Captaining an interstellar spacecraft probably requires a higher education. Oilmar also mentions in the Pikmin 1 manual that he is well-known as a navigator, and is job is of “no small importance”. It seems like space captains are highly respected on Hocotate, even if they’re just moving cargo.

To be fair, since pikmin are a mixture of plant and animal (mostly plant-like), the line "Natural sex changes" does make sense in the context that some plants can actually change their sex. This actually can have different factors, some of these are for breeding, sublight intake, and even a yearly basis (a plant that is male one year can be female the next year).
(My gender-centered biology brain just wanted to info-dump on behalf of that bit of dialogue).

Exactly! It's basically speaking from a biology standpoint, not many creature possess this ability tho and it's typically for the survival of a species. Such as if there are too many males and not enough females it helps a lot, it's crazy the ways nature works and I'll never stop being amazed by it.

@@lizando1326 I think there's also that crab parasite that can change the crabs from male to female and trick them into caring for them plus being antisocial from other crabs that might save them from being manipulated by it. Sometimes fact in the real world is crazier than fiction

I was trying to experiment to see if it was possible to get every type of Pikmin out at once. I entered with blues and the rock/wings. (since theres no buds for those in this cave) sadly the experiment fell flat :(

to be fair, lock on and charge is extremely annoying while fighting BLL. the pointer goes over the central orb, but pikmin will run to the legs when charged
I think what olimar meant with the empress bulblax is for when she gets pregnant she grows bigger, as for when she's defeated, she shrinks, meaning no more bulborb larvae are being produced.
Likely this is what happens to termite queens, as they have a huge abdomen like the empress
As someone who studies zoology, you can't really "get soft" when speaking in detail about something as crucial like that of the natural sexual process an species goes through, specially in something so remarkable as the bulborb's polyploidy infertility and believe it or not, down syndrome due to the extra chromosome; or the sex changes they go through in order to become empress bulblaxes, so Olimar gets a pass.

P.D: Creature breeding program it's nothing wrong. Yonny just wanted to make wildlife reproduce so they don't cause mayor environmental impact once they leave; just like having parakeets in a cage to get babies, he wanted to do that but with bulborbs.

@@MonikaCinnyRoll Yeah, given some other stuff Yonny says (like the thing Dingo brings up), I don't think it was *just* about replacing what they wipe out. He *definitely* has a bit of a "Mad Scientist" side to him, and some relatively loose ideas of ethics. When Yonny says "experimental" there is probably some cause for concern.

Also take in note Bulborbs tower over your player like a T-rex to a person. And bulborbs can even turn much bigger than that
Given how daytime enemies never respawn, and how chilling it can be walking around an area devoid of fauna, I feel a breeding program is very necessary.
@@charlesvattimo4674 sad thing is that although some of them die and it's no big deal like the bulborbs, as they are members of the most widespread family on the planet, some species are confirmed by Olimar's notes to be in decline or straight up endangered, like the waddlequaff or the lesser spotted jellyfloat

Huh…that’s odd…when I used the recommended Pikmin selection thing, and made it to the 2nd to last sublevel of this cave, they gave me only 3 candypop buds, and they’re in the colors of the main three Pikmin types, red, yellow, and blue. I guess the game adjusts this accordingly to the Pikmin selection you’ve made prior to entering the final cave before the final boss, and because of this, I don’t have a single rock, or winged Pikmin with me during the fight, nor prior to it, but only the main Pikmin types of Pikmin 2, plus ice Pikmin.
If anything, I don’t really think this is a jerk move on Nintendo’s part, but rather the game trying to balance itself to have you try to use every Pikmin type prior to the final boss. (With some sacrifices to be made.)
