- Watch this animation video to learn about de Quervain tendon release surgery. Sufferers of “mummy’s thumb” or de Quervain tenosynovitis experience sharp pain and/or swelling at the wrist under the thumb.
Prolonged and/or forceful use of your thumb and wrist may lead to the thickening and swelling of the tendon or the tunnel. The tendons no longer glide freely within the tunnel, resulting in pain when you move your thumb and wrist.
If your symptoms are mild, you may be given conservative treatment such as:
Activity modifications
Wearing of splint
Steroid injection
If the symptoms are more severe and persistent, you may be required to undergo the de Quervain tendon release surgery which is typically a day surgery procedure done under local anaesthesia. Your surgeon will cut through the sheath surrounding the tendons to release the pressure on them, allowing them to glide freely when you move your thumb and wrist.
Steps in the de Quervain tendon release surgery:
1) Your wrist and hand are numbed with a local anaesthetic
2) An incision will be made on your wrist, near the base of your thumb
3) Surgeon cuts the sheath surrounding the tendon, taking care to avoid any nerve close by
4) Incision is closed and a compression bandage is applied. Your wrist and hand are then bandaged.

Had De Quervain Release Surgery 9 days ago and just got my splint and stitches removed yesterday and I hate how my thumb is all tingly and weak when I try to bend it. I have physical therapy to help in a week!
Just had this done as there was a cyst under that sheath so they released the sheath and found I had tendonitis too so she took Care of that while she was in there I had a cyst right on the side of my wrist on that tendon under the sheath
How long did you took to recover to normal wrist movement? And any loss of strength or restriction of movement?
@khairulhazwan7631 I had it done about 6 weeks ago and I'm almost back to full movement I still have a couple angles that it's tender when I move it but other than that not too bad I do have some scar tissue that's sticking that physical therapist has been working on. I lost more than half my mobility right after surgery but the more you move your fingers while it's wrapped up the better and quicker you get back to normal once the wraps and splint is off
How about now? How have you healed up? @@ChelseaGarcia91
Is your cyst hard and immobile?
How to treat Thickened Synovial sheath of the 6th compartment tendons. It is swelling and paining continuously on above the wrist
Just had this surgery done this morning
I am SO happy it was done. The doctor said that it was the thickest one he had to cut in a long, long time. I literally felt the release when it was cut. I know things will turn out well.
It might be a bit too soon to be asking for results, but do you know how long it would take to heal?
How is your healing process?
I think I have it too. Can’t do weird movements like zipper jackets with thumb and index , pushups or certain pulling movements with hand
@lammydibammy5840 I'm into a week in healing. The outside is ok in healing but I am a diabetic since I was young, so it may take a bit longer. But I positive it will heal completely. Just need to do light lifting and nothing strenuous i was told.
@@carleneeagleman8506 So, I'm just curious--is there any downside to no longer having the sheath around the tendon, do you know? I'm hoping to avoid this surgery for my de Quervain, but who knows? And I'm wondering whether there is any consequence to cutting the sheath. Happy and rapid healing to you!
You know I am not sure but I tell you I feel so much better and am able to write again
Does the tendon sheath need to be reattached?
Will cutting it fully cause downstream problem as the tendon sheath is to facilitate the sliding of the tendon tissue surrounding anatomical structures and prevent the tendon from losing its course of action during muscle contraction.
No.
Getting this done tomorrow on both hands
Wishing you a speedy recovery. I m suffering from this too
How did it go? I may have to have this. Doing cortizone injection phase right now. Delaying the inevitable, I am afraid.
@@CrowTAfraid of what?
@@tonyz6421 Delaying the inevitable of having surgery.
@@tonyz6421Delaying the inevitable....like I said above.
Dok kalau terbentuk nya dah lama banget apa bisa di normal kan kembali?
seems like a very simple surgery. my tendon hurts and i have De Quervain’s tendinosis i will probably get surgery
I have it too but the dr didn’t suggest me to proceed with the surgery. My hand become so bad now
Just got this done, hope it feels better but this cast is annoying
Hello, can you update me on your recovery? Any regrets or complications? I hope it did go well because of something I might need to consider.
Same!
How much was the cost friend? I wish you a speedy recovery
@@joncena168 for me it was free became i am full time student with no income
@joAnna102911 , I just got my splint and stitches removed yesterday and I hate how my thumb is all tingly and weak when I try to bend it. How long did it take for the tingly and weak bending of the thumb to stop for you?
What happens to the sheath. Does it grow back? Or, gone forever and the wrist operates fine without the sheath? Ty
Good question.
Fine without it
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Who needs that stinkin sheath!
no thank you
looks like a horrible solution slicing it up like that, hacks
