    Loosing your parents is hard but it does not matter the age, i lost both of my parents just after i turned 40. My mum to cancer, and my dad to mixes dementia. I get through the days by doing my best in everything i do, just as they taught me. I hope I make them proud of who i have become. Always love the work you do and that guitar is really nice. All the best.

      Love the work you do - that's so important - whatever it is. If you can't find a way to love what you're doing (or even how you're doing it) then change and find something to do that you can love in some way, for some reason.

      Denying logic is logical. Regardless of musical instruments. Friends dying, and it happens a lot now, is inevitable. You can't choose anything. The prodigal.

      Hey Dion, we're good relatively speaking! I mean keeping things in perspective. We've got food in the cupboard, spare change on a shelf and pretty good health. No-one's fighting in the streets outside our home... and we're free to do pretty much most anything we want to do plus we've got each other. That's a pretty massive head-start on a huge chunk of the world's population right there. Always grateful for what we have. On top of that, of course, I also get to choose when I work and I get to work on guitars every day too!

    Hi Sam, you said a shim is not a problem, as long as it's a hard material. What are some examples of materials we could use to shim a guitar saddle? I've had a luthier use a strip from a credit card, but not sure if that works well. Thanks!

    • @SamDeeksRelovedGuitars

      Hi, I always use 0.25mm thick brass sheet because it’s easy to cut and 0.25 is almost always the lift I need. Only very rarely have I had to use two pieces ie 0.5mm lift. When I’ve cut the strip I put some double-sided sticky tape on it to keep it in place where I want it in the back of the pocket or neck heel. I personally avoid soft materials like paper and some plastic.

    Hi Sam, love all you do, learn a lot with it. Tell me what brand is the nut and bridge you buy for all guitars you do? Where did you buy it? They seem to be done for every model specific.

    • @SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
      @SamDeeksRelovedGuitars Před 4 měsíci +1

      It's a tricky business... I prioritise the e-to-e spacing of the nut (i.e. the spacing of the original that the player is used to) and using that I go looking in the Tusq nut catalogue for whichever nuts have that e-to-e spacing. I then look for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th variables in that priority order i.e. side-to-side width, front-to- back width and finally height. I home in on whatever nut gives me the closest in that priority order starting with the e-to-e. Of course the other variables can be slightly over because I can sand the nut back if necessary.
      With the e-to-e as the priority variable, you'll be amazed how hard it is to get an exact match for even a guitar like this Martin (as you can see on the video). The same applies to a degree with the saddle - except there was a pretty good match on saddles, albeit I had to order it direct from Canada.
      So all of the above means it's almost impossible to find a drop-in replacement Tusq nut for about 95% of guitars out there. So much so that when you DO find one that's practically 'drop-in' you're noticeably surprised :)
      After 3-4 years of having this GraphTech catalogue I've only just started trying to document the commonly-used options for each kind of guitar I typically set up, to try to save myself some (A LOT) of time.
      Even when (if) you've found a nut that you think you can work with the next major headache is "where the hell can I get one??" because a) often there are none to be had in the UK (or your country) and/or b) there be one to buy in your country but you'll never know because a large number of sellers forget to put the full part number on their listing so you miss them when searching. And even if you find the nut with the dimensions you want, you'd be surprised how few people (even GraphTech themselves and JHS their UK distributor!) put the damned radius down on the listing. So you have to interrogate Google sideways to try to find some blogging guitar tech who happens to have mentioned that PQ-6043-00 acoustic / electric style nut has a radius of 15".... And if nobody mentions it then you're destined to have to cut the saddles down by hand to ensure that the slots match the actual neck radius.
      So you can see it's a major pain in the a** - and it takes me hours of searching and sometimes hours of modifying (as you saw here).

    Why is it that when it was used on old cheap guitars it was called "plywood" (and was thought to be BAD) but when it's now used on Martins and Gibson ES series guitars it's suddenly re-christened "laminate" (and is suddenly thought to be Quality)?
    Mind you "laminate" makes it sound like a Formica worktop, so not much of an improvement to my mind - lol
    The building industry call it "Engineered Timber" - much less Formica-ery.
