On top of a red sandstone mountaintop, nestled around the trees, lies a spectacular abandoned castle that could be straight out of a Disney movie. With its numerous bay windows, battlements and towers, and many playful details, the neo-Gothic complex offers a picturesque sight.
In the late 1800s, the lifelong dream of a German baron was fulfilled and the foundation stone of this majestic castle was laid. Oddly enough, a few years later, he already sold the stalled building to a German-born industrialist from Manchester. This English baron completed the building and expanded it in the early 1900s with an extension. His family owned the entire complex until 1989. Five years later, the castle was again bought by another person that invested in the building and the access roads. Although the man passed away in 2010, he had made the castle publicly accessible after it could only be visited in rare cases. Shortly before his death, in summer 2009, he opened an excursion cafe with a local hotelier, offering fine views over the valley and mountain ranges in its vicinity. With help from the municipality, it was from this point also being used to host weddings and other large private celebrations, such as New Year's Eve and Halloween events. But unfortunately, the hotelier's contract was not extended beyond the end of 2017. Without legal protection, he could inevitably not invest in the castle anymore. The castle has been empty since then, yet it has been put up for sale again from 2020. As things stand now, no interested investors have been found to save this timeless beauty. Subsequently, the natural process of decay has slowly but surely become increasingly tangible, and today I will take you on an exclusive guided tour through this lost gemstone of German glory.

You had me holding my breath when you were using that ladder! I am older and was in the US Air Force in the 80s. I was stationed at Bitburg Germany in the early 80s. We spent our summer's exploring around the country. We found "bunker's" and would spend day's in them exploring. I am still in awe at the sights and things we found. What we brought in we took out, what was there was left exactly as we found it. Only "trusted" individuals were given our information so to leave the "history" intact and untouched. We didn't have the resources you have today so our exploration is just in our memories. 40 years later I am still in touch with these individuals and we use to have yearly reunion's where we would always tell our "stories". Oh how I wish I would have spent some money on a decent camera to be able to show my children and their children my memories. I have seen some "exploration" video's of those same bunker's that are trashed and ruined by unscrupulous people. It would be great to be able to share what we found before it was tainted. I have spent hour upon hours watching your channel and have to thank you for letting me live vicariously through your content. My body is too old to explore any longer but my mind still craves it. In this castle I am sure there were hidden doors in some of those panels to get into the "tower". As all the "castle's" etc we found there was always "exit route's" hidden within. Although, back then we didn't have to worry about "security alarm's/camera's" only security animals or actual security personnel. You have gotten me addicted to your channel. I am fighting breast cancer and find myself a homebody. I will continue to follow you as long as I live.

Hi, so to just give some more information.
The castle is called „Schloss Rothestein“ and is located in Bad Sooden-Allendorf, Hesse, Germany, a really nice little town. Back in the day the castle was used as a hunting and holiday castle and as said in the description often changed its owner until today.
During this summer a couple from a city nearby bought the castle and now they are renovating and restoring it. They plan to reopen the castle next summer to the public. They also want to reopen the cafe which is located inside the castle and are currently looking for someone to operate it.
Btw. great video. In reality the castle is even more beautiful than in the video.

Native German speaker here watching this interesting video about this amazing location in my home country. 22:28: The slogan means translated: "Acquire and Disclose (on the left); Gradually it Has Grown (on the right)". Looking at the symbol, the right slogan likely refers to it. Like a tree, wealth has grown for the family over the course of decades like a tree which grows constantly - at least that is what the phrase wants to wish for. The left slogan "Acquire and Disclose" might be related to the symbol next to it with three bells. It could be meant as a financial directive with bells symbolizing stock exchange - especially since former owners came from rich industrial settings. 30:53: "A Dom" is Latin and stands for anno domini = In The Year of The Lord. 34:13: "Des Hauses Ziel ist Reinlichkeit" means "Aim of the house is cleanliness". The old German "s" in words looks like a "f". 35:49: The "Ein Pfennig" or one Cent coins are likely from tourists in the past when the castle was accessible. Leaving one Cent behind is supposed to bring luck in German tradition. Often people throw it into fountains - likely the ones in this tray were collected out of the castle fountain seen earlier in the video. 37:57: The bench is half the part of a longer one which normally sits directly next to a window. In medieval times people had to use as much daylight as possible for reading or other activities, so they often sat close to windows - this castle was built as look-alike. The bench was moved since likely water came in through the window which also indicates the curled up carpet behind. 41:25: The painting is likely when the original castle was built judging from the deterioration - it is likely a religious catholic motive representing one holy knight on the horse. You can tell by the halo around his head.

@@blindspotspotter.2352 I think the second part of your comment really nails it. I don’t get a heavy flaunting vibe here. For me it’s all about the “working hard and this castle is my just reward” vibe, of a substantial age or era of squired wealth. The distinct lack of shiny glittery surfaces are instead so organic, carved intricately to perfection. It is to my eyes a vision. [Edit: I admit that my view is somewhat tainted by the sheer beauty and perfection that this magnificent castle contains. Modern art is a joke for the most part, a toddler could paint some of the simple things I see for sale as art. The stained glass now vs then? It’s mind boggling and kind of sad we settle for ugly grey square buildings and little NAS, lol. The American pennies are still in circulation here, worth 1 cent each. Although, older ones that are made of real copper and certain rare years fetch a higher collectors price.

BY THE WAY - the German phrase on the fireplace in the main entrance - erwerben und mitteilen mit der zeit touchs er - COULD BE translated as "Acquire and Communicate with (literally) the time he touches" which COULD MEAN if you don't translate literally - Acquire and share with the time you have (the time he touches - can be assumed to mean with the time you have or while there is time). I think some of the phrase is obliterated and not MUCHS as it is TOUCHS. At least that's my best guess. So inverting things a bit, "acquire and share what you have while you have the time (or with the life you have)"!! German is a difficult language to translate as it's often more "conceptual" than literal word for word. It's all about "the meaning" more than the words used to define it. Also in the small side room on the recessed seat - the "Ao DOM" is the same thing Anno Domini OR In the year of our Lord - or A.D. or as many think (wrongly) After Death - meaning after the death of the Lord. Just used to signify "in the year of" 1896.

Such a sad, sad thing to see. If I only had the youth, the money, the time and the location - THAT would be mine to restore and preserve. Such a sad story indeed. But a great video and explanation of its history and its demise to this point. Surely somebody will pick up on this and fix it- hopefully. But if not, it will return to nature as so many of the places you all explore seem to do. And THAT would be both a tragedy and a travesty.

This was so amazing. It seems the last couple of owners who used it as a venue/ rental hall, did close up those top floor rooms. These would have been amazing to see and I would imagine more decay would be found in them and in the castle. Perhaps budget constraints only allowed upkeep of the actual rooms that were used for the venue purposes- too bad we could get a glimpse of the basement floors either. But what a lovely explore! Thanks so much!

And I have good news: did some research and found that it is indeed ready for visitors, weddings etc from mid 2022 again! It is currently being renovated but at the moment they are offering photo tours for the super curious already (until end of the year). So it looks like this place has a bright future again!! Woow Maureno this is really an absolutely breathtaking location, full of the typical grandeur of the late 19th century imitation
style in the neo gothic way. - I already loved the stunning entrance hall with the magnificient huge chandelier - after my opinion -
an absolute masterpiece of metal work craftmanship!! - I really wonder, how the life of this rich man must have been back in the days,
when he was the builder and owner of that location. Imagine the original furniture, ..the servants, the parties, etc. etc. they were
most certainly celebrating from 1896 on. - This castle has really an incredible atmosphere as well. - Also in the other rooms and halls,
you were showing, there were so incredibly wonderful chandeliers and very decorative woodcarvings and beautifully designed ceilings,
as well as beautiful stained glass windows visible. - And - I am all the time nearly speechless, when listening to your beautifully
expressed introductions in very good English. - Also the exterior like the interior is in the same way breathtaking, reminding
me of a fairytale castle. It's somehow quite comparable, regarding the general architectural concept, to the famous
castle "Neu Schwanenstein" in Bavaria built by the king Ludwig II. - What an incredible explore, dear bro! - I got actually sweaty
hands, and my heart was beating faster when watching you all climbing up and down this ladder..... I am so glad, that nothing
serious has happened to you. - However all these risks, the difficult access to the castle, the scares of being spotted by security or
even being caught by police, really were consequently highly rewarded by unique and breathtaking sights.
Bravo Maureno, once more an absolutely incredible and wonderful explore video in the unparallelled high and very classy
Explomo quality - only in the same way comparable of course with Lesleys Urbex videos!!! - Wishing you all the best, much love,
peace and kindest regards. - Thank you so very much for sharing this memorable explore with us viewers!
N.B. I couldn't watch your vid already on Sunday, when you were uploading, because Lesley and his buddies
were on their way to my home for a memorable and very pleasant visit, where I was completely absorbed in taking care of them!

@@yanifitriyani9287 literally hundreds of laborers, most likely dozens of specialized artisans, and one primary architect. Probably took between 2 and 10 years to build the original structure, but based on the look of the place it seems like it has most likely been renovated, and added on to multiple times throughout its life, and that makes a final number on how long it took overall very difficult to calculate.

It's about the tunnels to cities underneath castles, museums, white house, courthouses, post offices, giant engineering firms, and what they do is human trafficking. It's not all they do, they are busy running surface earth but it's critical because of their diet to live a very long time and have tremdous energy as predators. So these castles and everything else is for show for the real games.

And just think of the sheer amount of time, horsepower and effort it took to move the tons of supplies up the mountain to even build it!
This was a grandiose hunting lodge with its gorgeous organic Art Nouveau artistic aesthetic seen throughout in all decorative, carved and painted elements.
Those amazing carved glass light globes, like pine cone are beautiful.
The heraldic motif glass windows in that huge dining room and the windows over the Grand staircase depicting game, foul & furry creatures were refined and beautifully executed.
Seeing the evidence of the electronic safety requirements of: various signs for Exits, the fire extinguisher, modern hinges on top of DR doors and other indications of the Castles conversion from Private Residential to Public Commercial space subtracted a little bit from the splendor. Yet, even still it was spectacularly finished with not a hint of anything being improperly done. First class at every juncture.
You are too funny, in the beginning saying 'we're gonna be quick'; then going in and giving such a great detailed explore of everything slow and close-up and tripod set-ups for entry narration. Haha!!
How long were you in there, two? three hours? ; )
I must say; that ladder climb up and down was scary.
