Voice Lessons: Use the "NG" to Find Mask Resonance and Sing Easier - THE SEQUEL

  • In 2014 I made a 5-minute video on the finding mask resonance with the consonant blend “ng”… since then it has had over 100,000 views. Scrolling through the comments it was wonderful to see how many people found new vocal freedom and ease with this exercise, but there were also lots of questions…
    In this lesson, I am reteaching how to use the “ng” while answering those questions with the hope that even more of you can use this exercise as a pathway to freedom and ease in your voice.
    So, if you struggle with throat tension while singing, if your tone is breathy or unfocused, if you want to improve the quality of your tone, or if your onset of sound is too heavy or hard… the “ng” can help.
    The more you do this exercise, the more coordinated you will be about allowing ng-to-vowel to work for you.
    Have fun with this and let me know how it goes.
    Until next time…rejoice in your voice!
    Hugs,
    Tricia

    Using the ng has been baffling for me, i kept using the ng while still experiencing alot of throat action. Using the yawn seems like a healthier addition to add up. Additionally, I think that thinking of a lifted sound should also be helpful. The video is so informative. Thank you so much

    Love this! I combined it with singing over a candle flame and it really didn’t move - first time ever! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 many thanks. Just one question; is there a way to make that switch from ng to the vowel even more smooth? The quality of the sounds differ so much, and I’m looking for a more gradual change.

    • @rejoiceinyourvoice-tricial3731
      @rejoiceinyourvoice-tricial3731  Před 3 lety +4

      Menno, this is great! Awesome job combining the two exercises! For me, to make the ng to vowel more smooth, I would go more slowly, move the tongue less and start with a more quiet, pianissimo, tone. Too much air can make the transition abrupt. Let me know if these ideas work. Have fun!

      So glad you are finding them helpful. Great question... there are a ton of examples... off the top of my head... Adam Lambert, Adele, Arianna Grande, Michael Bublé... also in classical singers: Pavarotti, Beverly Sills, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Thomas Hampson. Hope this helps. All the best with your singing.

    These are GREAT EXPLANATIONS on using the “ng” sound in a practical well explained way! I recently found your previous “ng” video and am finding it very helpful.Thanks so much for this new video! Using the “ng” sound and then slightly dropping the tongue to get into a vowel is very helpful.Thank you for doing this!

    Took me years before I realised I was doing more of a 'ing' from not using enough nasal placement, so gaining nothing from the Choir warm up we did. It was only when someone told me to imagine you have a cold and how you speak with a blocked nose that I finally got it! - Great explanation btw - probably the best on youtube.?

      @rejoiceinyourvoice-tricial3731  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks, Steve, for watching! You are right... it is like the stuffed nose feeling :) Sometimes I think that is the hardest thing about singing is that we all have different reference points for the sensations that we are making. So glad you discovered how to make the ng work for you. All the best with your singing.

    The video is really amazing. One question I would like to figure out: when I record my "NG" humming 54321, it sometimes comes out as /a:/ vowel particularly in the last three notes. What's the problem and how to fix it?

    • @rejoiceinyourvoice-tricial3731
      @rejoiceinyourvoice-tricial3731  Před 3 lety

      Hmmm, double check that your tongue and soft palate are still touching as you descend in pitch. The /a/ will happen when the tongue and soft palate separate. Let me know if this helps.

  • @PaulDoyle93
    @PaulDoyle93 Před 3 lety

    As well as you have said on it but the reason after the NG you do the vowel the reason it keeps going is cos the air is coming out the mouth then? And just your thorts on this, I went to a singing teacher time ago and she said if you don’t smoke you will have a better singing voice
    Which I understand you can still make singing sounds why you smoke but also when you don’t smoke you have a healthier voice therefore you have a healthier singing voice :) but the first exercise she made me do was the NG ha, it is great but going for my second lesson next week or so but thanks for your vids, take care :)

    • @rejoiceinyourvoice-tricial3731
      @rejoiceinyourvoice-tricial3731  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Paul! Great that you are already familiar with the 'Ng to a vowel" :) Awesome! Yes, when you move from the ng to the vowel your sound will travel out your mouth. You don't need to feel a lot of air traveling out your mouth... but it is no longer in your nose. All the best with your singing. Wonderful that you are taking lessons! Cheering for you!

      That's really hard to say without hearing you. But, if it feels good, is sustainable and sounds good you are probably doing many things well.

  • @lizettegratacoswys2958

    Is this also mix voice... to produce mix voice?

    • @rejoiceinyourvoice-tricial3731
      @rejoiceinyourvoice-tricial3731  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi! Good question... We can use the "ng to open vowel" in any part of our range... we can use it with chest voice, head voice, or when exploring mixed voice. So the goal of the exercise isn't to produced mixed voice, but the singer can use mixed voice when using the exercise. Singers of all styles and genres can use the "ng to open vowel" to find balance in their tone. Hope that makes sense. All the best with your singing!
