There is no one like her! The words, the emotions, the music, the voice. Having any one of those would be remarkable, but our Kate has the lot. Bless thee, lass, for the pureness and beauty of your songs!

Having researched my family history I've discovered a link to some of the children who died in the husker pit disaster...this song is a perfect tribute to their memory.

I wish i could put into words the profound grief this makes me feel. Kate manages to get more and more emotive with every new album--ever more able to turn the vast, incalculable pain of a war or tragedy into simple yet gut-wrenching lyrics and melody that will break your heart even as it helps you grieve. No other singer on earth has been able to do that to me as consistently as Kate.

Kate you nailed this with the writing and the delivery. This song makes my heart ache every time I hear it. how did we every let our children work the pits from the age of 4! it was just wrong, regardless of the time era!

Kate, what a treasured human you are. This is wonderful, stopped me in my tracks on my first listen.
Tears come often when your voice speaks to my soul....but this one....phew I'm reeling. Thankyou.

....after going to watch Kate Rusby at Oswaldtwistle Civic Theatre a few years ago , I went to see Joe Brown...the old 1950's rocker there shortly afterwards. ''Does anyone here like folk music ? ....no, me neeva - it's bleedin' miserable ain't it...all about dead dogs and miners and staff ?!'' Joe said , after I'd almost put my hand up !

    Halt the Wagons
    Stop now, halt the wagons
It's too much for me to bear
    To see my baby sleeping
    In the cart lying there
Oh, take me, Lord, and keep me
    Please don't leave me here
    For I cannot keep breathing
He was all I held dear
    Oh, hush now, don't cry
    As you hear my lullaby
    Hush now, don't cry
    As you hear my lullaby
From the Black Horse there was silence
As the storm raged up above
    So desperate was the tempest
To steal the one I love
    Oh, nature sick with vengeance
As we carve up her tongue
    Tiny arms around each other
    Her work here done
    Oh, hush now, don't cry
    As you hear my lullaby
    Hush now, don't cry
    As you hear my lullaby
    Children are the future
    And children are a gift
But these are children of the darkness
    With a twelve-hour shift
So take him, Lord, be gentle
    With his tired, weary bones
Now I'm a mother of the darkness
    For he'll never come home
Oh, we do not mine for riches
And we do not mine from love
But merely to keep the food on
    Our tables above
So I'll dry up my tears now
Keep his soul in my heart ...
    And call up the wagons
So the next shift can start
    Oh, hush now, don't cry
    As you hear my lullaby
    Hush now, don't cry
    As you hear my lullaby
    Please hear my lullaby
    Hear my lullaby
    Hear my lullaby
    Hear my lullaby
    Hear my lullaby

In my view there are two really outstanding contemporary British female singers. Adele has 28.9 million You Tube subscribers; Kate has 10 thousand! Wake up people, as the comments to this and pretty much each and every of Kate's songs testify, those of us fortunate enough to have "discovered" Kate are truly grateful to welcome her as a fixture into our lives.

I am coming late to Kate's music and have today received "Underneath The Stars" and "Philosophers, Poets and Kings" and have just listened to this the last track of the latter. I found this CZcams video and as mother to four and grandmother to eight I see my own grandchilren's faces in each and every child taking part and each child whose life was lost. Beautiul and poignant with Kate's haunting vocals and the purity of the children's voices make such an emotional impression. As all good folk music should be it gives us permission to reflect and to shed tears for events past and present.
