Nature doesn't have a refrigerator outside. I plant our seeds in October in locations of our property. Use potting soil, peat moss, and little sand. They are covered in a about 1 - 2 inches. Pack down and water. I stake close by and place a metal wired cage around the site. Keeps animals from digging them up. Next spring, most grow and breaking ground. Last spring planting now are 3 - 6 feet high. Our 3 -4 year old trees are already producing. 5 mature trees are producing so much. Good luck. I like nature grow our trees, no containers, no frig, and much handling.
The refrigerator is supposed to simulate fall/Winther to trigger germination
Key point is meeting requirements for seed germination exotic plants can't find locally in nature.
This video worked perfectly for me germinating a bunch of conkers from a tree outside my house! Thanks so much was a lot of fun collecting and planting :D
Thank you for this great video! I was sad to discover the ancient conker tree nearby has been felled, so I am having a go to germinate some conkers to plant in its place.
Thanks I am happy that you have found this useful. 🌿 Happy Growing xx😊
Usually either disease or, more likely, someone wants more light on thier garden...
Exactly the same reason here, the local council is going to cut the tree down because it's a danger 😢
We have collected loads of conkers and are trying to germinate them.
Also it's right on the corner to our street and been a beacon when we return home. so when we move, we will hopefully have it's "children" with us lol
The ones in the paper towel & box you let germinate too long. Checking them more often & planting as soon as they’ve sprouted will help prevent them from molding & growing super long tails.

Well done. Great vid 😊
I found 1 conker today, and will try the paper towel method. But when to begin? It is still August.
Very useful tips, thank you.
Just plant in soil outside, works just as well.Thank-you

I put two Conkers in separate pots on 25th November 2023 & over the last week it’s now Tuesday 09th of January 2024 they have both started growing roots. I have them just below the soil surface & I noticed a white crack on one of the shells after I gave them a good cold watering so I assumed one had in fact started to sprout.
Ths nice job . Πατριώτης Ελληνάρας ;
I grabbed a few to do while walking my macaw parrot today I don't think he can eat them I think there toxic to macaw but I wanted to try sprout a couple for bonsai babies next spring, think I'll go with the plastic bag in a tub 3 weeks you left yours, did you go in and add any more water to them in that time.. thanks for the video I was sure someone else had to jave had the same idea, are you planning a forest with those you got loads..I just grabbed a handful...

Is this germination process season dependent or is it random.
You do that because you plant more than a few or because it's the right way?
Because I watch others, they do it a little differently
Maybe the bucket outside never got cold enough nice video.
Can you apply this method to other nuts, for example? Walnuts, hazelnuts,...
I have collected a few from the ground after full winter season. Excited to try the container/paper towel method in the cupboard. Do I need to resoak the paper towel or just the one time and wait few weeks? Great video
hi linda thanks for watching my video just keep an eye out over the next few weeks if the paper towel is dry just spray a little water to moist it. thanks n good luck xx
@@blossomnaturally3768 ty. They all floated in 💧 I think they arent good but trying anyway.
i germinated em in fridge and roots are coming out now... middle of january, what now? put em in pots? outside or inside? i dont have shed or garden, thed froze out side? or can they be in pots inside near window?
Hi thanks for watching my video, they can be left outside as long as it is not freezing.. u can cover the pots with any sort of clothes to keep out the cold.. they grow in the cold naturaly.. just don't let the soil dry out..
Did you stratify these first and if so, when did you start to put them in the containers?
Hi no I did it exactly as in the video.. I started putting them in when they Germinated as you see in the video.. Thanks
Question. WHEN do you do this? In October, when you can pick the conkers? In the spring? Do the conkers need to get cold/frozen beforehand, or do they germinate despite not haveing been cold? (Like oaks do). Also, do you keep them indoors, or outdoors for the germination?
I did exactly as the video (picked them in September time) and immersed in water for a week or so then put in takeaway containers in damp kitchen towels in the dark for a month. They have germinated fine and have been potted. I didn’t think it would work but it does.
Hi no I didn't put them in the cold or frozen them beforehand it was very cold so I just left the in that bucket till I was ready to do the video.. I collected them few weeks before.. Thanks..
@@chasethemorninguk that is great.. It really makes you feel soo good when you see the Germinating.. I'm soo glad you tried it..
Hi thanks for watching the video.
I did this when it was conker season, I kept them inside for the germination. I didn't keep them in the fridge before hand I just soaked them in some water as you see in the video.
Can cactus/succulent soil be used instead of sand?
This time I was cold stratifying Common Horse-Chestnut seeds in the refrigerator but they did not germinate at all. All of them have failed to germinate. The reason why they did not germinate is because I did not store the seeds properly. I stored them in the warm room temperature. What is the temperature for storing horse chestnut seeds before stratification? Where should I store Common Horse-Chestnut seeds before cold stratifying them? Where can I store those seeds at? Which one is the best seed storage location before stratification? Please make sure that you should reply to my comment.

Mine are starting to look a lot like yours at 10:45, do you have any advice for what I should do as they keep growing? I've got two planted in the ground in a planter we have, but I've put plastic bottles around them to protect them, I also have some others in plastic pots that have roots, but haven't got stems yet, what should I do with them once they grow out? thanks.
Hi Nathan thanks for watching my channel. I will be growing a few in containers to keep in my garden as I have no soil to put them, the rest I will sell as people have ordered them. I still have a few that I did last year in pots and plastic bottles they do grow really slowly so you can keep them for a few years.
I am going to see have many years I can keep them in pots.
Hope this is helpful to you please let me know if you like to know anything else..thanks again for watching.
@@blossomnaturally3768 Yes, funnily enough. We've had some cold weather over the past few days, could that have impacted the ones that have already shot through the ground? here's a photo of one pbs.twimg.com/media/EyKjTbuWEAAvzLS?format=jpg&name=4096x4096 does that look normal? the fact it's brown is concerning to me.
@@nathanoafc0132
That is normal on some of them.
If you look at the video you'll see some of are like yours.. I have pics I done today how do I send you them if you want.
@@nathanoafc0132
These plants are very hardy they can stand any weather so don't worry to much just keep an eye on them. They don't need a lot of looking after.

So that germination time don't need any air in ?. I was thinking oxigen is important for life ??.
@@radurobert1 hi I'm sorry that you're ones have not germinated I did exactly as the video.. this is the first time i germinated them. I have shown in the video few different ways you can germinate them try different method..
Are these the edible chestnuts?
I not sure never tried to eat them though.. Please research before you try to eat any. Thanks
India me hoga😋😋
Yes it should works perfectly fine.. But you must Germinate them and grow for few months before you plant them in the ground.. Family n friends Have tried it Bangladesh n majority have servived.. If they servive the first year they should be OK. Thanks
HORSE CHESTNUTS ARE POISONOUS.
Why grow these? And to you all who don't know, these are byckeyes.
The picture is of sweet chestnuts, not conkers.
The first image is of a chestnut, not horse chestnut
