altamont motor speedway, san francisco , california ... december 1969
rolling stones put on free concert, and hired hell's angels for security, offering... "all the beer they could drink".
it got ugly. 4 deaths, and and many injuries, among the 300,000 in attendance. THIS IS THE DAY in december of 1969...that the "summer of love" officialy died. - Zábava
I was there and it was a bad vibe from the moment it started until it ended. I was never so glad to leave a concert in my life.
@ Getting clubbed in the head with a pool cue is your idea of fun?
It still looks like better times than all this fake virus stuff people are bullied with today...
@@syndicatedsatellite7288 Honestly, yeah, I'd rather be there.
Give me dangerous freedom over safe control any day.
Were you actually there dude ? Id like to do an interview with you about it .
@@syndicatedsatellite7288 you're a vile excuse for a human being
one of my all-time favorite 60s and 70s bands the Jefferson Airplane great name
The beginning with bass and drum jamming is the best part
GREAT MUSIC BAD VIBES
"Let's hire the Hell's Angels to provide security and let's pay them in as much beer as they can drink. What could possibly go wrong..."
Absolutely. Those Hells Angels are just great guys.
More than beer, my friend. Some were on strange trips. A LOT of paranoia and fear going down.
It's crazy how grown men wear gay leather costumes and expect to be taken seriously.
@@smichaels10 They were beating people unconscious with pool cue sticks. Violence is always seriously wrong.
I love hearing Grace trying to defuse the situation. She sounds like a school teacher scolding kids in a classroom.
Right, and the kids aren't listening
Yeah, I still recall my 2nd grade teacher saying:
"Let's not keep f*cking up!"
I grew up in Oakland - rapidly learned to avoid bad scenes. Played it safe and went to Vietnam.
You might recognize this song as performed by Jefferson Airplane, in a little rockumentary called "Gimme Shelter," about the Rolling Stones and their nightmare at Altamont. That night the Oakland chapter of the Hell's Angels had their way.
and now ITS MY TURN
@@kimmyfreak200 LMAO!!!!
📸 that’s gonna be a good 1…
Literally, why I'm here😂
Jefferson Airplane is a fantastic group 🎉🎉. They make real rock and roll 🎉🎉. They don't make music like this anymore 🎉🎉. Having the Hells Angels there ruined the experience for everyone 🎉🎉
RIP Paul Kanters finest moment was at Altamont concert in 69, when Kantner stood up to the Hells Angels, who punched out Marty Balin. I admire Kantners courage.
I agree with you 1,000%!! That was just uncalled for by those idiots. One thing that really irks the shit out of me about some people is how when they do something wrong, they want to get in your face and make it look like YOU fucked up!!! Totally unacceptable.
+L J Sopjes -Yes, it was.
"..... I want these cats out of the way". Not so bad either ----
Beautiful Sweet William
frank kilcoyne amen to that! there would be no better barometer of courage than saying one word against that group of scary motherfuckers in defense of a bandmember.
For me the 60's ended that day on December 31st, 1969. I miss those days.
Jeff Bolte that sounds like a soundbite from a hypothetical news item about the death of the 60's dream . Every decade ends on the 31st of December .
Well obviously that's when the 60's ended, the next day was 1970! Hahaha
I see what you did there...
"That day" wasn't December 31st. It was in early December.
Also ended during the Isle of Wight festival that year- they showed how music became a money grab from that point and all the beautiful ethos died. Did Jagger see the festival as same because they were having business problems and hoped this would help that for Stones. I.E. you’re either love and peace or you’re not..
I WAS THERE TOO, HAD A REAL HARD TIME FINDING A PLACE TO PARK MY 65 FALCON STATION WAGON, SO I PARKED IT ON A GRASSY HILL.. IT WAS WORTH THE LONG WALK. THIS WAS A REALLY COOL THING TO TELL MY FRIENDS SINCE I WAS ONLY 16 AT THE TIME...
I got there the night before just after sundown...we camped near fires and sang songs...at dawn the day of the concert we got in first..and I picked my spot....100 ft from the stage, between the light scaffolding...and I recorded a lot of the concert...you can here me yelling on the ALTAMONT LIVE concert footage....I left 10pm after the Stones left the stage...(I lived in San Mateo at the time, and the SAN MATEO TIMES and GOLDMINE magazine printed my story.
The joyous success of Woodstock??? Why are you whitewashing history? Concertgoers burned a hot dog stand down because the prices were too high. The fence was torn down by freeloaders who didn't want to pay to see what others already had.
@@PapagenoMF this was not Woodstock, dillweed
Sure you did...what an artful bull shitter.
@@PapagenoMF That was Woodstock 99.
As someone who is in a band for 20 years, if someone touches one of your band members and you don’t respond, your ass is fired! The angels would probably kick all of our asses, but it would have been on 100%.
Have to hand it to Marty Balin for having the balls to get in the Hells Angles faces even if he did get his ass kicked.
Poor Marty: No good deed goes unpunished
I was at both Woodstock 99 and broke my collarbone in the Oasis crowd crush in Manchester while visiting my best friend when he was doing study abroad......and somehow this is the most batshit crazy concert I've ever heard of
What a hellhole....So much for "Peace, love and music"
RIP Paul and Marty!
Odd to suddenly see Michael Lang, one of the organizers of the Woodstock Music and Art Festival, pop up on screen at 2:45. Altamont occurred less than four months after Woodstock. Sadly, Michael passed away recently.
Not so odd as he was involved not as a promoter but helped in securing the location for the concert.
the member of the hell's angels that knocked out Marty Balin was a guy named "Animal". He is the guy with the fox pelt on his head and you can see him in some videos at altamont. He was a stuntman in Hollywood and was said to have enormously large hands... Must've made quick work of old Marty.
Coyote, not fox.
What happened with Rex and that animal dude?
Wearing a fox pelt. Sounds like a quality human being. SMH
Who pushed Marty off the stage ?
"easy....easy....." I love the shot of Grace's hand. I hate that this happened.
Altamont....The Anti-Woodstock
The hippie "peace and love" charade exposed for all the world to see. Yep, the Angels contributed to this disaster but the mood in the crowd was ugly, too. The hippie "love" was a false love. It was all about self and "doing one's own thing". Naturally, doing one's own thing with no consideration for others, can and does lead to trouble on occasion and this was a good example.
Also, amusing to hear that tired '60s hip-speak again..."you cats", "we're splitting".
the mood in the crowd was ugly? Hard to tell on a Computer screen....If you can call a mood ugly you probably had to be there.
its funny... Ive been to numerous concerts and public events from Led Zepp at MSG to last year's ELO concert in NJ....and yes ... a few concerts and football games in Cali ....since the 80's....one thing about Cali crowds I pick up at times....there's an undercurrent of anger and violence beneath that sunny facade....ex... three years ago, my girl and I were vacationing in SD...We went to Del Mar Race track one day...afterrwards. the Cult were playing near the Grandstand....everything was chill (actually sorta a robotic crowd considering the awesome sounds of the Cult) until near the end... some dude threw a plastic water bottle at my head from behind...I had to play it off because one..I didnt see who did it...two I was near the stage standing up and it was packed...three I was with my girl and didnt want to go USMC (former SGT here) on some dude.... I just laughed it off....sure enough.. 20 min later concert over....all around me... dudes were breaking off , squaring up and throwing fists etc........ we just left that venue very quickly.... not the first time Ive seen random anger at a Cali venue been going to Cali for thirty years biz and vacation....I love it there..but its shocking how a culture of "chill and relax" can go south in a hurry.....
You’re kidding you’re self if you believe that it’s an exclusive “Cali” thing. Lol Boston? NYC? Really it’s a major US city phenomenon.
I think I see Michelle Phillips at 4:47 Big mistake hiring the Hell's Jerkoffs
Holy shit! I had read about how crazy this concert was and they literally undersold it. This was a fucking disaster!
A triumph of chaos. The organisers were incompetent, the bands naive, the gig should never have been played there. The stage was 39inches high, at the bottom of a hill, with 300,000 people there..............................
Perfect michael Miller special ♥️ 💙 and special ♥️ for all
RIP Paul Kantner....
Micheal Lang at 2.44
haha his woodstock was way better and he knew it
I think he helped organize Altamont too
@@jiveassturkey8849 he did.
Marty Balin gets off stage and gets in between some drunken Hell's Angels wielding pool cues ? Probably not the smartest thing to do.
Baaaaaaad chemistry for that party.
Super nice editing on this piece.
Gracias por.compartir ...esta maravilla ...que época.,tan bella y que banda .❤desde Argentina
ive never seen any of this footage,i heard about altamont, now i see the hells angels essentially took over the show and ruined it for everyone
From the looks of it, it seems that the drugs took over the crowd and the show and ruined it for everyone who was somewhat clean and sober.
From wikipedia: "Meredith Curly Hunter, Jr. (October 24, 1951 - December 6, 1969) was an 18-year-old African American who was killed at the 1969 Altamont Free Concert. During the performance by The Rolling Stones, Hunter approached the stage, and was violently driven off by members of the Hells Angels motorcycle club who had agreed to serve as security guards. He subsequently returned to the stage area, drew a revolver, and was stabbed and beaten to death by Hells Angel Alan Passaro." The Hells Angels prevented a possible murder.
@@ColonelSpankysLostBattalion That was later on.
@@marine4lyfe85 Yep. The Rolling Stones were the last act.
It's so great how none of these kids were on drugs- just dancing and good clean fun.
Lol
I'm sure Governor Reagan was proud.
Boi you clearly don't know anything about hippies during the sixties
Yeah all the clean jolly good fun😂
In the 60's, thanks to groups like Big Brother and the Holding Company, suddenly the Angels were thought of as cool by the 'hip' public. This was like leading lambs to the slaughter. Not the Angels fault; you don't bring in the Marines to work security for Grandma's bingo game. The Angels were (and are) what they are. They did what they were hired to do in the way that they do it. Both sides are guilty here: The Angels for being too heavy handed, and the promoters for not doing their research .
Don't compare an outlaw motorcycle gang with the Marines!
Everyone knows about what the Hell's Angel's were doing. Never hire them for security and pay them in beer.
The Hells Angels were recommended to Stones road manager Sam Cutler by Jerry Garcia and the grateful dead who left the concert because of the violence. The Rolling Stones should have played or started before it got dark. Mick jackoff wanted his outfit to look better at night. Anyone watching this can see it's a cluster fuck.
What? hells angels here are scumbags end of story you tick
Big brother? More like Sam Cutler and the dead recommending them,
It was a no-win situation.
The logistics were all screwed up due to a last minute change in location. The stage was built for the original sight which would have perched it on a hill top. When the concert was moved to Altamont, the stage sat below the crowd. It was only four feet off the ground. There were no barriers to separate the crowd from the stage. And if you've ever been in a huge concert crowd, you can't stop yourself from being pushed by the crowd. The H.A. was trying to do an impossible job of protecting the stage. A No-Win situation due to poor planning!
Is Marty Balin in the white cowboy hat and jeans jacket?
Yes
Jorma and Jack....Hot Tuna!
Как же это офигенно было...
According to Marty Balin he was trying to help a fan who was being harrased and he was beaten up by the Hells Angles. The Greatful Dead refused to perform the Altamont concert.
Love how the Angels totally destroyed the Airplane's act!
Whatever else happened at Altamont, Jorma and Jack did their job.
My parents were altmont had a nice time, the problems were closer to stage. Hell Angels were used as cheap security, the stones needed security, my parents told me that there was a lot of bad drugs that cause the problem.
Hell's Angel security has been advided by Jerry Garcia cause they have already hired them without any matter but it was an harder group here.
Pause 5:01
That guy looks like Charles Manson!!
I can't believe Grace Slick did not calm this whole thing down by ripping off her top and flashing those righteous ta ta's.
One of her boobs is larger than the other, so they're not quite righteous.
Happy Birthday today(December 23) to Jorma Kaukonen. Cheers!
"Keep your bodies off each other unless you intend love."
Good line there, Gracie, but I'm sure if the hippies put their bodies on the Angels even intending love, they would've gotten beaten even harder. :D
Very interesting video. Really good footage, too.
oh they touched my bike...grow up!
one of the best, there is no one THE BEST....its a part, of a huge , great part... do you dig that ?
maravilhasss muito somm.... jam session
"This is the sight we had one day on the High Moutain
We saw a lamb with seven eyes
We saw a beast with seven horns
And a book sealed with seven seals
Seven angels with seven trumpets
And seven bowls filled with anger
Those are the pictures of what was, of what is and of what is to come
We're the people
The Rolling people
The why people
The waiting people
The wanting people
The tambourine people
The alternative people
The Angel people
THE ANGEL PEOPLE"
Altamont, by Aphrodite's Child's 666 album, 1972.
2:43: "Shit, my festival was better..."
What a great gig
When security at an outdoor rock festival brings sawed-off pool cues, you know shit's gonna happen.
2:55 ill have what he's having
He's just vibin
Jorma was definitely kicking some ass on guitar! It's a shame he didn't get to finish.
George Lucas was there doing a lot of the filming as a young upstart working w/the Maysles bros. The Angels were loaded on cheap wine, speed and bad LSD just looking for trouble. They went from being portrayed in the media as respectable outlaws to bullies and killers real quick after that.
they still are, aren´t they?
thats why they were brought on as security the managers were aware they had no training nor were they gonna take orders they just knew the HA name alone would intimidate people not to charge the stage
Respectable my ass! I have none for these mongrels😠
A real tough guy don't need a pack of losers backing him up.
great video
Really a shame, as it wasn't supposed to turn out as it did. I would have probably never went to a concert for a long time after something like this!
Well, the 60s ended shortly after this concert for everybody, since it was in December 1969 :)
My people I love you
the angels ruined Altamont..this is confirmed
Who would have guessed that a violent gang of ex-cons would use violence as their main tool?
Love the guy at 1:12 middle of frame,it's me!
Awesome
"Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in Hell
Could break that Satan's spell"
- an excerpt from Don Mclean's "American Pie" referring to this incident!
great band.
Grace Slicks comment "We need people like the Angels" Er no we don't!!!
yeah because of fuktards
Once they played “We built this city” I left because that song made people start fighting.
Michael Lang at 2:42
hire Hells Angels as security and pay them with free booze and speed - what could possibly go wrong..
That's me at 2:46. We left while the Stones were playing. At the beginning the Angel's were launching full cans of beer benevolently into the crowd of hippies. That's the kind of party it was. The end of the Summer of Love. But I got to see Donovan.
I wonder if it was the Summer of Love in Russia? Or cambodia with Pol Pott?
Most out of line gathering of (of hells angels) ive ever seen..Makes me wonder about at other events that were never on film
what did casady said to the hells angels? i 'm not english and i dont understand. Thx
When the wheels really come off in the near future, its nice to know that the scourge of the earth like the hells angels will be systematically neutralized in a way that that would make a Charles Bronson movie look like a Disney production.
Mark Lawrence If the wheels come off...People like the Hell's Angels will thrive.
CSN was smart enough to back out
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young did play at Altamont.
All that Woodstock Created and Exemplified was Destroyed in Altamont
This concert was a disaster and one which I choose to forget
The most amazing thing about this video? Jack broke a bass string! You know how hard that is?!?
I broke a bass string once.
When I tried out a bass amp at a Guitar Center in Avondale, AZ . . . the low E string broke right at the bridge just as I played it. Can you imagine that? You want to hear how much bottom an amp has and the lowest string breaks!
Woodstock ..1969,Owsiak z tym swoim pogo ,choćby gromy waliły z jasnego nieba i było oberwanie chmury nie powtórzy tych klimatów
This was a good jam. It is too bad the Hell's Angels had to break it up. The crowd was a bit unruly as well. When you give a free concert you open it up to not necessarily the best concert patrons. Jack Casady was one of the best bassists of the sixties.
Hey, let's have a concert and have the Black Panthers for security!?! What were these people thinking?
Oh yes let's get the Hell's Angel's for security, good fucking idea Rolling Stones not!, way to wreck the 60's.
They did the same in Hyde Park and had no problems ....
OH and yeah, Hey Mick Good Job on the Security Choice!
I HAD A GREAT TIME THERE....100 FT FROM THE STAGE...NEVER A PROBLEM AND I WAS THERE FOR 24 HOURS...THE NIGHT BEFORE AND LEFT AT 10PM THE DAY OF....MOST PEOPLE HAD A GREAT TIME....EXCEPT THOSE THAT WERE 20 FT FROM THE STAGE....I WENT TO THE FILLMORE AND WINTERLAND ALOT AND TO BE CLOSE LIKE THAT INVITES TROUBLE....ESPECIALLY WHEN THE STONES CAME ON THEY MOB MOVED FORWARD.....50 FT...I SAT 100 FEET AWAY ALL DAY ON MY BLANKET AND HAD MY ICE CHEST (FOAM CHEAPY) WITH FOOD AND SUCH...WHEN THEY WERE THROWING FRISBIES AROUND I WAS THROWING SLICES OF WHITE BREAD....
this is so claustrophobic..!!
I know, right? So well put!
altamont the end of the hippie dream. the stones weren't hippies and the stones hiring the angels ended in disaster 4 all.
Hell Angels were just artists giving their impression of the Vietnam war.
yep I was 6 years old. I'm actually kind of glad I missed this era. I wouldn't have been able to handle the acid. But it's really cool to watch this stuff. LOL
Oh yeah the music lives waay beyond the bullsht
True that.
Why did the y get hells angels involved in this concert anyway? And where can I download the entire movie? Have fun!/Livsängel.
*Devolution.*
The stage being too easy to get to, and the Angels wailing out on kids who are tripping out on lsd and shit...no suprise shit hit the fan.
2:57 1969's State-of-the-Art Ninja Moves lol
My uncle's went to this. Said it was phenomenal.
sendra low did he now? my uncle Garett Conn and my father Andrew Kier attended it and said it was wretched. scary -among the most frightening instances of their lives. 'Pops' up and move us from Northern California to Idaho afterwards without explanation.
and my father was no fading violet. he was 6' 05" and in 76 i watched him fight two armed gunmen scumbags who came on our property. alone. unarmed.to a draw
@ 2:15 i love they sound guy dancing
xoexo
Not a good combination- the energy of the Airplane combined with an alcohol fueled biker gang who’s daily menu includes violence and criminal activity clashing with hippies on acid.
CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?!!
The summer of love ended on August 9th, 1969. Look the date up.
FYI: never offer the Hell’s Angels all the beer they can drink. You may think you are coming out ahead, but it’s not going to be pretty. Hell’s Angels: hold my beer while I show them how much beer I can drink.
exactly,...
i can assure you being stoned out of their mind's wouldn't of made them more aggressive, blame the $500's worth of beer they were given as payment, not weed
I didn't go to this concert, but when I heard about, I cheered for the Hells Angels. Hippies back then were the hipsters of their time. And like the hipsters, they managed to ruin everything.
