Kentucky Wildcats TV: Kentucky 78 Wichita State 76 Full Highlights 2014 NCAA Basketball Tournament Kentucky vs Wichita State Full Game Highlights 2014 03 23
This is a game that never should have been in the round of 32. Kentucky was better than an 8 seed and Wichita State got hung out to dry by the committee. This was a great game and based on how far UK got, Wichita State could have made the Final Four or even won the national title.
KYExtemper well if guys were a final four team then u should of had beaten uk. you have to play the best teams to show that u are a final four team. It doesn't make since to try to avoid them. u would have to play them at some point anyways so why not and go out and beat them early in the tourney?
Kentucky just didn't have the resume to justify making them much better than an 8 seed. The only team worth a damn they beat all year was Louisville in Rupp. Calipari builds towards March though. He plays to get better in the regular season and then plans to win in March. That's why they've over performed in March so often. The loss to Kansas state was the first time he's lost to a team that was more than 1 seed line lower since he's been at UK. It sucks for the teams that get out in their region because based on talent alone Kentucky is almost always under seeded so one or more teams in their path are gonna have to beat someone that's typically much better than their seed.
@@Antbeast23 one missed three pointer as time expires is not a referendum of an entire season - Kentucky should never have been an 8-seed and Wichita State should never have drawn them in their second round matchup. That was a Final Four game played on the third day of the tournament. Both teams got screwed.
The last 8 minutes of this game is basketball at its finest. Both teams were throwing hay makers at each other h;itting monster shot after monster shot.
Best game of the entire tournament that year, bar none! It really was like watching a heavyweight fight with both fighters taking and then giving as good as they'd just gotten. Basketball played at a really high level for 40 minutes by both teams.
best game ive ever seen by far the atmosphere was awesome the rythm of the game, cleanthony was unreal the harrison twins were making almost every shot they took. just overall a great game that it shouldnt if been in the round of 32. im from wichita and wichita state fan but oh man i was proud of being a shocker because we play great but like every sport theres a winner and a loser now it was our turn to be defeated but we took that defeat with our heads up. SHOCKERS BABY!!!!!!!!!!!
just came back to watch my boy vanvleet once again. its funny cause when he played earlier i hated him for missing the game winner. but now hes literally one of the rapters best bench players.
The last play Gregg Marshall drew up had 3 options. 1st option was to get the ball to early, if that failed then the 2nd option was Baker, if that failed the 3rd option was Van Vleet. Thats actually exactly right. Kentuckys defense was not good through the whole tournament. I am a UK fan saying this. Their defense gave up something like 1.12 points per possession which normally gets you beat every single time. That is the AVERAGE of all their tournament games. They won because their offense put up insane numbers.
Yep. I am also a UK fan I was born and raised in Lexington, but not going to college there, but my bracket had them losing to Witchita in the tournament
I was at this game. Very intense. Kentucky was bigger at every position, and constantly drove the lane getting fouls. The way the refs were calling the game, nobody could defend Kentucky. Randall and the Harrison twins bulled right through defenders and didn't get called for offensive fouls. Kentucky shot the ball very good from the outside and bulled their way to baskets in the lane. Baker and Early were unbelievable on offense for the Shockers. Early did the same thing to Louisville the previous year. He was the best offensive player on the floor. One of them should have gotten the last shot, but the Shockers had their chance at the win. If the last shot goes in.... oh well, not to be. It was a fantastic game, and that arena was the place to be!
+masterdoug69 There was also the 2 ghost fouls shown in the video that Aaron Harrison was called for when Ron Baker drove. Plus about midway through the 2nd half there was a stat showing Wich St. had shot more free throws. Anyway, I thought this game was good because the refs didn't decide it which is rare in college basketball as a whole.
I think this should be a lesson to all young talent who think not going to Kentucky is a good idea. Had Andrew Wiggins chose the BLUE he would be in the final four after putting his own brother and perhaps both teams could've had perfect records at the time. Now we will never know and Andrews college days were not as glamorous and high profile in March as everyone hoped. If him and Embiid are high first round picks and laid an egg in the tourney, tough for me to call them prime time competitors just yet. Shabazz from UConn is a whole different story. I'd rather face Florida and their seniors who have beat us three times already then UConn and Shabazz. BBN
Man, I get that Kentucky played good D, but come on, as a coach you HAVE to figure out a way to draw up a play to get the ball in Early's hands for that last shot. The guy was unreal this game, especially in the second half. I'd rather see him taking a contested 30-footer than probably anyone except Baker taking a pretty good look.
I think the play was to go to Early on the flare screen on the out of bounds pass, he looked open for a split second but the guy didn't throw it, Van Vleet looked to be the 3rd option and even he looked for Early once he got it but there was no way he could get it to him in time so yeah, lol, just what i saw anyways lol
I'm not 100% sold on the last play being drawn up for Early, if you watch the last play close, Early started out directly in front of the in-bounds, looked to set a screen, and for some reason popped out all the way on the other side of the court. If I were Gregg Marshall and I DEFINITELY wanted Early to take the last shot, why wouldn't Early pop back toward the ball like Van Fleet did? I'm just saying that if Marshall wanted the ball in Early's hands, he should not have had him THAT far away from the ball. Funny thing is...he was WIDE OPEN! When the in-bounds came into Van Fleet, Early didn't have anyone within 8 feet of him. (But again) it would have been a cross court pass. Why did Marshall have Early so far away from the ball? I've never understood that last play either. I'm no Gregg Marshall, but I would have drawn up a play setting 2 picks for Early, and if he still wasn't open going toward the basket, have Early just pop out toward the ball like Van Fleet did and take my chances. It's a common basketball in-bounds play. But instead Cleanthony was told to pop out to the other side of the court. NO ONE even set a pick for Early. HE WAS LOOKING TO SET A PICK FOR SOMEONE ELSE, and then pop out to the other side. Very weird to me. But I'm glad that's what happened! lol! **Also, it was one of the greatest college basketball games ever played. Not just in the Dance. Both teams threw HAYMAKER after HAYMAKER and the other team would just PUNCH RIGHT BACK! It was awesome. And I'm glad my Cats were a part of it. Wichita State was such a great team.
He wouldn't pop back to the ball cause that's where the defense is, the most open spot on the court to take a shot was where Early popped to, But I agree that it was definitely one of the best college games in recent memory.
Well it had been a long time since WSU played a team with a decent record other then Indiana State. Couldn't lead by 20 points like they did against the 14-17, 16-15, 7-21, 8-19, etc, teams they usually did.
Jordan W same I live in Wichita and also a WSU fan and i still miss these very hardworking and talented players vanvleet, Baker, cotton, and early. Because this year they have these lazy mf bums who do not even care to win.
Kentucky made so many shots that shouldn't have gone in. The bank three and the randle and 1 that was out of control. Plus other 3's that we're guarded as good as they could be guarded and still went in. Credit to UK for making them and playing tough but it could have been a WSU win without one or two of those tough shots
Just watching these highlights no question early should of been a first rd pick. Transition game has a good shoot needs some work. He's a big guy who I think could guard 3s. He'll never be a defensive player of the yr. But he can hold his own. Randle got him a few times but the Knicks did very well getting him.
Looking back, you'd think Early would be great in the NBA. I don't know what happened, but he was a huge disappointment! Excellent college player, didn't translate for some reason.
those were the first two options off the inbound pass but UK was guarding that well so Van Vleet was the third, not a bad look but would have liked to seen baker or Early take it even this Vleet has a very high 3pt shooting percentage
mike magrino seriously!!!!!!!! No one mentions that but even though I wasn't going for anyone in particular, I was pissed when 23 shot the ball instead of early or baker
Just think if he would have made that last shot....WSU student and fan..we could have went all the way easily..we had the talent. This was Kentucky's hardest game the entire tournament.
Because Kentucky played WAY better in the WSU game that the other games. They played good the whole tourney until they lost, but If they didn't play nearly flawless against WSU, they were out of the tourney early and would have been ridiculed as a under-performing team. WSU brought the best out of KU, and they rode that nearly to the national title.
Such a shame this was a Round of 32 game. Should have been Final 4. Committee screwed WSU. No reason a 1 seed should play at the top of their game and lose to a true 8 seed, which Kentucky had no business being.
Maybe the sweetest win of the tournament for Kentucky because nobody but Big Blue Nation fans gave the Cats a snowball's chance in hell of beating the previously unbeaten Shockers. Even the body language of the Wichita St. players in this game was as if they were just waiting for Kentucky to fold like a cheap suit, but it never happened. GO CATS!!
Kentucky was much taller than Wichita state. I think if Wichita state had slightly more height they would have won cause Kentucky was getting lobs, dunks, and rebounds left and right.
Had Fred VanVleet made the 3, they would've stayed unbeaten. Instead, it caroms off the rim. Kentucky gets the walk-off defencive rebound. The buzzer says, "Ohhhhhhhhhhh!" The game is over!
To everyone who said the better team didn't win is wrong. Kentucky was the most talented team in all of college thy just couldn't work as a team until the end of the regular season. Kentucky was better than anyone in the tournament, yes, even UConn.
@@msh6865 kentucky has had multiple scandals chief. How soon we forget about point shaving in return for better recruiting stock, illegally paying players, the academics scandal, letting illegible players play constantly, etc etc.
Calipari might not be the best X's & O's coach in CBB, BUT if there is one coach I would pick for a one game scenario, JUST ONE COACH, I would hands down take John Calipari over anybody in the country. The man can flat out motivate and get it done for the one game scene. Idk what he tells his player (insert joke by trolls here) but it works.
Nunya Bidness I'm a die hard and bleed blue... Cal is terrible @ X's and O's and it's no secret to anyone that knows the game.... it's one part of coaching and by far his biggest flaw...
Nunya Bidness Buddy, I've been a Big Blue fan since I was born. Raised in a family that bleeds blue in South Central Kentucky.. I'm no bandwagon fan.. I know everything there is to know about Kentucky Wildcats and our history.. If you think Calipari is a great X's & O's coach, you don't know Kentucky basketball.. He's arguably the greatest recruiter ever. Excellent motivator and wonderful at getting young teams to gel, but HE IS IN NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM A GREAT X'S & O'S COACH!! Also, real Cats fan know our coaches strengths and weaknesses. All coaches have them. Real Cats fans aren't afraid to point out something that it true.. And what I said is completely true.. You don't have to like what I said, but any level minded Cats fans knows we don't have the greatest X's & O's coach....
Nunya Bidness Just stop.. Calling someone a bandwagon fan just bc they don't agree with you is lame... All I said is that he MIGHT NOT BE THE BEST X's & O's coach in the country and guess what, now your saying you never said he was the best.. What's your point then? Why say anything to me if you agree. I never said he was BAD, he just isn't the best.. Then you chimed in like a smartass, and are making no sense.... You never once seem my call for Calipari's head so stop making shit up dude... You look like a fool right now... Keep backtracking....... Find another word besides bandwagoner... It's overused and just not true 90% of the time.. Someone doesn't have to agree with everything u think and say. That doesn't mean they're a bandwagon fan......
Nunya Bidness Me and my kind was calling for his head? When did I ever call for his head? I never once said that... Again, your back to making things up..... And no I hate zone, it's a lazy way to play defense.. It only hides the fact that your player won't get low and play man to man..... So no, I don't think they should play zone.. Try again.....
This was the easiest upset to predict in the bracket. Witchita was awful for a 1 seed, and I think everyone knew Kentucky was far better than any 8 seed normally is
Nice faulty hindsight! Awful for a 1 seed? Any team that goes 35-0 in ANY conference isn't awful. You obviously didn't watch the game, because if you had, you would know WSU wasn't overrated and that KU played the best they had played all year. Even at that, KU barely won. If Fred's last shot goes in, WSU likely goes on to the Final Four and maybe championship.
@@masterdoug69 I disagree with this guy saying that Wichita St was an awful #1 seed as well but YOU lost all credibility when you referred to Kentucky as KU. Clearly you dont watch as much college basketball as you lead on.
@@jonathanreynolds5040 Really? That is all you've got? I never have liked Kentucky, that was intentional. Fact is, last second shot goes in, nobody on the planet is saying WSU was an awful #1 seed and everybody is saying KU underachieved and was a disappointment.
Greg Anthony literally LOLing after every play. Didn't realize he did it so often when I watched this live, but this is ridiculous lol. Actually kind of distracting from the video. But hey, better than having Joe Buck call the game.
this is where lack of consistent competition in the regular season comes to bite in the tournament. people who get tired of hearing that WSU's SOS is why they can never be considered a true powerhouse have to deal with it, because it's 100% true. wichita state was grossly overrated to begin with. put them in the B1G, SEC, or even the mountain west, WSU would not be 34-0 heading into the tournament. i'll admit that the shockers made for an adequate feel-good story, but honestly, there were 11-seed teams who i believe would've beaten WSU. i don't have anything against the shockers personally, nor am i a kentucky fan, but it pisses me off when people are either don't know or blatantly ignore calipari's stupendous recruiting efforts and say that kentucky got lucky or the refs gave them the game, because at the end of the day, kentucky is far and vastly superior in terms of talent
***** wichita state's good, no doubt, i never said they were bad. it's just that from top to bottom, kentucky's clearly got more raw talent. my main gripe was just a bunch of trolls who don't know anything about basketball and think that kentucky got lucky
bryan lai Kentucky made a big shot...winning by two doesn't mean your point about them being 'wildly overrated' is valid at all. Kentucky had a charmed tourney. The winner of this game would've been in the national title game. I think this proved how GOOD the Shockers were...it took a freakin' pair of rabbits out of the Wildcats collective butts to win this game. Best game of the tourney
I agree with that, but Wichita State was without a doubt a good team. Great? Ehh. 35-1 great in a Power 6 conference, no... But they was absolutely a top 10 team last year.
@Manu Ginobilis Bold Spot; It took a rabbit out of their ass to win this game? The entire second half was close... It's not like UK was down big and made this amazing run and hit crazy shot after crazy shot to end the game. WSU matched UK on almost every shot in the second half. Uk just happened to hit their free throws. It wasn't luck. It was more like all that talent started to mesh plus WSU (again, good team) being overrated the entire year. Overrated doesn't mean bad, so don't jump to that conclusion. It means simply overrated.. They was not a 1 seed. And they was no 40-0 team. Period. They was top 10. But there is nothing special about a top 10 team year in and year out. Also, I could understand someone saying what you said about the Wisconsin game or Michigan game, but UK hit a 3 with over a minute left to take the lead. That was more than enough time for WSU to do something, they just didn't. Hitting an open 3, then making almost all your FT has nothing to do with luck. They lost, fair and square.
Not to mention, your argument is weak.. Not trying to be rude, but it could also be said that Cleanthony Early's second half heroics are the only reason WSU was even in the game. He went off in the second and UK still won. Doesn't sound like UK is the only ones to pulled a rabbit out of their asses that night. Early going for what 35? And 20+ of that was in the 2nd half?? Yet UK was the the only lucky ones. Things can always be interrupted more than one way.
I didn't see the best play of all where Ron baker deliberately sticks his face in to the elbow wanting a flagrant sympathy call. This was supposs to be a great team? No class. No self respecting team would try that. It would be beneath them.
Well you have to think even if it was on purpose then how is it really dirty? Players from teams all the time especially teams like Brigham Young flop so much to draw charges it's sometimes funny because some times their acting becomes so obvious. And that's not considered playing dirty. I don't think Baker did it on purpose, but if he did I would be giving credit for putting his body on the line and taking one for his team. Also if you look at the play, it happened so fast, do you really think he had time to get hit on purpose? He was trying to steal the ball or trap him against the sideline.
If it hadn't been UK, it'd probably have been Louisville. If not them, probably Michigan. That's a tough three-team stretch of games if ever there was.
Anthony DeSimone Well when you consider Kentucky lost their best inside defender in Willie Cauley Stein in the 1st half of their game against Louisville, it makes you think that if Willie Cauley Stein didn't play against Wichita State, then the Shockers would have most likely won.
WSU Early out of bounds at 07:35 and first to touch the ball after pass, should have been ruled a turnover but refs didn't call it. Scored 3 points off that. WSU should have blown them out in that 1 vs 8 matchup. OVERRATED!
He was fully established inbounds before the pass had been made. Therefore, no turnover. If he had not had both feet inbounds before receiving that pass, then you might have a claim.
Anthony DeSimone No, doesn't matter. If you travel out of bounds you cannot be the first person to get the next pass which he was and he scored 3 points off it. It's an unfair advantage where you can ditch your man. They've already called this in another tournament game, it doesn't get called a lot but they are calling it.
In the game of football the rule is you can't be the first to touch the ball after being out of bounds. In BASKETBALL you need to re establish in bounds and you are ok. Usually you do that with two feet. You were correct but wrong spirt. That's a legal play
This is a game that never should have been in the round of 32. Kentucky was better than an 8 seed and Wichita State got hung out to dry by the committee. This was a great game and based on how far UK got, Wichita State could have made the Final Four or even won the national title.
It's the tournament committee... they always find a way to screw UK over.

or not
At the time who would've thought that Fred VanVleet would end up with the best NBA career out of all the players on this floor?
I know right. Even when VanVleet was drafted he still had to work extra hard to get minutes and he finally blossomed in Toronto
Better than randle?

He'll never be a defensive player of the yr. But he can hold his own. Randle got him a few times but the Knicks did very well getting him.
Looking back, you'd think Early would be great in the NBA. I don't know what happened, but he was a huge disappointment! Excellent college player, didn't translate for some reason.
@@masterdoug69 he got shot in the knee at a strip club in queens....sad
why didn't they give the ball to early or baker for the final shot?
those were the first two options off the inbound pass but UK was guarding that well so Van Vleet was the third, not a bad look but would have liked to seen baker or Early take it even this Vleet has a very high 3pt shooting percentage
mike magrino seriously!!!!!!!! No one mentions that but even though I wasn't going for anyone in particular, I was pissed when 23 shot the ball instead of early or baker
I like willie attitude when he dunks😂
Just think if he would have made that last shot....WSU student and fan..we could have went all the way easily..we had the talent. This was Kentucky's hardest game the entire tournament.
Because Kentucky played WAY better in the WSU game that the other games. They played good the whole tourney until they lost, but If they didn't play nearly flawless against WSU, they were out of the tourney early and would have been ridiculed as a under-performing team. WSU brought the best out of KU, and they rode that nearly to the national title.
who knew fred vanfleet would be an nba champion from wichita state
Easyscores And he still wear 23...sub to the channel 🙏🏽
@@InsideTheEdge_ you got it
You don't have Poythress's block on Early. It was monster.
Ikr ap beat his junk #BBN stand up
Sad thing is a ton of WSU fans had shirts on there that said "only march matters".....ouch....
Such a shame this was a Round of 32 game. Should have been Final 4. Committee screwed WSU. No reason a 1 seed should play at the top of their game and lose to a true 8 seed, which Kentucky had no business being.
Yeah half this Kentucky team went top 10 in nba draft lol
Doesn’t matter you’re a 1 seed you should be able to play anyone
Maybe the sweetest win of the tournament for Kentucky because nobody but Big Blue Nation fans gave the Cats a snowball's chance in hell of beating the previously unbeaten Shockers. Even the body language of the Wichita St. players in this game was as if they were just waiting for Kentucky to fold like a cheap suit, but it never happened. GO CATS!!
People ought to know by now if UK us in your bracket, it's by far the toughest region they try and get UK beat as early as possible
Julius Randle @ 6:10 WOW!
Great video! Amazing game!
Start wearing your freaking suit again CAL!!!!

The ncaa is a joke for this game Kentucky should not have been an 8 seed and would have won a championship for not the loss of wcs

Kentucky gonna pound Michigan and then win the title.
mattkarnyski ummmm yeah about that....
Bankai2169 they did lol.
metroidM1A1
UK won the title? Huh, I coulda sworn UConn won
UConn won the title because the refs wouldn't allow Kentucky to take it.
Arther Palmer Kentucky had fourteen more attempts at the line than UConn. Nice try
Kentucky was much taller than Wichita state. I think if Wichita state had slightly more height they would have won cause Kentucky was getting lobs, dunks, and rebounds left and right.
Kentucky busted my bracket last season. They beat michigan and Louisville. I had Louisville in the Final 4
great game...
Had Fred VanVleet made the 3, they would've stayed unbeaten. Instead, it caroms off the rim. Kentucky gets the walk-off defencive rebound.
The buzzer says, "Ohhhhhhhhhhh!" The game is over!
I love the Kentucky game
some of these fouls were horrible calls now that i see this game over....
brian lilly 2 on harrison were terrible lol
To everyone who said the better team didn't win is wrong. Kentucky was the most talented team in all of college thy just couldn't work as a team until the end of the regular season. Kentucky was better than anyone in the tournament, yes, even UConn.
What the f***? How can you say better than UConn?
Cle was open
At 4:00 minutes how did he know he was going to bounce off his shoulder before the live camera even showed it?
I thought Kentucky was finish in the tournament I guess I was wrong XD
Those seeds are useless.the underdog 8 seed with 8 mcdonald all americans! That just means they slacked and played lazy all year

Doesn’t matter how many McDonald’s all Americans you got to play like a team and uk was young and didn’t play like a team till later
FINALLYYYYYYY
I didn't notice it watching the game live but after watching this Greg Anthony needs a new catchphrase.
1:20 where is the foul by Harrison didn’t touch him
It’s college. If you breathe on a player the ref will call it
Not bad for a small school that plays by the rules Go Shockers!
True but, they ran into the program with the most wins in history, that also plays by the rules because of 24/7/365 scrutiny.

That doesn't mean they're a bandwagon fan......
if you think Calipari is not a good x's and o's coach you know nothing about basketball.
Remember now, everything about Kentucky comes from the University of Kansas!
Which means nothing! Kentucky is a far better program than Kansas!
2 lame ass states arguing over a game hahah
Actually Canada is the birthplace of basketball.
羽川翼 The creator of basketball was indeed Canadian, however he formulized the game in Massachusetts which is the US.
Nino Brown Where are you from?
Kentucky made a lot of shots they shouldn’t have made this game
this is where lack of consistent competition in the regular season comes to bite in the tournament. people who get tired of hearing that WSU's SOS is why they can never be considered a true powerhouse have to deal with it, because it's 100% true. wichita state was grossly overrated to begin with. put them in the B1G, SEC, or even the mountain west, WSU would not be 34-0 heading into the tournament. i'll admit that the shockers made for an adequate feel-good story, but honestly, there were 11-seed teams who i believe would've beaten WSU. i don't have anything against the shockers personally, nor am i a kentucky fan, but it pisses me off when people are either don't know or blatantly ignore calipari's stupendous recruiting efforts and say that kentucky got lucky or the refs gave them the game, because at the end of the day, kentucky is far and vastly superior in terms of talent
Things can always be interrupted more than one way.
every other play is an and 1
love my CATS
nice!!
Ohh ho ho ho ho ho.--Greg Anthony
Wichita State goes undefeated cause they don’t play nobody, then they come across a real team like UK and get beat. Sorry, but facts are facts. 🤷🏻♂️
I knew they'd lose sometime soon
If it hadn't been UK, it'd probably have been Louisville. If not them, probably Michigan. That's a tough three-team stretch of games if ever there was.
Anthony DeSimone Well when you consider Kentucky lost their best inside defender in Willie Cauley Stein in the 1st half of their game against Louisville, it makes you think that if Willie Cauley Stein didn't play against Wichita State, then the Shockers would have most likely won.
We'll never know, now, will we?
Kansas is a forgotten place.....................Obviously CHOKE CENTRAL

WSU Early out of bounds at 07:35 and first to touch the ball after pass, should have been ruled a turnover but refs didn't call it. Scored 3 points off that. WSU should have blown them out in that 1 vs 8 matchup. OVERRATED!
A win is a win
