These guys were scary good 1980/1981. One of the greatest bands in the world. The issue is that the 81 material, Jaco had to learn on stage with the sheet music, because the self entitled WR album was released in 82. The problem with that is, management didn't tell Joe & Wayne that they had to go on tour to support the new music (which they had already did the previous year in 81). The issue that arose was Jaco also putting out his Word of Mouth LP late in 81, and going on his own tour in 1982. This in turn led to Jaco and Pete having to depart from WR. By 1982, Joe and Wayne had to recruit a new rhythm section to go on tour or they would have to pay the $75K in fines. Usually Zawinul would have WR record the album in studio first then support the album with a tour, they decided to do it backwards here and it backfired on Jaco in hindsight.

Jaco knew Joe would never fire him so he took advantage of it and did anything he wanted. Jaco took them to the next level when they were just a college band. It sucks Jaco had a mental breakdown in 1984. He was already nuts but the pressures of being a bandleader, WB dropping him, and having 4 kids to support sent him over the edge

@@PhuckHue2 yep, he basically financed/bought two of the houses for both of his wives, but then he ends up homeless. It tears me up. Guys like him and Shawn Lane couldn’t capitalize on their talents monetarily like Miles did. But Jaco never really left the band, it’s just the timing and the. Fact that Jaco was the best bass player with only that one album out. Meanwhile guys like Stanley Clarke had put out like 6 or 7 albums by 1980. So Jaco felt like a sideman with all that music he needed to release, while WR kept having their European and Asian tours never allowing Jaco enough time to do his solo projects. Jaco on the other hand should have stayed with Epic/ Columbia records. The executives, would have been like, “this is the bassist who is with WR and will be making more money for us,”, but he went to the other side where it was greener, but not for the long haul. If he would have stayed with CBS , they would have given him more musical freedom to make records. Your point is right as well.

@@flame-sky7148 you’ve got this ass about face. Saying WRs European and Asian tours didn’t leave Jaco enough time is bullshit. They didn’t exist to help Jaco Pastorius to build his career. It was Joe and Wayne’s band. They did not need Jaco to make great music. They made that b4 and after him. If he didn’t like his commitment to the band he could have fucked off. Weather Report made Jaco famous, not the other way around.
He was a sideman, hired and fired. A great one, but a sideman. His story is a tragic one but it is a tragedy of mental health, nothing more or less. His performance here is unprofessional and unacceptable.

@@flame-sky7148 haha. I have energy enough to post and fuck too, don’t worry. My musings aren’t meant to be a personal attack and I think you probably broadly share my point of view, that there needs to be a correction about Jacos history, he was not the main actor in the WR story.
I’ve just had some Cucumber Slumber, ( the best bass outing on any WR record) and look forward to the Pursuit of the woman with the feathered hat tonight.....

@@nickandthecrisis Thats not Victor playing its a bass synth loop. Victor said in an interview he can't play it. Jaco can actually play it but around this time he started drinking and doing drugs so he was out of it. I play bass and its a very difficult bass line that can give you tendonitis. I can play it perfectly for maybe a minute. When I was younger I could almost play it to the end
