    Watching you plow snow, replace ties, haul pellets and rerailing trains on the Mill Brook is always fun for me. It's a cool railroad and I appreciate your puns and humor, especially after you've had numerous derailments. Your videos building and repairing equipment are also great fun. So much work involved in running a small railroad. I'm retired now, have plenty of space and can afford to have a backyard railroad but, unfortunately, lack the physical ability to build one!

    When I see your chain I know on motor cycles and gocarts chain that I have mounted a spring loaded tensioner pully or polly shoe to keep chain tieth like on dirt bikes with long travel suspenion works great , just a idea !

    • @robertheinkel6225
      @robertheinkel6225 Před rokem

      The difference, is on bikes and carts, the chain only travels one direction, and the idler can be installed on the slack side. On the locomotive, the chains travel both directions, and an idler would be trying to maintain tension under load.

    I’ve been binge watching for a while. My wife is very understanding and brings meals to my cell.
    I appreciate the deceptively simple story lines and your “every man “ persona and self deprecating narration. I have an apple box in the office so I can ride along on the railroad tours.
    Double coil springs on the ES 2-500. Does that stiffen the ride while absorbing the bumps? What weight rider do you think this will survive?
    Keep the video coming. I’ve almost learned how to watch them in order. 😊

    • @MillBrookRailroad
      @MillBrookRailroad  Před 3 měsíci

      The double coil springs have handled a 350-lb rider with no trouble. the light springs are for the engine running without a rider.

      @rhythmsoftherailroad6484 , if you're going to be anywhere, you may as well consider yourself in the middle of it. Whether it's north, south, east, west, or nowhere. But even nowhere becomes somewhere just by the very nature of its being there.

    OK, I did a little searching online regarding different kinds of 'pillow blocks' available and found vertical mount types, both 2-bolt and 4-bolt mounting varieties, not too expensive either!
    I still need the information regarding your sprocket tooth counts and different sizes of wheel sizes availability.
    Thank you.

      11 tooth on the motor to 35 tooth on the jackshaft to (2) 11 tooth sprockets on the kackshaft driving a 35 tooth sprocket on each axle.

    I’ve watched the videos chaining and adjusting chain as you assemble the engines. You use multiple sprockets- are you making a gear ratio change or just maintaining a one-to-one as you distribute the motion across the chassis?
    Some engines use a motor on each truck and a more direct drive system. Just wondering how you made your decision and the pros or cons of each.
    Thx for the Denver live feed.

    • @MillBrookRailroad
      @MillBrookRailroad  Před 3 měsíci

      I do a double reduction of 11 tooth to 35 tooth. That gives me a top speed of about 8 or 9 miles an hour and enough torque to rip small stumps out of the ground.

  • @robertkerber831
    @robertkerber831 Před 3 měsíci

    What tooth count drive and driven spockets are you currently using? Are 'pillow blocks' (the jackshaft and axle bearing holders) available in vertical mount configuration as well as the horizontal mounting style you are using?
    Are different diameter (cast or machined) wheels commercially available other than the size/diameter (1 1/2" scale versus 2 1/2" scale) you are using, and if so what manufacturer makes/offers them?

    • @MillBrookRailroad
      @MillBrookRailroad  Před 3 měsíci

      I use 5-1/4" diameter IBLS profile steel wheels. You can use either 2-1/2" scale or 1-1/2" scale wheels. The wheels are the hardest parts to source. I'm constantly looking for new suppliers and they're always running out of stock.

    IT DRIVES ME NUTS THAT YOU REFUSE TO USE A RATCHET WRENCH WHEN IT IS APPROPRIATE.
    A simple spring loaded tensioning roller would self adjust. And a flat on the axle for the set screw to land on or a woodruff key would solve that too.

    greetings Aaron, are master links directional? having to be assembled in a specific orientation ?
    it has been so long that I have had to work with chains. neat Shay steam engine! there is so much
    machining involved with custom parts, and all the assembly involved! it will be such a special
    engine once done! very nice video, it was nice having the dog interlude! belly rubs wanted.take care, be safe.

    • @robertheinkel6225
      @robertheinkel6225 Před rokem

      Sort of, for example on a motorcycle, the master link is installed so the open end of the link is pointing away from the direction of chain travel. This limits the chance of it catching something and being popped off. On a train engine that travels in both direction,it doesn’t matter.

    • @MillBrookRailroad
      @MillBrookRailroad  Před rokem

      I try to install master links so they are the easiest to maintain. That means having it disassemble in a way that you can get your fingers in to change a chain when it's time.
