Great overview. I’m an MFT 2.5K owner and totally agree! For me, the look has never been bettered by BMD. If Magic Lantern were to come along and hack it for slowmo and a few 4K options the system would have a new lease of life.
Slow mo on this camera would unlock its potential!
Great review, Michael. I subscribed. I purchased my BMCC 2.5K EF mount for $1,037 on 2/19/14. I bought a Tokina lens and a Digistor 240GB SSD. And I never used the camera. Long story. It stayed in its original box for nine years. I only recently unboxed it. Though it was dormant for years, the battery charged to 100%. I've recorded RAW and ProRes to the SSD, and I've transferred files to my computer. I want to learn the original software before upgrading it. (The last update was published in March, 2015. I would've thought there'd be more updates.) I'm having trouble launching Resolve, even having the dongle, so I'll be calling Blackmagic tech support. I bought my BMCC because I fell in love with the image quality, and I liked the Blackmagic story. Now, after a long wait, I'm easing into the learning curve. And there's so much to learn! I'm excited to start this journey.
Спасибо за обзор! Это лучшая камера👍я купил такую же BMCC 2.5K и не разу не пожалел что выбор пал на нее👍супер
I still have one, in addition to two pocket cameras, and the 2.5k MFT is still my favorite.
I love the image. It just works for the more artistic look I’m after.
I shoot with a Metabones and lots of Nikkor and Sigma art lenses.
I love the image. Also, I have the Sigma Art 18 to 35 and have also been looking at the Sigma Art 20mm F1.4 for a while.
Perfect video! Thank you. It's a great analysis. Going to buy this week, EF version.
Great video
Cheers mate
Nice review of that great Camera Michael, thanks for that ! I bought one for a very good price last year, it took me a while to figure out how I wanted to rig it and on what projects I was gonna use it. Finally used it on a music video I released yesterday if you'd like to see the footage.
That's great Pascal. Yes I'd love to see the footage.
You can remove internal Battery from the mainboard as there are some reports of the internal battery pack starting to enlarge over time and can cause problems. I removed them without any issues, using an NP-f Adapter instead. There are some tutorials on how to do this online.
Great thanks I've seen a video of someone replacing the battery. Do you recommend just removing the battery and leaving it out or removing it then replacing it?
@@MichaelGreenwoodMG I actually removed them completely on both my BMCCs. I added the Smallrig NPf-Adapter-Plate to both Cages, so that takes care of the Power without me having to worry. You might find a replacement via Aliexpress, but after reading a bit into it, I decided to go without an internal battery.
@@saintmanuel thanks can you link me to a video to do this please?

@@saintmanuel where did you get a cage for the 2.5k?
Nice review .
I remember me and a friend of mine dreaming and wanting to rent one of these to try it out , it was way out of budget back then . After a long time I came across one really cheap a 2.5k Ef mount , it was full of battle scars on the chassis battered a bit like bobby fet's helmet ,I wish It could speak because it looks like has worked really hard and probably could tell me some stories . I get decent results with some m42 lens but never tried it with proper glass but managed with just vintage cheap glass. What I like about this camera is the simplicity of the menu and quality of the image, and if you filmed it right “ because the conditions have to be right ” afterwards with a bit of colour grading you get really interesting results ,So far I’m ok with pro Res HQ I am curious about raw but I’m not familiar with the work flow, and a bit shy of HD space. This thing pushes you to learn things , and research on how to film properly , I love learning with it .
Would like to get some accessories for it like the light guard and a cage but since its quit old , stuff is not really available and hard to find.
Hat’s off for black magic for making this type of quality available for mortals.
hi, i picked one up for 420€ last week, i didnt have any time to play with it, i had to replace battery and no time to buy an sdi monitor, but im excited to see how it matches my gh5 in terms of image and workflow. Thanks for the content
has anyone mentioned that you look like that guy from breaking bad?
love the video btw.
Love using the "old generation" of Blackmagic cine cameras. I have two BMPCC OG and I picked up a completely fitted out (500 GB Sandisk SSD, Rokinon 12mm Lens, 15mm rail mount and rails V mount battery, shoulder rig and cage) - BMCC MFT like mint in the original box for a very reasonable price ($720z). Now how can I go wrong for filming presentations? I record raw and run the SDI to a Blackmagic SDI to HDMI converter and on to the ATEM Mini Pro ISO for recording with other cameras in sync. I can then drop in the high-resolution RAW file into Resolve over the HDMI version and be sync'd. I also have a BMPCC 4K and the pixel race stops there. I keep this as a studio camera. I love these classic Blackmagic Cine cameras - they fit my requirements perfectly.
I think they're fantastic cameras and I'm glad to hear you're putting them to good use. I think they're really reliable workhorses. I haven't use an Atem yet but need to get one and the SDI to HDMI converter. I was looking at one of the Atems which has SDI but I think HDMI with a converter is the way to go. I really like the idea of editing a few cameras together whilst filming is taking place. This would save a lot of time in post. These camera are really good value for money at the moment for what you get especially if you can get a rig with it etc and what they can do. The SSDs are cost effective too and store a lot. I just keep buying more harddrives when I find deals on them.
@@MichaelGreenwoodMG Yes - I have picked up a second SSD - 256gb cheap also and have my eye out for more. Once the current project is completed, I wanted to try some of my classic Angenieux lenses on this camera - especially my 15-150 that was also a great find at a great price - much better than the 12-120's (which I also have) in my opinion and much rarer - still in the original box. I use the little primes on my OG's all the time. Just completes the ability to give some really great cinematic images.
Great camera , if that's you budget.
Otherwise a used pocket 4k is the wat to go. With dual native ISO and a wider dynamic range.
I have the 6K Pro too and the dual native ISO is amazing!
This video was shot on the 2.5k?
It was shot on the Blackmagic 4K Production with the intro and b-roll shot on the Canon 90D. I'll do another video soon shot entirely on the 2.5K.
@@MichaelGreenwoodMG the colors and just overall quality looks fantastic! It's got a unique organic feel to it compared to other product review videos that look too digital. I will look forward to more videos from you with the 2.5k!
@@MarkLargo great thanks for the feedback! An organic, more filmic look is exactly what I'm aiming for, rather than the digital look.
Hey Michael! Do you prefer the look of the 2.5K over the look of the 4K Production?
impossible to find 2.5MFT for under $1500
I can't see any MFT versions on Ebay UK at the moment.
What De-noise do you use for this camera footage?
I didn't denoise this video but would use DaVinci's built in denoiser.
USE NEAT VIDEO IT CLEANS BETTER THAN DAVINC'S
You can't transfer files via the TB though.
Yes you're right, it's only for using Ultrascopes.
It’s my favorite camera but it is definitely for advanced videographers/filmmakers. I have used it professionally to varied results (never films), and you also need to be a good editor. Great video.
great thanks for your support Frank. I agree it's a challenge to use and for experts only. So definitely not for someone who needs autofocus and wants a "point and shoot" camera. DaVinci Resolve Studio is my go to editor these days, since I moved away from Premiere Pro. What other videos would you like to see from me?
Excellent analysis, I always had a fascination for the first gen BMD cameras and in fact I, too, own both 2.5K and Production 4K, though I'm an amateur and not even nearly as skilled a filmmaker as I'd need to be to exploit their full potential. By the way, that rig on the Production 4K is magnificient, that cage and those handles are sexy! XD ..And looks like you even have a rec button on one handle! Would you mind sharing details about it? Thanks.
Yes the rec button is great and really handy. I will put video together showing how this is setup and works.
