I also wanted a really short hairstyle. The hairdresser said she felt Bad for my hair, meanwhile I was in the chair physically unable to fight through washing my hair. After that I've cut my own hair every time I wanted something new. It is so refreshing and it's nice to know that even if I mess it up I've tried doing something new and learned a skill.

Same, I just got tired of no one listening or coming out with hair I hated. I started cutting it myself and I've made plenty of mistakes, but they were MY mistakes. I'm no hairdresser, but I'm happy at the end of the day knowing the decision was all mine.

I've had similar experiences and have been cutting my own hair for years now. I had long hair on top and shaved around as a teen, decided to grow it out, asked the hairdresser just to trim it up and make it even with the sides so I can grow it easier. She refused saying I'll look like I had a buzz cut. Ended up with an ugly not quite pixie that was not easy to grow out. And the woman who shaved my sides and back before almost didn't do it because "your hair is just so pretty" Ma'am it's thick and heavy 😭
I refuse to pay for an overpriced, unwanted, and typically uncomfortable haircut. If I mess up, it's on me and I can use the saved money for a treat.

I have type 3b curls and they are beautiful if I do say so myself, but I needed a trim desperately so I want in to get like 5 inches off, and this stylist said “Omg your hair is gorgeous! Why do you want to cut it? I’d kill for your hair.” And then told my mom she REFUSES to cut my hair and a stylist with an afro stepped in, cut my hair, and said sorry that her co worker was being so rude to a customer.

It’s gotten even curlier since I take better care of my hair, so I don’t go as short as I did before.

My father refused to let me dye my blonde hair black. One night after everyone went to sleep I dyed it black. It looked great! Next morning my dad flips out and drags me to a salon, telling her that I didn't have permission to dye it black and demanding that the stylist bleach it blonde again. The stylist looked at a very upset and humiliated me and said 'I can't bleach it and no one should try because she used permanent dye, it will likely make all her hair break and fall off'. Later I learned that this probably wasn't true, and I realized she only said that to save me from being blonde again and stop my dad from controlling my appearance. I was so grateful.
And wouldn't you know, my blonde roots never seemed to grow in! My dad was furious about it but here I am 10 years later with jet black hair that looks so much better than the blonde ever did, and I've gone no contact with my dad (for many reasons, not just my hair). The same happened to me. The hairdresser even asked my Mom if she was okay with it, and my mom gave her the okay. We ended up leaving with an exact copy of "coconut heads" hair cut (Ned's declassified school servival guide). I loved it, but my mom secretly hated it, so she sent me back. Hairdresser with colorful hair finally gave me the correct haircut, and I looked amazing.
The worst part is the haircut took forever because the first hairdresser kept cutting little by little, asking if it was short enough as if trying to make me regret my choice
To clear things up, I told the woman I wanted a pixie cut and showed them a picture of Kaley Cuoco since she inspired me to cut it cause I thought she looked so beautiful with short hair.
I kept telling the hairdresser I wanted short hair and my mom did also even my dad came up and told her He was okay with me getting a Pixie cut. We left with a bowl cut because she had taken so long the store was starting to close.

no... that's a sign of a good hair dresser. she was trying to be courteous since once you chop it off you cant get that length back, so she went little by little so that she could make sure you leave with a cut you're perfectly satisfied with. she's not a mind reader, i assure you she didnt know the exact length you desired, it's impossible for her to read your mind no matter how many reference pics shes shown 😭 see what i mean?

    • @Mmannk

@@atlas8912no? If i say i want my hair shaved on the sides with two inches on top (idk what haircut they wanted) and i show them a picture of the exact haircut i want, I genuinely don’t think anyone sane who listens to the customers request should give you a coconut head bowl cut. That’s stupid. The kid came in clearly set on what they wanted (short and in the style they described) so making sure they wanted it by giving them a longer haircut isn’t “courteous”, it’s rude and a waste of time. I understand if you think it’s a punishment haircut and refusing but that wasn’t the case and sounds clear from the way they commented. I’ve had a similar experience as an adult. After several months of covid, my hair which is always short actually grew out to near my shoulders. I asked for a fade and showed reference pictures and told the hair dresser i always have it short but it grew out during covid and she had the audacity to tell me i was lying. She cut my hair to what i can only describe as the ysolda breton haircut from skyrim. I thought she was cutting off some length before buzzing since my hair was kind of long at that point, and next i knew she was asking me how i liked it. I was very baffled by the fact i asked her for a short buzzed fade (i even used the word “masculine haircut”) and she didn’t even pull out the clippers. How is that courteous? If i don’t like the haircut that i chose, that’s on me. The hairdresser isnt supposed to ensure you like it, they’re supposed to ensure the best quality of the cut requested. In a perfect world they’ll like it but sometimes you end up realising a haircut doesn’t look as good on you as it did in theory. It’ll grow out. Maybe a “are you sure?” would suffice, rather than sell a product the customer didn’t request.

When I turned 16, my parents took me to a hair salon in LA to get a pixie cut and dyed hair for the first time. I always had longish brunette hair.
When I told the stylist what I wanted and showed reference pictures, she told me she wouldn’t bleach my hair because it was virgin hair. And she said a pixie cut wouldn’t work for me because I had a round face and looked ‘low maintenance’.
So instead, she gave me a shoulder length bob and dark raspberry hair (not bleached, and I wanted violet)
I literally cried my eyes out when I got home because I’d been looking forward to this haircut for months and was really excited that I’d recently developed a personal style.
My ED was in full swing at that time, and being denied my favorite hairstyle over a ‘round face’ ruined me for a long time.
I still have a hard time trusting hair stylists and just do my hair at home. I only go to a salon if I fuck up my own hair really badly and I can’t fix it.

I was fuming and went home and used my husband's clippers and now I cut my own hair. It's so freeing

I had a stubborn hairdresser the first time i got a haircut, i came in with very specific pic of an assymetrical bob and the hairdresser just refused to do it the way i wanted because "this will look choppy and too masculine on you" so she gave me a symmetrical bob way longer than i asked that made me look like a girl
So we went back like an hour later when my hair dried (she dreeencheddd my hair with the spray bottle and didnt dry it at all) and got it fixed the way i wanted with a new person and they didnt charge us cos i was still crying about it
Now i just cut my hair at home.
Like we're paying anyway just cut my hair, if i dont like it ill cry about it later anyway

I'm gonna give y'all the best advice i wish I'd gotten earlier: FUCK salons for really short cuts. I say this with all the love in my heart for the many MANY wonderful hair stylists working at salons. Just go to a barber!!! They're usually p cheap (20-30 send to be the average) and they'll do a GOOD JOB. Like, even as they're hesitant because they're like, oh no i don't know how to cut "women's hair" like just be like I'm literally here getting a "men's cut" i believe in u lmao and like. They'll do SO GOOD. I literally spent years going to salons to maintain a cut my sister in law gave me. EVERY TIME i went in i complained that the cut war crooked but they'd always just maintain that mild crookedness, literally like 8 years i went through this, even going to a couple like. Fairly expensive salons. And the result was always like...fine? Like whatever, luckily i knew to be like "just take me down to a 1" and assure them i'd done it before and they'd do as asked (helps that I'm an adult too lmao).
Just this year though i finally went to a real barber, finally got over that like nervousness of going somewhere unfamiliar, and Y'ALL. He fuckin MATHED my hair, like he even explained he was just like, oh yeah i just gotta measure it out. And like, he got me growing out a couple sections so it looks a lil funky but y'all, it's SO GOOD. And he did this lil fade??? And it looks SO good. Go to a barber y'all!!!! It might be a lil weird but it'll be fine and you'll be so happy and they'll shave your head good!!!!!

Hair dressers can be fucking annoying about giving short hair to people they perceive as women.
Heres my story about that shit for context i am a transman but am perceived socially as a women
Last year i shaved my head but my hair grows really quickly so soon i needed a haircut
My boyfriend needed a haircut too and so we decided to get haircuts together using his hairdresser
When i get my hair done she shaves it a 3 on the sides and im like could you do a one on the side?
    And she actually refused?
She did a 2 instead and was like the 1 is going to be sooo short on you
My boyfriend gets his hair cut she says to him
"So just rhe usual? 1 on the sides?"
AAND USES A 1 TO SHAVE THE SIDES OF HIS HAIR I WANTED TO SCREAM OMFG
The next time i actually just made my boyfriend tell her to use a 1 on the sides for me beacuse she reufsed to listen to me and guess what happened when a cis man asked on my behalf... i got the haircut :/
Him and i were both very annoyed by this interaction and it was so clearly sexism and it was disheartening seeing as the hairdresser was a women who also frequently tslked about being cool and how she had mullets and dyes her hair fun colours and just trying to be this fun person whilst still perpetuating gender stereotypes on me. So disappointing.
Its sad how dispite me being the only person in that room who had shaved my head i was also the only person not trusted to have agency over my hair and whether it was shaved. So disaapointing.

My mom freaked a bit but at the end of the day she let us do our thing. I started bix dying my hair around 11. By 13 it was blonde with pink streaks. And this was the late 90s, so i definitely got stares and even got sent to the principals office over it. My mom defended me, "there isn't anything about hair color in the dress code so how dare you call me in here over something like this" type thing. Then they added "no bright hair colors" ...so i dyed it brown, which turned the pink to purple. Not bright! Then I did emerald green, and eventually blue black. 😅

for the longest time since I was little every time I went to get my haircut. I always wanted it really short like pixie cut length, but the hairdressers would always say “oh your hair is curly is will curl up to the length you want”. My hair is not curly, it’s that weird in between of wavy and curly. Needless to say it never curled up and it was always chin length 💀
Edit: or one time I wanted my hair really short the lady refused to buzz the back because she didn’t want to have to make another appointment for me to keep up the trim 💀 like hello? I would probably grow it out anyway but why is it up to you that I make another appointment???

I only wanted half. I still ended up bleaching half. I wanted black and blonde hair. Ended up with purple hair. My hair was too dark to have the blonde I wanted and she said if we dyed if purple it would fade and balance the blonde. When it faded it was gray. The lady point-blank refused, after a lot of effort on my part I ended up with something like a bowl cut, but shorter in the back 🤢 and even when I did successfully get it shorter, it took me several appointments to convince them to use a buzzer on my head at all. The next Saturday we went to the salon. My daughter asked the hairdresser if she can dye her blonde? When the hairdresser said she can't do that. My daughter was very disappointed and confused.
She came to the waiting area to ask if I could get the hairstylist to dye her hair blonde. I told her no she is 15 and she can deal with it herself by changing one word. It took her four months to get over me not helping her to dye her hair blonde.😂
She figured it out by watching a episode of American housewife. When the oldest daughter went blonde and the mom said I can't believe you BLEACH your beautiful brown hair.😂😂

I would have cried if my daughter went from that super long hair to a shaved head too. But at that age, you’ve just got to let them do what they wanna do with their hair. They’re definitely old enough.

i asked for short hair and the lady cutting it was hesitant at first, and apparently its because usually when girls say short, they will get upset if its TOO short. so they make it longer than u say regardless to play it safe bc they think youll regret it afterwards? but i told her nah i want it all gone like 3 times and she was like say less

My Mom used to forcibly dye my hair so I looked more like my half siblings. That experience really scared me as a mixed race kid. Now I have no emotional attachment to my hair and I have to develop strong relationships with hair dressers to be able to ask for what I want. Shout out to my current one for being so kind and understanding.

I'm a trans man. I was 24 when I did the big chop. I'd been researching the best way to ask for it. I wrote down exactly which guard numbers I wanted on my head. I specifically said "I want a masculine haircut" and "may I cut off the ponytails myself please?" Which I think convinced her I meant business. She didn't let me touch her scissors though, so I didn't do the chop myself.
I'd bothered to do the research because I'd said "I want it short" before and left with a bob that, while absolutely adorable and flattering, made my suicidality worse.
I didn't tell my parents I was going to do it. My spawn point had a tantrum for the rest of the day, and then had a stick up her ass about it for another couple months.
They don't know I'm trans, for obvious reasons. My spawn point freaked out about a measley haircut, I certainly wasn't going to tell her I'm on testosterone. She got her dress up dolly for 24 years. I was suicidal for 12 of them. Her dolly was going to die either way- I just chose not to rot in the ground.

Dude when I wanted to cut my really long hair the lady refused to do it too! I grew it out to donate it. And she said no I would regret having a pixie
And I told her I had a pixie before it's only this long to donate and she literally cut off a few inches asking if I liked this length first because it was so much cuter for my beautiful hair. My jaw dropped because it made the hair to short to donate and I know she knew that. I made her cut it to my shoulders and had to go to another hairdresser to get a pixie because she refused to fix it.

Apparently hairdressers everywhere are difficult. I wanted my hair ≈5mm on the side and ≈7mm on top because summer was coming and my hair feels like it forms a closed surface trapping heat better than any isolation in existence. I’ve argued with three different hairdressers that all wanted to convince me to leave my hair longer. I then bought an electric razor and cut my hair to the length I wanted it to be, which I still do

Her honest reaction was “that’s a shame you could have gotten £200 for each braid since you have such healthy hair” my 11 year old self was so tempted so thank god we’d already got the envelope because I was like “no I’m already ready to post it to them and they know it’s coming”. Whenever I’d grow my hair out when I was younger, I’d end up cutting off like 10 inches of it to donate. When did it when I was 13 though, I decided I wanted a super short, boyish cut with an undercut. It was a big change, but I had wanted to cut my hair for a long time since it had been making me uncomfortable. Anyway, my stylist leaves it like 3 inches longer than I wanted with a weird round bob thing because she “didn’t want me to regret it “. Needless to say, I went back a couple weeks later to get the actual cut I wanted from a different stylist. I totally agree that stylists are allowed to offer their professional opinion and consultations, but at the end of the day I’m paying for the service and it’s my hair not yours.

I had a bob for the longest time, but I’ve always wanted a side shave with it long in the front. Two years ago, we went and got a pixie cut. Around 3months ago, I grabbed an electric razor and some scissors, trimmed the sides to about an inch, and then shaved the rest off. We then went to get it dyed. Now I have the cool ass hair I always wanted. Shaved sides, around an inch in the back, and chin length purple waves in the front!

People were so obsessed with my “beauty” telling me how I can look prettier and what size my body looks best at. So I shaved my head and everyone who was there for me eventually left. And it was all because I let go of caring to be beautiful and actually live my damn life rather than trying to be beautiful!! Materialistic people no mas in my life 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

The change was so drastic the hairdresser i chose came in on her off day to do my hair. It came out more of a carebear pink and it reigns as one of my favorite hairstyles of all time. When it faded i had streaks of pink with the blonde i called it my sunset hair 😊

One time I went to a hairdresser and showed her a picture of this really fluffy, androgynous hairstyle and she told me it was “just a styled pixie cut” (it very obviously wasn’t) and then gave me a pixie cut, no styling, and didn’t show me how to get it anywhere remotely close to the picture I showed her. I almost cried when I got home cause I hated it to much. Never went back there and now I go to a lady that actually listens to what I want and communicates with me to make sure she’s getting it right
