combat scenarios. lets say spear vs bow, spear user will be at an insurmountable disadvantage. tachi vs bow with its quick movement options while still at a disadvantage has a greater chance of deflecting the arrow and using the window to close distance. in large scale warfare the spear only only excelled when protected by shield walls, due to its all out attack and low strength ( easily broken especially against armor.) Hammers maces and blunt weapons are what truly dominated battlegrounds due to the quick rise of maneuverable full body armor, but before that yes it was spears protected by walls of shields.
@@MsDestroyer900 its true blunt weapons were very effective in large scale battles; people underestimate how hard it is to use swords and spears correctly without damaging an ally next to you.
I feel like a right angle handle, like the ones on some batons, would make it easier to us. The wielder would have a lot more power and control, it would be harder to yank it out of the cops hands.

There is a LOT of situations where a person could experience psychosis. Unfortunately some ladies with ADHD have to deal with that because of the total bottoming out of dopamine during periods. Its awful and it hurts so much to see. Sweet wonderful nice people losing it. Its horrible ;-;

what a tragic and emotional story
I got this recommended and saw in the thumbnail, "Man Catcher" at first I was like are they forreal? Then I saw it was one of your videos and everything made sense.
American cop: catches man with man catcher
Caught man: pulls out gun
how dy that’s generally how that would turn out.
Exactly what i thought
and becoming great mates
The man catcher could be made with bulletproof material thats higher than the man and can touch the ground so the man is stuck in a chamber
So basically its a portable containment chamber
You fool
This seems to be an actual really good against people who are tripping out. But frankly, I do think that it would definitely scare the living crape out of someone high off something like pcp. Like imagine having a massive trip, and next thing you know you see this huge clawed monster coming out you.
Edit: Ok, some of you people don't seem to understand that this is a joke. Please stop taking a silly statement so seriously.
Fair, and like they'd probably need like therapy or something if the trip truamatized them, but in the moment it's likely worth it to stop anyone that's out of control without, ya know, electrocuting them.
Cops should learn jiujitsu and wrestling, then use these man catchers. Solid af
Somewhere, there is probably a he tai with this exact same premise
gettin a gun pulled on you by 5 police officers is probably still scarier i reckon
Not if you're used to seeing them used by police, like in China apparently
These were common in villages in Malaysian villages where there was a problem with villagers going crazy. They had barbs on the inner faces and were pushed aroung the suspect. The villagers were known to run amok( Malay word) and these were called amok catchers and hung in the village squares.
So I teach English in Japan, and we have these things in every school. I always assumed this is what they were for, but thank you for confirming.
The idea behind this design is very well thought out and comes from a good place in his heart, but the thumbnail is so utterly horrifying I can only imagine this being used to catch victims for a human meat farm or something lmao

Push it down and you win everytime... you even get a nice stick to pull your victim close to you.
You should ad some kind of shield at the end in case they throw the knife
*add
I mean, I'm a bit confused by the attempts with version one.
It's essentially a polearm so there is no point in trying to push against it, the way to deal with it is to grab it by the shaft, deflect and/or sidestep it and then close in.
You can simply do that by grabbing it, stepping back and moving to the side.
That being said, they don't use them one on one, there is a reason they gave multiple people pin one person.
Yeah
Police in China: restrains a man
Man: starts throwing knives
Police: sweats profusely
Do you think mancatchers are effective?
@@linkskywalker5417 honestly I think they would be very effective as they keep both party's safe
@@linkskywalker5417 in countries with less armed idiots and well trained police forces they definetly already work.
But obviously not in the US.
(about the knife throwing: restrict the arms, problem solved, as least as much as a melee tool can help against ranged/thrown weapons )
If you are pinned to a wall, it is difficult to throw a knife with any appreciative force because you can't draw your arm behind your back.
To solve that: use a little shield at the end of the stick
If you made it so that there is no gap, and the mechanism was like basically stuck, you could make so that anybody caught by the catcher couldn't escape it, even if the officer went down, the catcher would be stuck,.so it would hinder the person in movement

Downsides:
The long handle will keep the wielder of a melee weapon out of range, but not the wielder of a gun.
Fitting one of these in a patrol car trunk would be a pain, unless a telescoping handle could be designed. This would weaken the handle.
Upsides:
The pole design can be stored compactly with other mancatchers in SWAT vans.
In extreme situations, a shield can be affixed to the handle, allowing the be of both worlds (distance and protection).
Conclusion - Deploy mancatchers for crowd control such as clearing protests or riots.
the 8:04 part really made me laugh out loud as I really didn't expect that!
This easily shows why spears and pikes were literally some of the most powerful weapons in an army's arsenal.
master musashi teaches not to rely on the length of a weapon, less maneuverable and easily countered in a 1v1 by a skilled tachi wielder. they also arent as useful in multiple combat scenarios. lets say spear vs bow, spear user will be at an insurmountable disadvantage. tachi vs bow with its quick movement options while still at a disadvantage has a greater chance of deflecting the arrow and using the window to close distance. in large scale warfare the spear only only excelled when protected by shield walls, due to its all out attack and low strength ( easily broken especially against armor.) Hammers maces and blunt weapons are what truly dominated battlegrounds due to the quick rise of maneuverable full body armor, but before that yes it was spears protected by walls of shields.
@@m9imgr7 pls tell me you're trolling
@@MsDestroyer900 its true blunt weapons were very effective in large scale battles; people underestimate how hard it is to use swords and spears correctly without damaging an ally next to you.
@@idiot4177 I'd have a hard time damaging an ally next to me with a spear, even if i wanted to.

Solution to knife attacks:
Kidnap the attacker and befriend them
And then get stabbed many times by your friends. Just like Caesar :D
@@lick28 :D just like my friends
That had more twists than I expected
I feel like a right angle handle, like the ones on some batons, would make it easier to us. The wielder would have a lot more power and control, it would be harder to yank it out of the cops hands.
