      I agree she is special.
Strictly speaking, she is not a concert pianist.
In her high school she majored in piano.
She enrolled in a university of education with the aim of becoming a music teacher, but she realized she wasn't interested in teachers and started banding.
She said in an interview with the following magazine.

This song was inspired by two pieces Chopin's "Revolutionary Etude" and Dvorak's "New World Symphony".
They were some of Miyako's favorite pieces to play so she combined elements from both pieces while writing Swan Song. The lyrics were added by Asami because she had a background in ballet and the music reminded her of a ballet.

    LOVEBITES - Swan Song lyrics:
If this was the last day you could live on this earth
World you still go on, accusing someone for today
It’s better to fail than not do anything at all
It is not the length, but depth of life that counts
    Oh brave soldier
    Oh gallant warrior
Valor to those who died in battle to Valhalla
    Believe what’s in your soul
For death will come to all
You shall rest peacefully in God’s Heaven
    Floating lotus
    You are so graceful
    Saintly and glorious
    Till the end of time
    Floating lotus
    You are so beautiful
    Sing me your sweet song
    The legend of the swan
If you’ve never hoped, you’ve never been though despair
Ignorance is bliss, it’s easier to not care
You might think it’s meaningless to sacrifice a life
Sometimes the life of one can save so many more
    Oh brave soldier
    Oh gallant warrior
Valor to those who died in battle to Valhalla
    Believe what’s in your soul
For death will come to all
You shall rest peacefully in God’s Heaven
    Floating lotus
    You are so graceful
    Saintly and glorious
    Till the end of time
    Floating lotus
    You are so beautiful
    Sing me your sweet song
    The legend of the swan
    Floating lotus
    You are so graceful
    Saintly and glorious

  • @JFrancoDrums
    @JFrancoDrums Před 3 lety +32

Hey David! You are spot on, this song is inspired by Chopin, in fact the intro to this song that is sadly missing from this video, is a Chopin piece that she played seconds before the song starts.
One thing i have to correct is that she hasn't been playing for couple years. She started playing piano at age 3 and she picked up the guitar at age 18. Miyako just had her birthday few weeks ago and she is 29/30 years old, not sure, so she has been playing piano for about 27 years and guitar for about 12, just wanted to clear that up!
Miyako is heavily inspired by many classical composers like Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Dvorak not only in her piano parts but also in her guitar solos and riffs.
9.3 is a great score once again, i understand there wasn't much showmanship but this one is a sad song, in the end the piano part represents the death of the Swan.
These two guitarists Miyako and Midori really are something else. In their older live videos you can pick up small mistakes here and there, but in this newer stuff they just keep getting better and better. And to think this band has only been around for a little over 4 years. And they have already released 3 full albums and 4 EP's in that short amount of time!
I suggest you do "The Awakening/The Hammer of Wrath" i highly suggest that version, "The Awakening" is an intro, it was uploaded by Олег Шастов. I will try to post the link below.
Another very enjoyable review/commentary, thank you David!

She was performing their own version of "Swan lake"..

Re. Swan Song: Miyako (remember that MIY-a-ko) who composes most of their music, is a concert-level classical pianist. She particularly likes the Romantic Era classical composers like Debussy, Dvořák, Chopin and Rachmaninoff. She composed Swan Song using elements of the New World Symphony (Dvořák) and Chopin’s Revolutionary Etude. She was on track for a career in classical music when she picked up a guitar for the first time and got hooked.
As others have alluded to, there is a better clip of this, featuring her playing the Etude as a prelude to Swan Song, but it keeps getting taken down and put back up. Final note--all five members of the band are Jedi-level musicians, but I think Miyako is a once-in-a generation talent, a true savant.
Oh, I get your wanting to be rigorous on scores and avoid grade inflation, but you have given 9.3's to other Lovebites songs, and I think this is edging up in to 9.6+ territory. Simple benchmark: What other metal or rock band in the world could pull off that piano outro without bringing on a guest musician?

    From france: Dear David Heretic,
I discovered your channel thanks to Lovebites whose career I have been following on CZcams for some time.
I love your way of reacting, your expressions come straight from the heart and the relevance of your remarks and words allow me to learn more musically about this extraordinary group.
If I like all the musicians, their songs, their stage performance, there is one that, according to my taste, surpasses them because her guitar playing has its roots in the deepest rock blues, it's Midori (blonde hair, blue guitar). I know it's not good at my age because she is very young, but I fell in love with it, with her devastating smile. 😀 😀
See you soon for another Lovebites reaction (and I won't tell you what their name means in French slang!).
    [Cher David Heretic,

    @satomiwa Před 3 lety +14

That's a shame. There's a piano intro to this performance (Chopin). The guitar solo directly references the intro. I see as I type this that Maurice Fabry already posted the link to the full version. Definitely worth it.
Also - when you got excited about the key change, and then listened for a bit and thought, no that wasn't a key change...I've always heard the key change, so I went back and listened to the chorus from early on and the one from after the solo, and you were right, there's no key change, but that's kind of amazing, because I could swear that was a key change. They tricked me. Not sure how, but some sort of Lovebites trickery in play to make you think key change where there isn't one. Songwriting skill, I guess.

The chorus melody is based on a theme in Dvořák's New World symphony, 4th movement. The chord sequence in Miyako's guitar solo echoes the Chopin Revolutionary Étude. Not sure if the piano music at the end is adapted from a classical piece. Some of Chopin's Études have that rising and falling pattern that you described.

You got it Dave. Well done .Miyako built this whole song around Chopiin prelude 13 , i think . It is a pity you missed the version with Miyako doing a part of the Chopin preulude as the intro , then thw whole arrangement makes sense. The singer suggested the choir type part in tribute to Swan Lake , hence all her Swan like ballet arm movements . I dont know another band on the planet, who could pull all this off even with a guest player added . I think this composition, arranement and guitar playing, cement Miyako's as GENIUS ! And about her presence on stage with the audience, I think you are maybe too demanding haha, it is on a whole concert that you have to check that point, not just on one song because it would not be representative of her whole way to be on stage, and so it would be unfair that they don't get at least 9.4 just because of that haha! The vocalist has a very good voice. BTW, I'm sure others have mentined this - Miyako (guitarist stage left) started learning to play the guitar at eighteen. She is now thirty-one. No I legit came up with it after some thought. Sometimes a smile when the answer is right there on the tip of my tongue....either that or I get really pissed. I thought about it and then Chopin entered my mind and I smiled at first and I was like "Nah, that can't be who it sounds like". then I thought about it a little more and I was like "no wait....maybe....maaaaaaybeeeee.....YUP that's who I'm thinking of". I'm just mad because it took me too long to think of it, I should have known right away....I'm getting old I guess.

Yeah mate Miyako is great. She mentioned when she been asked about the Midori the other guitarist how they start to play in the beginning, Miyako just said when the first time we start to play we just started feeling each other, the chemistry come straight. Same happens with the other band members too. So in this case I want to recommend the song We the United ( the song is the last song from that concert Five of a kind in Zepp Diversity Tokyo 2020) which was uploaded couple of days ago, and i think you gonna like it too. There when the solo part comes........ I'm gonna stop right here. So i really want to see your reaction. Once again thanks for your reaction. Stay safe and stay metal.

Took many listens before it dawned on me the intro the tension building is all Haruna speeding up the kick drum. She starts at one speed, for a few counts, doubles for some, and then doubles again. Freaking genius drumming. Does the same later when the intro pattern repeats.

Thank you for another fascinating reaction and analysis. I have mentioned before, the technicality and skill required to play a lot of their material, does mean they are not going too crazy on stage with theatrics. How Midori and Miyako, keep in sync from either side of the stage is a mystery. I am sure it is witchcraft!

This is a very personal song for miyako because of her love for Chopin and Devorak as a clasically trained pianist. She pretty much composes the entire piece as tribute to those composers and composes most of Lovebites songs arrangement and composition wise. Miyako has said if she didnt have a career playing in rock and metal bands she'd likely would've ended up as a music teacher.
Asami the vocalist came up with the lyrics and has pretty much written the lyrics of every lovebites song except for one song in whuch was written by Haruna and was written for her and mihos previous band Destrose. Asami suggested the choral backing vocal

Miyako ending the song on a Tierce de Picardie, is a major cord of the tonic at the end of a musical section that is either modal or in a minor key. This is achieved by raising the third of the exepted minor triad, as form of resolution.

    From France: Dear David Heretic,
There is a Japanese group that I would like to introduce you to, it is Wagakki Band.
He makes a clever and judicious mix of rock music (and even we can say heavy metal rock) with traditional instruments: the Tsugaru Shamisen (banjo with a square body and only 3 strings which is played with a plectrum having a curious and characteristic shape: the bashi); the Koto (large horizontal zither); the Shakuhachi (bamboo flute) and the Wadaiko (percussion ensemble). Added to this are the three classics guitar / bass / drums, quite virtuosos in their genre ...
It is not a simple juxtaposition of instruments side by side in a motley way, but a real fusion of the whole.
In addition, Suzuhana Yuko, the creator of the group and the principal singer, excellent moreover, practices an art of traditional song known as Shigin which gives a strange color to this rock group.
On stage they are dressed in clothes designed from traditional costumes and they have a very dynamic occupation of the stage space.
    It's a total show: music / scenography / movement / costumes and lights ...
I really like this sequence of two songs which shows the relevance of this rather fantastic group.
    Good discovery !

Prepare yourself before do a reaction to them.
If you liked the guitarists of Lovebites... I can't imagine what will happen when you react to the guitarists of Nemophila.
But, most of all, I don't know what will happen when you discover the singer's voice.
My suggestion, for a FIRST reaction, is that you do one of their covers of well known metal band songs:
