  • Do you have a brand new Hawkins pressure cooker that you want to test out for the first time? Or maybe you have an older one that's been gathering dust and you want to make sure it's still in good working condition. In this video I'll show you how to do an easy step-by-step test run on your Hawkins pressure cooker and put your mind at ease. Doing a trial run is a really good idea if you're new to pressure cooking so you can become familiar with the process of using your new cooker BEFORE you try it with food. And if you already know how to use one but your cooker has been gathering dust for awhile you can use this video to make sure it's still in good shape.

    Hah…I had a Futura model then bought one of these and the difference in the heating took me by surprise. When I read about a whistle, I expected an actual whistle. When I experience this whistle it totally freaked me out and I mistakenly thought it was about to go over pressure. Your video cleared up all my confusion so thanks.

    When the pressure regulator whistles, no further heat is requires. Just turn off the heat and allow it cook until pressure is equalized. Whatever you may be cooking, it's done for sure when pressure is equalized and you can open the lid.

    Hi quick question, Every other kind of pressure cooker i have owned recommends a 10-15 minuet venting before adding the rocker/weight. is this the same case or can we just add the weight as you say, as soon as its producing a constant stream of heat and steam from the top. Thank you very much if you reply to this!

    • @marykayriley
      @marykayriley  Před rokem +1

      Hi, i got my instructions for this procedure straight from the Hawkins website so if you're using other brands of cookers i can't necessarily vouch for them as they might work differently, i can't tell from your message if you're using Hawkins or another brand.. But it seems to me that the point of waiting to add the weight is to wait long enough for the water to be boiling and producing steam which happens pretty quickly usually in about 4 or 5 minutes. So once it's reached boiling point i can't see the point of waiting any longer. If the water is boiling then it's boiling right?

      @@marykayriley Oh im so sorry what i meant to say was i am using a hawking's big boy 22l and its basically just a suited up bigger version of your model in the video :D I just know that the USDA recommends that all types of pressure canners must be vented 10 minutes before they are pressurized aha

    • @doma7956
      @doma7956 Před 11 měsíci

      @thomasbriscoe2357 that depends if you're canning vs cooking. The lady in the video is giving instructions for a pressure cooker, but to can you need to vent because you want 121 Celsius internal temperature which is achieved with fully saturated steam inside with no air. Tldr: if you're canning, vent, if not, dint bother.

    How long do you leave it turned on? When do you turn it off to let cook?

    • @marykayriley
      @marykayriley  Před dnem

      @@lynnpadero9791 it depends on whether the recipe you're following calls for a gradual release of pressure or instant release. If the recipe indicates to turn off the heat and let the pot depressurize on its own (so you do not lift the pressure regulator to release pot pressure at the end of cooking), that is gradual or natural release. If the recipe or instructions you're following indicate to keep the pot cooking for a certain amount of time and then lift the pressure regulator to release the pots pressure that is instant release. Leaving the pot to depressurize naturally will keep the food cooking longer so you need to know which is indicated for the food you're cooking in order to neither over or under cook your food. Hope that helps.

    What is the problem of letting the stickers there ?

    • @marykayriley
      @marykayriley  Před 11 měsíci

      I don't think there would be any major consequences of leaving the stickers intact, I know many people leave them on. Other than the aesthetics and maybe a little baked on glue residue. It simply advises to remove them on the Hawkins website, so that's what I recommend too
