    Look at Kiwi Grip for a deck coating. I used it on my boat and it worked very well. It's easy to apply, fills in imperfections, and leaves a very non-skid surface. I wouldn't use it over something that has a nice non-skid pattern but if you want to hide imperfections it does the job.

    Great video as usual. If you get a minute take a look at two of the Festool sanders, RS 2 and the RO models, especially the RO 150. Sanding glass with them can be almost dustless. Not sure if they will work for you, but you can try them for 30 days no strings attached...

    Andy, Thank you so much. Great Video as usual and very good timing given the deck work I am in the middle of. It is interesting to see that the heat makes the fairing thinner. I will keep that in mind. I am curious why you chose epoxy for the fairing coat rather than using polyester if that is what you used on the rest of the repair? Curious minds want to know as I step into the same tasks.

    Andy, great video! Although not a how-to (but for that you have other videos in your channel) it is great to see your process and how fast you work! :) One question: why alternate 1708 and CSM? When I need to build thickness fast I use a heavier version of the common 1708, its the same 17oz biaxial but the mat in the back is 24oz per square yard. Let me tell you, you need a good pair of scissors to cut this stuff!

    I was going to reseal the foredeck hatch on my boat, but discovered my deck desperately needs a core replacement (ouch!). I've been loving your videos!
    Also, any tips on a building up fiberglass on a complicated geometry? Where the deck meets the hatch, it is raised about 3/4". I was just going to lay some new marine-grade plywood as a frame around the old area and then lay some chop-strand over that for the initial layer, but I'm a bit lost on what other glass fiber I should be using. Also, should I cut squares of material (with a square cut out of the middle for the hatch) or should I just do strips? I'm most worried about shaping the corners.

    Great video as always! I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but it looked from the edit like you were laying all 7 layers one after another (no cure time in between). Is that true, or were you giving it a few hours in between?
    Also, I assume you were using a laminating resin. Did you spray them with PVA before going over with the epoxy filler, or was it the epoxy filler that allowed the first coats to fully cure?

When I opened it, it was cloth, it was black, but it was a miniskirt! You just don't get that when you buy locally. Lol. Small tip when sanding fiberglass: have a spray bottle handy filled with 3/4 water and 1/4denatured alcohol or cleaning vinegar (half and half works even better) and e few drops of dish soap. Very lightly wetting/misting the surface just to hold down most of the dust. Don't overdo! You will know by the speed of clogging your belt. When done carefully it clogs not much (usually less)faster than at normal use. If you make a slurry. Stop, wipe down surface, use compressed air to clean sanding belt. And continue. A shorter hose on the sander to the shop vac also helps allot. Keeps extraction at highest efficiency and it saves the vac engine working overtime. We would zipty the vacuum hose derictly Infront of the sander, tape shut the extraction port and drag not push the sander, works fast like, a treat. Even though this was on fiberglass carbodies and plugs, techniques are very very similar. Greeting from the Netherlands.

    Was the mat and 1708 laid with epoxy also, or polyester? Did the 1708 you used also have a mat layer attached? Wondering why you added layers of just mat? Also, any thoughts on alternating 1708 layers with 1808 layers, to have the strands running on the 90s and 45 degree angles, instead of just the 1708's 45s? I've watched literally all your videos. Excellent job. I'm doing everything as you do, use the same materials, as well as tools. I do have a question though.
    im restoring a 71 cobia cuddy cabin. I'm fairing out the imperfections now and hopefully can get it painted this weekend. I'm actually having it painted as you would a car (friend owns a paint shop and is doing it for free)- he's going to primer then paint it. Will the tiny pits be filled with the primer, or should I continue with the epoxy and the 410 (whatever it was you used in a previous video) and fill the pits and sand them out with my DA sander?

    • @boatworkstoday
      @boatworkstoday  Před 7 lety +2

      My typical process is to fare and prime. There will be pin-holes. Go back over those with an epoxy based filler (fill everything you see!). Prime again and repeat this process until it's perfect. Then shoot another primer coat to seal the filler, wetsand with 800 and shoot the topcoats :-) Can be a hassle, but the end result will be rewarded! Hope this helps!

    • @LeicaLouie
      @LeicaLouie Před 7 lety

      Kevin Keith Sometimes the pinholes are so small that the filler (resin + 410 or similar) won't fill them. For those, the only filler I've been able to use successfully is 3M spot putty (or similar name) it's a green filler that comes in a thoothpaste like tube and is very fine. The only drawback is that it is a 1K filler and acetone will remove it if you wipe the surface with it. Seal it with an epoxy primer and you're good.
