I think basketball also had its passing plays. But I think I never watched it frequently on NBA. I used to hear also a high school team implemented passing plays and they swept all games with clean record (zero L)

Just to address the point you made about them defending when the other team is passing in their own half. Think about it this way, if you win the ball there then you have less yards to reach the opposition goal, so its worth trying to win it in the oppositions half.
