- So after the previous video - I need to play a persona game and as we have the remake of Persona 3 - Persona 3 Reload coming out VERY soon I decided to check out the character trailers to learn more about the game and get a sneak peek as to the gameplay - safe to say...I am so down to play this xD! The thing with Persona protagonists is that they’re technically silent, in the sense that in-battle voice lines are the only times you’ll really get to hear them speak, but the dialogue options you get to respond to other characters with during cutscenes usually end up carrying some degree of characterization for them anyway.
From what I recall…
P3 protag’s responses largely give off an apathetic, classical emo-boy tone.
P4 protag’s responses can range from serious-serious, to comically-serious, to incredibly wacky and zany, earning him the nickname “Chad Narukami.”
P5 protag’s responses often dip into sass, sarcasm, and generally give off theater kid vibes.
And the female MC from P3P was very bubbly and outgoing

Romance is optional but hanging out with people and forming relationships with other characters is required. It just so happens that some of the relationships can turn romantic.
that is cool with me! I like the idea of forming friendships and getting to know the characters so as long as its not forcing you down the romance route if you don't want too is cool! Regardless the cast of characters is awesome!
@@georgieegames Yep, in the P3 Remake they finally acknowledged the part about the choice to how you wanna proceed with the characters: do you want to stay friends or do you interested in romance with them, its all up to you. It was already addressed and implemented in the previously released Persona series games, like Persona 4 (after they got feedback from P3=FES) Golden and etc, so im glad they did it here too.
@@georgieegames it's not even restricted to the main cast members, each relationship (or social link as the game calls them) is represented by a card from the Tarot. For instance Mitsuru represents the Empress card and Yukari represents the lovers card and so on. The character representing the sun card, A man named Akinari Kamiki is a man who is dying from a terminal illness, during his link you help him come to terms with his situation, the links can also improve the way you fight, such as giving you access to a unique skill.
@@georgieegames this is actually funny cuz in P3 original you HAD to romance the girls. It didn’t give you a choice. And it was cuz the director Hashino said he never had a female friendship before. Obviously ppl found this weird, so with P4-5 they added platonic female routes. They didn’t plan for ppl to play their routes unless they wanted to romance.
But it was just so bizarre to me that this grown man never had a friendship with a woman before. The main party girls are well written in the game tho so this weirdness will not affect that tho, for the most part.
Wel not really required. But it is heavily encouraged, especially in 5 where you get unique abilities from spending time with people

One thing about all these character trailers is that they show off their early game personalities.
The great thing about persona and the social link system is that characters change and grow over the course of the game.
Junpie for instance is the comedic best friend but he also has one of the best arc's in the game IMO.
It's also fun that unlike the other Persona games not all the characters like each other at first. They're all together because they have to and over time learn to like and respect each other but this game is called truma bonding the game for a reason.

15:35 Fan fact: In the Japanese version of the games script they usually use English for unusual for the majority of audience language. English versions of the script sometimes use a lot of French.
Since its original release in 2006 P3 itself used a lot of Latin and French in the game (for example original soundtrack and openings) or promotions so its a great callback when Mitsuru speaks with it.
I played P3 as a reviewer back in 2006, so it's interesting to see how Atlus gives the new audience a glimpse of each character. There's just enough to get a general idea of who they are, but without spoiling anything. Knowing how everything plays out... well, if you know, you _know._
I'm sure you've gathered already, but Persona is a spin-off to the SMT series, taking place in an alternate timeline, inspired by 'SMT: If...'. Fans often refer to (the modern) Persona as the "Happy Path," where shite hasn't yet hit the fan as they would in SMT.
Ya, from what I hear in SMT, the world as you know it is toast, and the best you can do is try to recreate something ranging between close enough to similar.
But with Persona, your job is to prevent it from getting to the point of no return.
@@thegreendragon5390 Yeah, SMT is usually very bleak. Generally a post apocalyptic setting, althought some of the agmes let you experience the pre or mid apocalyptic events.
The MC of P3 is Makoto Yuki. It’s his canon name. However, you can name the hero any name you want. Canon doesn’t matter for anyone’s individual play through.

@@wdragon92190 The whole back and forth with the name thing is tiring. Ppl can prefer any name they like, so long as they recognize what’s canon and that people don’t have to follow canon, it’s fine. But I do think Minato is a terrible name, literally any name is better than Minato Arisato in my book. I’d sooner call him Roger.
I'm really enjoying your Persona reactions. Persona 3 invented the modern Persona formula that 4 and 5 also used: half dungeon crawler and half social simulator. Completing social links for characters is pretty important because not only does it give you more experience when you fuse personas of the matching arcana, it also allows you to get to know these characters and bond with them. A big part of Persona in general is the unbreakable bond you form with these characters over the course of the game.
It's great you'll be playing Reload rather than any previous incarnation of P3 if you don't care for dating sims. Previously you HAD to date everyone (and cheat on all of them) if you wanted to not only get all the story content but also fighting bonuses. I was so happy when it was revealed that you could finally have completely plantonic relations with people and max them out instead of being forced to become romantic after a certain point. Playing a harem protag can be fun, but not when it's your only option.
Yeah, the only good version of original Persona 3 is P3FES with a lot of Mods. The original atmosphere in FES is superb but its hindered by some strange game design decisions (even if we take into account that its the first Persona with date sim elements and themes of P3) like this. Its still very sad there is no official alternatives, considering how bad P3P PC port is too.

Koromaru is the best boy in Persona and that is the reason he has been in my party since the day he joined the team, I'd go so far as to say he's the best dog in gaming (that I'm aware of) and I love him so much
A lot of the charm of persona games are the cast. Also the music. It was great to see how excited you were about the spell system being familiar and I can't wait to see the journey as you get to experience the plot for the first time!

For the Protagonist, you typically are able to name the protag. I think his official canon name though is Makoto Yuki.
Yeah Persona and the Shin Megami Tensei (and larger megaten games as a whole) use those same spell names across all of them. You’ve probably already heard by now but Persona’s actually the spinoff from SMT and yet it now more popular, funny how that happened

It's insane to see someone with the perspective of mainline megaten coming into persona. I think you'll definitely enjoy the combat there's no press turns but a shift feature exists to take advantage of exploiting weaknesses. Oh, of course fusion is really vital too just like nocturne.

I'm excited to see you take on these games. Yeah, the spell system pretty much overlaps with the smt system, as do a bunch of the demons you can fight and use, so crossing over will be quite easy for you. The battle system will definitely take no time for someone like you to learn, although it's clear to me that they added battle elements into this remake that come from Persona 4 and 5, adding tools and options to your belt as well as QoL improvements. Honestly, I'm excited to get my hands on this game again.
In the Portable version of p3, they added in a female protag option with some unique social and romancing options. They similarly added another red haired girl into Persona5Royal, although she's an added character, not a main character choice. It doesn't look like they kept her in this game as an option. When it comes to the social system, you can play with it however you want, and at the end, there is a new game plus mode. When I used it in p3p, the player character keeps their levels and persona (and a few other important items), while the other characters started over from scratch... but anyways, you also get to keep your rizz so you can power through social links and be able to unlock and do all the other interactions you didn't have time to do before the end or just missed the right stats and time window.
The Charlie's Angels comparison was unexpected but I don't think you're completely off the mark. 😅
The protags are nameable so they don't bother promoting names, however all but the og have actual names. P3's is canonically Makoto Yuki, but in the manga he's Minato Arisato. And while romances have been optional since 4 so it's entirely up to the player, there are perks to doing so. You can unlock an achievement for romancing all the girls(easiest way is to do all of them in one playthrough) and extra parts for certain scenes.
Also, yes Neo Featherman Phoenix Rangers is a super sentai parody and each character is associated to one particular element, tho you can choose certain moves they get when leveling up
No, there's an achievement for romancing one party member, there is one for maxing all social links though
P1 protag does have oficial name tho it’s Naoya Toudou
These trailers are great little introductions to what the characters are like when you meet them in the game, but pretty much all of them go through really interesting arcs and character development. Junpei is probably my favourite of the playable characters.

All i will say is, yes, every party member specializes in a different element, and thanks to Persona 5 the Light and Dark elements now have actual attacking moves (previously they only had insta-kills and HP Halving moves), i could say what is the "role" and element of each character, but it's more fun when you figure it out

Alejandro Saab is such a flexible VA, like the top three roles I know him from, Yuri in Fire Emblem Three Houses, Osvald in Octopath Traveller 2 and now Akihiko here are all SO different, yet he pulls them off so well!
Think of SMT like the franchise like Final Fantasy, so they share similarities across games. Seeing you gush over the spell names was very endearing though LOL
my personal favourite fem character from p3 is definitely yukari! she didn’t catch my eye when i first met her, but she grew on me after i got to know her more. she’s a sweet girl and i love her development in-game. i like your theory/analysis on her personality from the trailer!

So the protagonist does have a canonical name (Makoto) but that’s only from the anime movies based off the og P3. His personality is completely up to the choices you make in dialogue but there’s also a “canonical” version as well based off the movies.

MC's canon name is Makoto Yuki, which was decided when the Persona 3 Movies came out, and it carried over into Persona 3 Dancing in Moonlight, tho for a while it was Minato Arisato (his name from the Manga). the ones from P4 and P5 also have their canon names (again, one from the Anime/Dancing games, and one from the Mangas)
Megaten and Persona has a defined template for spells yes. Think like how a cure-cura-curaga exists in all FF and KH games and spinoffs.

I am a massive Persona 5 fan, and have only ever played that game, so i an excited to jump into a new experience. I intend to romance either Yukari or Fuuka.

Persona shares a lot of its DNA with the general Megami Tensei series, the main character gets to choose his persona, and the list he gets to choose from are most of the demons from Megaten, as well as some lore overlap
I think it's like Pokemon where they all get EXP no matter what, just that the active members in battle get more.
P3 protag is also voiced by Yuri Lowenthal, so him screaming the Persona names would remind most people of his role as Ben 10 in Alien Force, Ultimate Alien and Omniverse.

You said before that you played SMT so Persona is a spin off of SMT but got more popular so it split to it's own thing cutting off the SMT in it's title, Use to be like "SMT Persona 3 or "SMT Persona 4" with the older PS2 games but it's just Persona now, And the demons in SMT are in this game but renamed to personas to fit the games and you can fuse them like in the SMT games and the spells from SMT are in the persona games

In terms of persona games. The overall opinion is that 3 has the best finale villain, 4 has the best antagonist, and 5 has the best crew to hang with.
on the protagonist, each game does mostly leave them up to you but for p3 he’s generally portrayed as an apathetic guy without much of a reaction to death at the beginning. for persona 3, i’d really recommend the japanese voices for as the characters feel like quite a few significantly deviate from the japanese voice’s characterisation in their dub voices (both in original english dub and in reload english dub). persona 5 matches the english voices much more closely to the japanese ones overall so in p5 pick whichever you prefer lol but for 3 it really does feel significant

@@aaron75fy Well, "right". Minato is his name in the manga and the japanese version of Persona Q, while in the movies, Dancing in Moonlight it's Makoto.
So ultimately it was just a cointoss which turned to be the canon name.

Yeah the thing about Persona is it started out as a spin off of Shin Megami Tensei, so they use the same magic skills as SMT.
While you can name the protagonist whatever you want, the Protagonist of each games usually have two official versions to it. The manga version and the anime version. Atlus usually goes with the anime name version as the "real" official name of the protagonist especially in the side releases. In this case the manga name for the Persona 3 protagonist is Minato Arisato and the anime name, which is the official one, is Makoto Yuki.

You’re going to feel right at home with Persona Combat, the press turn system is carried over from Nocturne and DDS and the Personas you use are the Demons from Nocturne.

Romance isn’t REQUIRED unless you are doing a 100% completion run. But social links are important in this game so you’ll constantly be forging relationships with people in and outside of your team.
Fyi. While in his trailer the Protag is simply called "Hero". There have already been 3 names used for him. The first name was his manga name, "Minato Arisato". The second one is the live action play name, "Sakuya Shiomi". The last one is the official name Atlus used for everything else which is "Makoto Yuki"
For the third name, you can even see the characters called him "Yuki-kun" in multiple trailers.
Btw, the “Hero”s Real Name is Makoto Yuki

Persona 3 Reload , Persona 5 Royal , Persona 4 Golden are the most accessible main line games since they got their Steam releases.
Of those games Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5 Royal are the darkest. Now i havent played P3 Reload yet (only the older P3 FES and P3 Portable) , but any of the 3 mentioned games on Steam are a good entry point.

Personas arent actually summons, although it seems like it. They are your magic skills actually. And no you cant ignore the social love aspect cause it will affect your heros attributes, abilities and personas avaialable.
I have a hard time picking a favorite out of the P3 lot (leaning towards Junpei/the class clown, Aigis/the robot and Mitsuru/the upperclass girl) but I'm honestly most looking forward to seeing how Reload does Yukari/pink archer, Fuuka/navigator and Shinjiro/mr 'lone wolf':
Yukari's stuff in the older games relied a fair amount on the game's presumed romance with the protag so seeing how they'll shift that has me very curious (no doubt it'll be an improvement; Yukari was great whenever we got a lot at her more serious side).
Fuuka honestly just needed more attention on her in general.
And Shinjiro... They did some *really* interesting stuff with him in Persona 3 Portable so I'm really curious if they've kept any of that for Reload (like, I doubt they made him a romance option again given it was gender locked to the girl MC in P3P but I can dream dang it! X'D)
Also very much looking forward to how they'll be treating a few non 'main cast' characters as well but we'll see how that goes when the game comes out
Ehh I think they focused on Yukari cuz they treated her like the female protagonist, and not a romantic option. She def is a romantic option, but i don’t think they’ve ever tried to force a specific romance over the other. The game sets up every girl to be natural as the chosen romance, and I’d argue Aigis felt more like set up as a partner (tho it’s never stated if it’s platonic or romantic) just like scarf boy.
I hear they’ve moved up Fuuka’s recruitment so maybe we will get more time with Ken and Shinji, since they needed more time in the oven (the movies did it well so the game could do the same).
@@ma.2089 Ah sorry, worded what I meant about Yukari poorly. What I meant was a lot of her old social link stuff tended to lean a bit more heavily on presumed romance as set up for it's events than most (such as Yukari bringing up her issues with family specifically because of how her romance with the MC makes her worry about being the same) and I really like getting more insight into Yukari -part of why I loved the Answer so much even if she was at her worst- so I'm eager to see how stuff might end up being changed a bit (would love love love if we end up seeing/hear a bit about her archery club stuff being used as a scene opener instead of a date for example =D).
So yeah! I'm looking forward to the little writing tweaks and such; they probably won't change too much in the end since the core of her social link is very solidly about her rather than romance but seeing the little shifts in writing and set up is absolute crack to me

Technically the protagonist or"hero" has two canonical names Makoto Yuki and Minato Arisato from the anime and manga respectively but he's called hero in the trailer because the player can name him pretty much anything same goes for the other games just the Persona 2 games as well as 4 (and maybe 1 I'm not sure) have 1 canonical name (also no Akihiko is not the P4 protagonist his name canonically is Yu Narukami but like the others you can name him pretty much whatever)
MegaTen in general shares some of the names and elements related with the lore but how they can be or are connected is long to explain so i spare you the details.

Just FYI the Male Protagonist's "canon name" is Makoto Yuki, its used in anime movies and games promotions, etc. And the Female Protagonist from P3P alternative timeline is Kotone Shiomi. They are the players avatars (nameable self-inserts) so you partially decide who they are, but also do have characteristics of "canon" personality in the way how they presented, some bits of backstory, dialogue options, promo's and transformative media like (for Makoto) official anime adaptations. They have a lot of nicknames too, few of which references original Persona Trilogy timelines.
So in a way its the usual familiar stuff if you are the mobage gacha and RPG player.
You can also give the Nickname to them yourself as well.

The Persona series is a spin-off of the Shin Megami Tensei series that why most skill/spell are similard.
As for a couple of fact the MC default name is Makoto Yuki(Yuki Makoto in Japan) and why Mitsuru is called the empress of execution well just don't make her mad.
If some of those caracther are similard to some in Persona 4 it might because of when you watch the trailer of the Arena games because it them but a bit older.
Compared to persona 1 and 2, 3 onwards definitely went with a brighter setting and less brutal difficulty curve, losing the SMT brand accordingly.
3 was the grimmest of the new series, though, and we'll see if they kept that tone in ReLoad

I cant talk about persona 1 and 2 but having played the other 3 i can tell you that 3 stands head and shoulders above the rest, not saying the other games are not great, they are great and worth playing, just that p3 is where its at if you want angst and dark themes with also the strongest roster of characters A very personal take obviously.

You mentioned you liked characters with angst, well P3 is as angsty as you're going to get.
The only thing i find VERY offputting, is the very "human" dog noises of Koromaru...
Instead of just finding some actual dog sounds, it's extremely noticeable to anyone who has ever heard a dog before, that it's just a voiceactor doing noises into a mic! It's very much in the uncanny valley for me...
Yeah I wasn't quite sure about it but I think cuz I noticed it was a VA making the sounds it kinda just made it funny to me lol they do some of them pretty well tho

To my knowledge, Alejandro is the only controversial pick among the new VAs. Some people suggested he should play Shinji instead but I think he does a good job as Akihiko (especially outside of combat) and if it means losing the amazing choice the made for Shinji, I'm fine with it
I’ve seen ppl complain about everyone in the cast to some extent. But Aki had it the most lol
@@ma.2089 Really? Aki's the only one I've seen. Everyone else at least seems pleased the other VAs are at least trying to imitate the original even if they're not happy with the change itself
6:43 This is what I love about Persona 3. I love how the characters dont need the Main Protagonist to actual go through their struggles. Its more realistic because they hide all struggles and trama and as you get to know them, they trust you more and they start to open up more to you. They seem like actual real people.
Not G thinking Akihiko is Persona 4's protagonist just because they both have grey hair
Every character (save for one nonplayable) in this game got recast from the original, and while all the new voices fit very well, Akihiko's is very off-putting to hear after the years we've heard Liam O'Brien voicing him. He just sounds too old to be... what, 17 or 18? The VA has done amazing work. I just think he was the wrong pick for Akihiko specifically

The reviews say P3R is really friendly to the newcomers now due to some new gameplay mechanics which (compered to the Original, FES or P3P) make difficulty not insanely hard or too much inconvenient, so its also a perfect game (just like P4G and P5R in some ways) to begin your Persona journey.

i watch all trailer review, they said the same about akihiko..., Its great voice by cyno but i really prefer old voice. But who knows the character will bit change in reload, maybe like we dont see his "childist" act about figthing shadows. (Not veteran p3, but a year old p3 fans)
lol to the cat bit. Common thing in Persona 3 and 4... a decent number of the girls are terrible at cooking. Fuuka being the case in this one. I... think two of the girls in four fit as well? Not sure. I've only played the crossover Q games, not 4 yet, though definitely want to from the various things I've looked up.

In 4, Chie, Yukiko and Rise are horrible cooks. Naoto is the only saving grace and its literally only because she actually reads the cook book

Yukari can actually cook(due her mom rarely at home) but she can mess up one time rarely
For mitsuru is justified as she never do cooking in her entire life but her cooking is expected of "normal people cook for the first time" more to normal range and not to the point beyond horrible
Aigis is a robot obviously so she doesn't need to cook but still like mitsuru is not horrible more like full nutrients
Fuuka is the PROBLEM , she tend to mix up something THAT not supposed in it, in Persona Q even shinjiro remark fuuka is the only one is the horrible cook. but don't worry fuuka does improve her cooking in the late game, even yukari remark her onigiri is good.
Honestly fuuka got better treatment that persona 4 girls (excerpt naoto) unlike them who their cooking doesn't get better, fuuka got better at time passed
