Is it possible for a complete beginner to learn Scotland The Brave on the Bagpipe practice chanter? Yes!! Some instructors will tell you this classic tune is much too technical for beginners until hours and hours have been spent on tedious scale exercises. Well here, I’m bringing more fun into learning the Chanter... with the well-known tune, Scotland The Brave! Most of the complex embellishments have been removed so you can first get a grasp on finding the finger holes while getting your first tune nailed down!

Question: I’ve accepted the learn the bagpipes challenge. I am Scottish. More than 30 year’s experience as a musician. I play flute, clarinet, sax, bassoon, tin whistle, recorder… where do I start? WHAT do I buy?

How much does your bagpipe costs in the background it looks soo cool
They were a gift, so I'm not sure how much they were. They are high quality wooden pipes. The mounts are just Nickle (I think) not engraved, once you get into the silver engraving the price goes up and up in a hurry.
I would love to learn the pipes but i have difficulty reading the music and play the notes maybe i am too old at 74
The oldest person I met who was learning was just 93 years old!! I've more than one student who doesn't read sheet music. You've got this! Any Bagpipe supply store online with customer service can sell you a Sheppard, Mcallum, RG Hardie, or Walsh practice chanter for $100 to $120.

His chanters sound great and are a lot cheaper which helps if you are on a budget or saving up for a set of pipes!

Thanks for your question, Teamplay-LP! I think your referring to the bottom hole on my chanter? The pinky of my bottom hand is quite low down, as the chanter I'm playing is a "short" chanter. Most practice chanters you buy now are "long" or "standard" length, comparable to the length of the pipe chanter on the highland pipes. My practice chanter is really quite old, but I just love the sound! (Also, my longer practice chanter is sometimes harder to fit all my fingers in the camera shot when I'm filming!).

Anyway i think the way you are teaching is great compared to others on youtube, but i would like more sheet musik in the videos
Oh yes, I forgot I had my pipes behind me in that video! I had just propped them up so they would be in the shot. The Bass drone is shortened, so the pipes stayed balanced and didn't fall off the small chair. If I were to pick them up and tune them, defiantly I'd end up sliding that bass drone would up, away from the mounts!

Master pls help me my mccallum practice chanter only has 8 holes total??? U said a chanter is soposed to have 9? Help pls
