But had he really been an illegal alien, he would have gotten cellular service, cash, free room and board in a 5 star 🌟 and more if he was in LA, New York San Francisco, Seattle Portland,

Joe and the Crook both implied the"Marks" are just as dishonest as the Crook. Why? Because they tried to negotiate the best price they could. Huh? So negotiating the price of an item is dishonest? If they were dishonest they would have took off with the diamonds after they had them appraised.

It is a standard trope that most scams are played on people who are trying to "get rich quick", to get something for nothing or to take advantage of a situation; think about how this plays out over and over again in "The Sting". There are exceptions: there was a previous Dragnet radio episode on the "marriage scam" (single woman/spinster seduced into engagement and advancing money to man who then disappears), and in a TV episode in the late-1960's, Joe and Bill Gannon (Harry Morgan) express their disgust over the scam artists who run the "bank examiner" routine on senior citizens who are just being helpful (and also have bad eyesight) as opposed to the bunco victims who are trying to get something for nothing.
