- In this video we head out for an informal chat on the water to show you the new pedal drive canoe system we have been working on this year. This adapter box can be used to mount anything that uses the Hobie mirage drive mounting geometry, including a Bixby kayak motor. The entire adapter is also removable in case you want to return to normal canoe mode. We will have a much more detailed video of this in a few weeks, and you can see much of it on instagram at / capefalconbuilds and you can find our plans and video courses on our website at capefalconkayaks.com

Your timing is impeccable. Yesterday my wife was saying that the arthritis in her hands is reaching the point that perhaps we should think about a pedal craft. Being a s-o-f guy I started looking last night, then this....
Very well done video. Everything looks awesome.
Fantastic! I've enjoyed the related content on Instagram and it's great to now see this longer-form video. Excellent craftsmanship/engineering on display. Hope it's working well for you personally - brilliant to see you out on the water.
Well done! Brilliant! Thanks for sharing.
Excellent, impressive engineering and in your design to harness this.
Liz and Brian are national treasures.
that is amazing you put one of those in SOF. Kudo's Sir!
Any thought to making a drop in keel that will plug the hole for sailing, instead of the submarine?
Yeah, I’ll talk about that more in the next video, but the short version is, I’m gonna try it next year and we’ll see how the frame can handle the stress
I built my skin on frame canoe (Kudzu craft Stonefly) with a hobie mirage drive well from the inflatable Hobie kayaks. I was in a rush to finish it for the holidays so the strong plastic pre-made well was chosen. The plastic isn't visible from above.
Instead of building the well up high above the waterline i added a cloth boot from the top of the plastic drive well to just below my feet when peddling.
For steering I routed 0.8mm dyneema lines through black plastic tubes to a small carved wooden tiller on the left gunwale where my hand rests.
The peddle drives make a world of difference when going upwind.
Where did you get the well?
I think that boat at the end is a Com-Pac Horizon Cat.
thanks!
I’ve got zero interest in these pedal things for myself, but they seem pretty popular. I see more and more people fishing with them, and that’s great. There’s no exercise in using a motor, and more quiet is more better.
Hello there, great work! I can't remember where but I think you may have compared the mirage to the Vibe brand drive, yes? If so, where might that content be? thanks
It's awesome to see your continuing development of systems. Where were you filming? Thought I recognized Scapoose Bay early on.
Thanks, this was just the Columbia between 33rd and Kellie point.
VERY interesting! Nice!
Dude! Man! I am so happy for you.
Why not make a keel to go into the slot where you put the "submarine"? I don't sail, so this might be a stupid question.
Catboat looks a bit like a Nonsuch.
For a peddle drive system, would you benefit from sitting lower.
More stability, less air resistance.
Can’t really go much lower without having to lean uncomfortably far back. I mean, you could definitely do it, but it would be like sitting on a racing recumbent bike, which aren’t super comfortable. Stability isn’t really a big deal because you can just make the canoe as wide as you want to for the stability you need. There’s so much resistance from the canoe itself that I’m not not sure the body position makes a huge difference.
Speedy
That was a Ford F150 Truck Boa!.
You make it overcomplicated is there a meaning in all this ?
What part didn’t you understand?
What's a cat boat?
Cat boats are single sail sailboats. Many “old time” looking boats like the Com-Pac Horizon Cat in the video have a trapezoid-shaped sail known as a “gaff rig.”
