- Here in Texas an abused horse ( used for some sort of racing ) has now been rescued. He’s at @spirit run equine rescue centre in Tyler Texas and is petrified of people and anything asked of him . I’ve never said it before but the flag you sent me all the way to New Zealand has been a god send. My old mare, 35, years old has always been pushy and she totally respects me with confidence and the flag. Wonderful to stick in my back pocket. At mad feeding times in the field it totally helps keep me safe and the four horses have learnt absolute manners. It’s very calm now. Thank you!

When Angela went to catch Georgie at the beginning, I learned so much from her reading of the situation. She was brilliant!
Oh, how I loved when he put his head down. He looked almost surprised. His fear for a few seconds gone. And how he turned his head toward you almost questioning if this was real. No fear, for those seconds.
Your kindness to this horse is so wonderful - you are so generous sharing this with others.
Steve's comment about the horsemanship string brought back a memory! When I had horses as a kid, we used to use the binder twine from the hay bales to catch our horses all the time! And yes, we would jump on and use the twine as a neck rope while riding them back to the hitching post!
That's how you know it's a passion, you can't help but go where you're needed. That's a gorgeous horse though
We have a horse very similar to this at our rescue but could not even be caught, I had to do 1 eye 2 eye to catch him the first few times. He was scared of humans but not other things and weak on the right eye. I found he settled down after about 8 short sessions and then could relax, release hind quarters, etc easily once he trusted me. A trick I used to get him to love the halter and walks was to plant a bowl of hay and carrots somewhere on the walk route and then let him eat when we 'found' it. That also adds 10 minutes of relaxation time to together as I waited for him to chow down. After 2 trips finding hay, he grew to love the halter and the walk, he likes food a lot and he's now eager to get the halter on and go find the food bowl. We do the walk before dinner so he is feeling hungry and we work on him staying behind me, back up, turns, etc.
He was actually super obedient to all commands similar to this horse at first but got a bit lazy later once he was less nervous and acting like a normal horse. Then I had to be tiny bit firmer with him for a bit but he was fine with it since he trusts me now. I also did work at head lowering especially early on and he seemed to really need it then the most. The first time he followed me like a puppy was after a head lowering session. Now he loves to come near me and just stand with his head at half mast in sleepy zombie mode on his own. Other peeps at the rescue are also trying to befriend him too but he's much much much slower with them. I think he trusts me because I had power over him and did not abuse it and because I stay relaxed and make him feel safe. The other volunteers are acting super cautious around him because they are afraid to scare him but ironically that makes him trust them less. I learned all this on this channel so Cutter the rescue horse thanx you.

The lady running the place, I believe you called her Angela is magnificent with the horses. I would love to visit this center. As always Steve and Tanya a job well done. Just in that short amount of time Georgi calmed down quite a bit. I’m really starting to notice how horses are in both eyes… anyway Happy Birthday Tanja!
A horse drops his head its so many things in one gesture, respect,the beginning of trust, thanks, i feel safe etc. That horse has spent a lifetime being on guard, head up alert for danger but unable to run away when danger comes calling up close. Your eyes have learnt to see everything Steve but your heart has never missed a thing!!

Happy Birthday Tania🥳 love this interaction with George! Even as nervous as he was, Steve as always, was able to get quick results with acute timing and release. It was great to see George let go of some tension and soften in his look and body when Steve worked on lowering his head. Angela has a great sense and feel. She will move forward in leaps and bounds now with these nuggets of 'GOLD' from Steves practical, well explained teachings! 🤠

I am pulling for a Steve Young Horsemanship movement in Americar! I grew up in SE Montana raised in a family of horsemen and cowboys so I was drawn to Steve's work. From what I gather he is a prote`ge` of the American masters, however Steve doesn't whisper, he shows very clearly how he talks to the feet. He's a next level horse and human trainer. There are a lot of horses in Americar being handled by people who don't know how. I have a day off so I'm feeling froggy but why not a series of SYH clinics across Americar? Any thoughts? Thanks Steve and Tanya for showing your work. This is a real treasure.
There are plenty of talented horsemen/ women who follow sound principles here in the USA.

Oh my life … wasn’t I was surprised to get a VLOG from you, given the agreement there was to be NO filming on Tanya’s birthday vacation. Then I realized it was prior footage from the Texas trip.
Well one could see that George was starting to warm up to you in that little bit of time. He wasn’t snorting anywhere near as much as he had been by the end of the VLOG. An excellent example of when a horse who only wants you in the one 👁️. It will be interesting to see how George is coming along, when you go back to visit the rescue.

This breaks my heart in 2 ways. 1) No animal should ever be abused. 2) this makes sooooo homesick. I grew up and lived in NE TX until i was 32. I miss it so much. Oak trees, 4 seasons, hospitality, and friendliness of strangers. I am a fish out of water in the city, but my horses keep me sane.
I think you won him over, Steve. So sweet when he put his head towards you when you knelt down by him. He knows. Horses are so forgiving and in the moment of now. Please keep us updated on gorgeous George

I've watched quite a few of your videos Steve, but I really enjoyed this one, it really hit home for me. Mainly because I took some Saddles out to "fit" on someone else's horse a few days ago, he was similar to this horse, on alert, abit snorty, high head carriage etc. George is a really smart horse, and he actually surprised me, in a short space of time he was really understanding what's being asked. When horses hold their heads high, they release cortisol in readiness for flight or fight. When they drop their heads, they release endorphins, and they are happy and relaxed. The horse I was trying Saddles on had his head high, so it shortened his back, and made the Saddles sit abit high in front. Learn something new all the time. 😊💙🐴💜🌹

I learned so much from this video. Like what it looks like when a horse truly disengages his/her hindquarters, and why they won't do it when they're stressed, rigid, or mistrustful. Why it's so important to work both sides of the horse and how they can become dependent on one side and anxious on the other. Also, your words about why a horse that has to bolt, simply has to and there's no getting in the way of that. SO much insight today, Steve and Tanya. This video was pure gold. That horse is absolutely beautiful and I know he'll thrive where he is in the kind hands of Angela and Stephanie. Best video yet, truly.
Hi Steve there is a youtuber called Imasurvivor sanctuary they have a rescued young horse called Rita. She is sassy and wants to run the show by bossing everything around. just about 8 days ago one of the owners went in to remove her rug and was kicked so hard it broke the ladies jaw and she is having reconstructive surgery today because of it. I think they need a horse specialist to go in and help them
They've had advice from that other horse guy which hasn't worked. If they can get in touch with Steve they would learn so much!

Rita is a very young filly, full of energy and happiness. Several people there are handling her without any problems. Lester and Jamie have never said which horse it was who kicked Jamie, cuz they are not blaming the horse.
ISS specifically said, by name, they were not interested in contacting Steve. Many people had suggested they at least watch Steve's videos and ISS said they are not interested.
What a difference look George had at the end, even in just a short time with you!

This was an amazing primer on calming a scared horse ! Sure, it's only a start, but it demonstrates what is possible. As you say, practice can absolutely change a horse.

When I was a kid I used to get given to ride, horses who were terrified and aggressive with men and a relaxed darling with girls and women. One woman's boyfriend (who later was charged with domestic violences offences) was disgusted that I could walk up to the abused ex-racehorse and get on him bareback. He saddled the horse and tried to ride him and was immediately thrown into a fence and broke his leg. You are wonderful in getting horses past their justified fear of men.

What a beautiful horse. Even with that short session he learned so much. I loved hearing Tanya's sympathetic tuts, and "so sad", when Georgie grunted from fear and nerves. The horse flies on the beach near the permaculture place were huge and a challenge until I figured out to set my blue umbrella on the beach a little distance away from us… then they all went to the umbrella, not us!
