  • A local customer dropped off a Technics RS-TR232 Tape Deck to be checked out. I found the identical issue with both decks, missing teeth on the drive gears. I did find replacement gears available on line (eBay) this is part 2 Installing the replacement gears.

I have this exact same deck. The gear failed about 7 or 8 years ago. At that time, there did not seem to be any replacements available, at least not that I could find.. Now that there are, I need to pull it out of the shed and repair it.

Nice detail. Sure could use a primer on the azimuth adjustment process.

It would be even greatest if the azimuth was aligned with a reference tape and DSO. I have tried so many times that I don't believe others can possess this supernatural ability. You can't collimate the waveform phase by ear and you can't even pick the right wave.
It's going to pay off if you do... most of the recorded cassettes will fall within the range of acceptable hf reproduction even when they're not precisely aligned.

thanks. Nice repair. GWS. Do u have the link for the gears? Also can regular WD40 be used to lube the gears?

I discourage the use of regular WD-40 on any vintage electronics or mechanics as it leaves an oily residue; instead I recommend approved control cleaners and lubricants specially designed for such purposes.

There's an incredibly recurring pattern among Technics users to spray drench their mechanisms when they don't work anymore... it's GEARS guys! Then I have to spend most of my time cleaning the transport gears and stuff... it also makes reels slip out of their retention pegs and rub against the photo detectors, the signal gets jammed and the transport will stop working.
