Deep indeed. There are 122 official albums: 62 were released during Zappa's lifetime, 60 after 1993. That's not counting the 100s of bootlegs. You'll never run out of Zappa material.

This is just the Last part of the song...check out the studio version (which happens to also be live) from the album called Bongo Fury where he shreds literally from beginning to end and he doesn't have another guitarist on that one. I saw him on THAT tour playing THAT song with that band and it was awe inspiring. Frank was an absolute giant, may he RIP.

That's Adrian Belew playing the first guitar solo! He's also an amazing musician that went on to play with King Crimson in the early 80's through the early 2000's. Great guitarist.
Adrian Belew also has a large number of solo albums, plus his output with his own bands The Bears and the Adrian Belew Power Trio, all worth exploring. As is his work with David Bowie, Talking Heads, and King Crimson.

Frank's unique vocals and offbeat sense of humor were icing on his musically intricate and complex cake. He was well respected by his peers. Incredibly intelligent. He was to music what George Carlin was to comedy.

At age 13, I heard Zappa music for the first time on a cassette player in the car of a friend's brother. It was Muffin Man playing from album Bongo Fury. I still remember vividly this moment. I'm now 60 and Frank is my favorite composer/performer. He's a genius.
If this one gave you goosebumps you are in for a treat. Zappa is the gift that keeps on giving. Don't let the goofiness fool you. Dude was a legitimate musical genius in my opinion.
I listened to Zappa endlessly in the 70's. I don't even know where to tell you to start. So much good shit from him. Sad when he died. His son Dweezle continues his father's legacy. Tours as, Zappa does Zappa!
Zappa is a legend. He has so many versions of each song, it can be a little hit or miss finding the one you heard. City of tiny lights, don't eat the yellow snow, Dynamo hum, titties and beer, and cosmic debris are some of my favorites.

Frank put out more than 60 albums. He was prolific. He wasn't just a writer, he was a composer and conductor... and the most talented musicians of the era would compete to play in his band. You've hit the mother load! Frank's lyrics are witty, sarcastic, and playful... and although he was a very serious guy, he tried not to take himself too seriously in musical terms. You're about to be bombarded by all the Zappa fanatics who, I dare say, are even more zealous than Tool fanatics. They'll point you in the right direction. Enjoy the ride!

More than that. He had a large recording studio in his house, and he recorded everything. Rehearsals, auditions, writing sessions, outtakes, jams with friends, whatever; not to mention every live show he did. Not only that, but after the original Mothers of Invention broke up in the '60s he never signed another record contract. He always owned his own record companies and only did distribution deals with major labels. That means he owned every recording he made. There's probably enough stuff that his kids, grandkids, great grandkids, and maybe their kids as well will have new material to release, assuming anybody wants it.

I second the Inca Roads suggestion. Preferably the Token of his Extreme live version. That ('73-'74) band is legendary. Zappa at his best.
Most unique brilliant musician in my generation,( in my 70s now).
As rock fans we were lucky to get Zappa! He's a musical savant, that wrote symphonies but loved rock music. That's without the amazing lyrics that are absolutely hysterical at times, dark at times, sexual most of the time and extraordinary all the time. Take a deep breath first, then slowly explore Frank "Fuckin" Zappa. Absolutely one of a kind!
Franks music encompasses rock, jazz, soul, pop and more. It’s well worth the effort to read up about him and his music. Some regard him as a genius, l stand with them. “Lucille has messed my mind up” is definitely one of my favorites and something most don’t expect from him, enjoyed it, have a great day!😊🎸

Frank Zappa was lot of things. Very talented, very very hard working. But he was a composer top of the list, so when he solos, he has a lot of music knowledge at his fingertips. He released 3 whole albums of just guitar solos, called Shut Up an Play Your Guitar and similar. His songs were very structured but set up to have improvisation sections, and he always had a great band to go with him.

Look for "Frank Zappa teaches Steve Allen to play the bicycle". That was his first TV interview. It wasn't obvious then that he was going places, but he obviously went places. Legend.

I've NEVER seen another reaction channel go near his stuff lol.. especially with such an open mind. Zappa is... well, Zappa lol. He's legit one of the best guitarists who ever lived, as well as a composer and genuine musical genius. Not all his stuff is comprehensible to mere mortals like us lol, but a lot of it is, and it sounds like nothing else. Some other tracks you NEED to check out are: Dancing Shoes, Joe's Garage, Bobby Brown Goes Down, Valley Girls and the due of Dont Eat The Yellow Snow + Nanook Rubs It In (these must be listened as a pair). I saw Frank at least a dozen times starting in 1971. I never missed a concert when he toured. Without a doubt, every concert was memorable, and he never disappointed. His Halloween concerts were legendary.
There's a great documentary film about his life that came out a couple of years ago that feature mostly clips that have never been seen publicly. Very interesting guy. He was a perfectionist, so some people found him difficult to work with, but his band was always full of spectacular musicians. Steve Vai, who you may have heard by now on your musical journey, got his start transcribing music for Frank, who eventually let Vai join the band. So a lot of Steve's musical sensibilities were learned and honed by his time with Zappa.

Frank Zappa is one of the deepest rabbit holes you could ever go down. I have been listening to him since the early 70’s and today have well over 100 Zappa albums in my collection (and I’m missing a few). Good luck!! 👍
Zappa was an amazing, unique, one of a kind talent. Hard to believe that he’s gone almost 30 years. 🔥
He doesn’t just improvise solos, the music arrangements change from performance to performance. But yeah the other version’s solo is legendary. If you want a killer solo check out Zappa’s “sexual harassment in the workplace.” And yes, most of his material is comedy and satirical.
This is from Live at Palladium - HALLOWEEN (1977). If you dug this you need to watch the entire performance. Frank closed the show with a rendition of Black Napkins and Steve Via has commented that he never heard anyone play the guitar like Frank did in the piece, on that night. Coming from Via, that's saying something.
Zappa always had great musicians in his band: The Mothers of Invention. Zappa was at the forefront of Rock/Jazz fusion along with artists like Miles Davis. Miles approached the fusion from the Jazz perspective, Zappa more from the Rock perspective. Zapper was a genre onto himself. He was incredible and I was lucky enough to see him perform many times in person.
Polo is my favorite reaction platform. I've watched every Harry Mack with him and have learned a lot about the history of rap music. I have seen Zappa numerous times since I was 17 years old. I have recently seen the Zappa Band a few times as they play at the Baked Potato in Hollywood with the original 80's musicians. It is a small venue (bar) and the musicians are close and friendly. It is like listening to Zappa music in your living room- no kidding! They are amazing!!!!!! Thanks Polo for this reaction. I was wondering when you would get around to Zappa. Peace!~
Ship Ahoy is my favorite Zappa Solo. It is very hard to name A Frank Zappa track that is best. His catalog is enormous and straddles a number of genres. I have listened to Frank since I was about 15 years old. I once got to play bass with his son Dweezil for the song Apostrophe. 8 of the best minutes of my life

Frank was kind of the mad genius of rock. But to have played in his band gave you so much cred. It meant you were a stellar musician.
Adrian Belew, the first guitarist, is really good too. He ended up playing with Bowie, Talking Heads and King Crimson.
About hearing "the same solo every night", a Frank Zappa concert was always an experience. You never, never knew what you would get. Take this version of the Muffin Man: Two repeated chorouses, then just the main theme of the music devoted to just jamming. Frank didn't play his "hits" for a show - unless you were a deep, deep fan, most of the time you wouldn't even know what he was playing. You could only sit in wonder and amazement as Frank Zappa, and whoever he picked for that tour, and all were among the most accomplished musicians of the day, play whatever Frank felt like playing that night. A true genius, and the most overlooked guitar player in rock history.

If you ever saw the album cover from "Man From Utopia" , it has a caricature of Frank, as a muscle bound monster crushing his guitar neck while on stage, and reverse side shows a view from his back where he's actually a machine. If you want another great song, look for "Bamboozled by love" live, on the album "Tinsel Town Rebellion", where he has Ike Willis on Vocals, and Denny Walley doing some wicked slide guitar work as well.

Zappa is one of those amazing guitarists that makes me think of that line in Johnny B Good: "He could play the guitar just like ringing a bell." There seems to be no effort. He imagines a sound and the instrument makes it. So much experience and practice behind that.
There is a person on CZcams who has dozens of live recordings and he will cut out the solo of every version of a song like muffin man and turn it into a 60 minute guitar solo that is seamless and never gets boring because Zappa played it different every night

Polo, please check out 'Weasels Ripped My Flesh' ... a Frank Zappa and the Mothers album with both studio and live improvisations. Then, get a taste of 'Burnt Weenie Sandwich' the previous album. If you ever see Frank Zappa with a Gibson SG guitar on, fasten your seatbelt. The guy is a complete freaking genius. If you want to check more of him (and there's a lot and very different) I'd recommend "One size fits all", "Roxy & elsewhere", "Overnite sensation", "Apostrophe", "You can't do that on stage anymore vol. 2", "Absolutely free" and "We're only in it for the money".

I was introduced to Frank’s music by my dad. I was born in 66 and my pop was a huge fan of his and Captain Beefheart. I remember running around the house when I was a kid and lying down on our shag carpet in front of the speakers in our living room and hearing this song and so many others. Naturally, I grew to become a huge fan. Frank will never disappoint. His music is so profound but he never takes himself to seriously with lyrics. It was always so fun to try and figure out what he was talking about when I was a kid before I asked my dad what the lyrics meant. Let’s just say it was a bonding experience I’ll never forget. He was a musical genius. RIP Frank. I truly miss him.
The Comfortably Numb solo is undoubtedly amazing, but it's exactly the kind of thing Frank was talking about: something that was made up carefully in a studio over a long time, and not at a moment's notice. And the unprepared moment is the point where you spot the real talent.
I think perhaps, the unprepared moment is the point where you spot genius/virtuosity. I think talent qualifies as talent at some respectable bar lower than that set by FZ! David Gilmore is undeniably talented, improv or no.

If you want to hear Zappa's studio guitar work, one of his albums is "Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar", where he does exactly that. An extremely creative guy, with at least one track for everybody. And of course, like most great musicians, Weird Al parodied him with "Genius in France" which covers the whole of his style quite well.

The studio version was the very first I've heard from Frank Zappa. Compared to others, I couldn't believe how long the solo went for. Zappa became my absolute favourite artist. Listen to "shut up 'n play yer guitar" album. The 3 title pieces are incredible, and not only those!
So happy you love his music! He worked tirelessly on his music until the day he passed in 93. None of his solos were ever the same, he called his technique ’air sculpture’ and usually his solos would all go on for 7-8 mins. Zappa released a THREE album box set in the late seventies of just guitar solos called ‘shut up ‘n play yer guitar’ …it’s not for the faint hearted but a few amazing pieces on there you should check out man, like ‘soup ‘n old clothes’ …what an incredible solo! I first heard Frank in 1975 and went to every Halloween show in NYC for 6 years in a row. All the solos were different. Even from the early show to the late show they changed. My friend Warren Cucurillo studied guitar for years to get into Frank's band and was on Joe's Garage and others. Warren's song Thanks to Frank is amazing. He went on to Missing Persons and Duran Duran. Our love of FZ has lasted 50 years.

I love it when Joey sings along with Frank. (Joey Psychotic - body guard) Many years ago I got to see Frank 5 times in a week. LA, Santa Barbara, Berkeley, Sacramento and Reno. On the same song (Inca Roads) Frank did 5 different guitar solos. And they would rehearse a hundred songs so the 20 they play changes from night to night.
Dude, I have NO IDEA where you got the name "Joey Dynamo" from. That man's REAL name is John Smothers, AKA "Bald Head John" ( google it, hes done many a YT video) , featured in the studio album Joe's Garage, on the song "Dong Work for Yuda", and yes, he was Frank's bodyguard, hired after a jealous BF of a groupie pull him off of a stage in Europe and caused him serious injury, where he was wheelchair bound for his recovery.

Some artists drag you down a rabbit hole. Frank Zappa will pull you into a huge, complicated cavern. With 61+ albums and everything from doo wop to straight up experimental fusion, you'll find much more to enjoy. I'd recommend a "story" song like "Dinah Moe Hum" or, for complexity and a killer guitar solo, try "Inca Roads".

Zappa was one of the strangest performers that I have ever seen, and I've seen a lot. Love his guitar skills.
Looks like you uploaded this on valentines day, earlier this year. Picked a great day to fall in love with Frank Zappa. No doubt, he's a musical genius, but he was brilliant, just in general. He had a way of looking at things, and could wrap those thoughts up in a way that communicated a lot more than just the words he used to express the ideas. Like a parent asking their kid if they've done their homework, only without the power dynamic, or the conditioning of a shared history. There's some sage words he dropped, on all kinds of things, that kinda incidentally hits basic core realities of right and wrong, or just being a person in a world filled with other people. I'm not even talking about things he wrote down to be read by other people. Just right off the cuff, no matter what he was talking about, he'd drop some timeless little summary of a bigger picture that transcended the specific context, as a throw away statement, without any intentions of appearing profound, it was just how he saw the thing.
02:56 The big guy who comes to the microphone was Frank's bodyguard. Frank got pushed off a stage in 1971 by a "fan," and landed on the concrete floor of the orchestra pit. Broke his legs and crushed his larynx. That's why he can sing that super low voice in this song. So, "Bald-headed John" was there to make sure that never happened again.
Zappa is truly a musical genius. He is a composer and director. He demands excellence from every band member and he did not tolerate drugs and alcohol. He is super intelligent while incredibly zany at the same time. I suggest Frank Zappa - Inca Roads (A Token Of His Extreme) and you will get a bonus of the most talented claymation work every produced for a small portion of the video.(most likely enhanced by LSD)
