Honestly kinda blown away by the art and soundtrack for this game
Me too; certified fresh.
Unlike anything I've seen or played. A follow up is going to be a very hard task indeed.
Definitely exceeded my expectations. Very strange and disturbing stuff.
Yep, it's just sad that this game doesn't get as much attention as something like Hollow Knight.
@@ghostreflect5940 I don't think the gameplay is quite as good as hollow knight is overall, but everything presentation-wise about blasphemous is basically an 11/10
Blasphemous uses Christian iconocraphy and Spanish gothic aesthetics to make an entirely new, brutal dark fantasy setting based around an ironfisted medieval theocracy... Does that make the setting... Christpunk?
Baroquepunk and Churchpunk are some cool alternatives people are suggesting, too! I like Churchpunk. Puts more focus on the specific object of oppression here, and puts focus away from Christ, which fits the punk theme all the better. Christ is your friend. The church, on the other hand...
Just like Dark Souls uses myth, just let it be it's own thing.
I feel like Diablo 1 kinda did this too. I kinda wish these devs would take the Diablo IP off Blizzard's hands just for the fact that they can actually follow through on a dark theme.
I wouldn't call it strictly medieval. Much of the design of Blasphemous seems to me more inspired by catholic aesthetics from the 16th century and possibly early 17th century (the years of the Counter Reformation).
Churchpunk.
Christpunk?!!, dude, you open my eyes
For the non Spanish speakers if they are curious about what the titles of the songs mean.:
00:00 Give Me Your Torment
02:27 The Death of the Neighing
05:22 Lands of Saffron
09:05 May the bells bend me
13:54 A path of white steps
18:59 Gelid Expiration
21:58 You will deliver your face to the Lady
25:24 Your Face Blackened
29:29 Chants of Confession
35:04 Have Mercy
39:15 Arpeggios in Ocher
42:41 The Moan (Quejio is a coloquial way of saying it, especially down here in Adalucia)
47:59 Taranto to my sister (Taranto per se doesnt have a translation to english , but is a form of flamenco that originates from Almeria)
51:37 The Quenching of the Fans.
55:38 Couplets of incense
58:33 Between Needleworks (this is a reference to the Holy Week in Spain, both of the traditional song that can be heared during the processions and the tradiotional black dresses women wear during said processions)
01:03:01 Forbidden and covered in dust.
01:07:03 Tears of Small seed and gold.
01:10:17 To the beat of your contours
01:15:05 And i Will give you fire.
01:18:48 For a compass martyr
01:24:19 Saetas of High Balconies (Again another reference to the Holy Week, a Saeta is a song a single man sings from a high balcón while a statue of Christ crosses below said momento during a procession during Holy Week)
01:29:32 His silver Kiss
01:32:45 Steps towards the Holiness
01:35:06 Guilt look
01:39:07 That in procession march.
01:44:20 By way of ancient processions.
Que bien traducido
@@pyrefly7575 Ventajas de haber aprendido ingles desde pequeño
@Jason Moore Actuallly, every single title here is related to Spain´s versión of catholicism, so you were Reading religious stuff all this time.
un pequeño apunte, creo que el título de "que las campanas me doblen" debería traducirse como May the bells toll me, ya que ese doblar hace referencia al verbo de doblar (o redoblar) las campanas, no al de doblar una barra, o algo por el estilo
La Muerte de Los Relinchos - The Death of the Neighing . de Los Relinchos - "(Horses) neighing" or "crying" or "laughter(ha)" ? how right to understand?
I love when Indy developers make amazing games with an OST better than any AAA big studio game AND with waaaaaaaaay less budget! Mil gracias The Game Kitchen por un juego y una experiencia increible!
Is not just the first case of indie developers create a masterpiece ,go back then to 2002 blade edge of darkness another masterpiece created by Spanish developers
Video games should be like this soulful with atmosphere ,created with passion and loved ,focused to the gamers satisfaction ,not the profit big company developers ,the only thing is care about money ..the result of those modern games are really shallow and repetitive souless corporate shit......
There are triple AAA with amazing music as well
There are AAA titles that have better soundtrack than this though? You just haven't seen them yet
Halo, Doom, the souls series, shadow of the colossus, God of war, Silent hill, Resident evil. But of course indie ost can be great too, I like Stardew valley, Hollow Knight, one song from Dandara, Pathologic and ofc Blasphemous.
i usually agree, but there are much better examples than blasphemous like ori, hollow knight, undertale, cuphead etc

Agreed 👍. I have played some games that have stories more complex and impactful than any movie I've ever seen.
Ah, Blasphemous and the blood-soaked journey through the cursed land of Cvstodia... My graphics card broke down as I was playing this and had recently arrived to the mother of mothers. Standing in front of the gate as it opened to reveal a massive, unexplored area full of danger was a thrill I won't forget any time soon. I was also playing this while caring for my sick mother, who sadly passed away on the 10th of july (I was by her side all the way through as I promised her I would be)... The soundtrack was eerily soothing, and even though the overall atmosphere of the game is one of sadness and unrelenting brutality on a scale that makes you feel insignificant, just a handful of games throughout the years have given me these emotional highs combined with the sorrowful lows.
I'm getting a new GPU soon so I can resume my journey through Cvstodia. In a house that feels bigger and is quieter, but I swear I will see this through. I love you all.
Sweet dreams, dearest humble one.
Sorry to hear about your Mom. Glad to hear that you’re strong and using the music to help you. My friend introduced me to this game and although I’ve never played it, the soundtrack is unlike anything I’ve ever heard. Like a Skyrim, but otherworldly.

As one other comment put in in Jim's video:
"Finally, a video game that truly captures the Catholic experience." The Pope
But does it though? I'm Catholic myself, and I'm very unsure about this game. I have not played the game, so I'd like a little help understanding the developer's intention behind the imagery here; let me know if I'm understanding it wrong here.
The Catholic theme of the game to me seems to be treated very much in an uncharitable way. I understand that the game is a statement on the inquisition, right? While I understand the perspective on that era I feel that the game is a bit heavy handed, and that it lacks a bit of nuance. I had hoped that the game's concept of being "Blasphemous" was aimed at distinguishing between the proper Faith and a corrupted use of the Faith, but it seems to me that "Blasphemous" here only serves to demonize the Faith writ large. Am I reading this game wrongly? Does the game highlight a proper conduct of Faith, or does it intend to portray its Catholic theme as inherently evil or fallen?
@@user-on6ol8eh5w: First, what I said was a joke.
Second, I don't know. I am not a catholic, so cannot tell you if it demonizes the Gospel or not. I personally loved the game for its morbid aesthetic and atmosphere but I understand it is not for everybody so honestly I recommend just playing the game or watching a video or two and come up with your own conclusions on what it says on the matters of faith.
@@gabrielpadro5589 yeah I know it was a joke. Dont worry about that. Thanks for the reply. I've been watching videos, and at first it seemed vague with regards to which why it was leaning. I'm still uncertain, although I think its leaning more towards that sort of Atheistic resentment of the church sort of feeling. Too bad, because I can see the Dark Souls influences; Dark Souls is my favorite game. Oh well.
@@user-on6ol8eh5w you are definitely treating it wrongly. it is only ment to deconstruct indoctrination. something that we can all agree isnt exactly the best. this game never outright says catholacism bad penitence bad. it is extremely nuanced thankfully

@@Sigismund697 Oh shit, someone else remembers Baroque :D Good soundtrack on that as well, btw.

Kodaemon I’m surprised more than one person remembers Baroque other than me!
I love so much that dark, sinister and twisted Christian aesthetics. The music, the design, everything is mindblowing about this game.
Translating these to English is quite a mindscrew of a challenge. I'll do my best to provide slightly more accurate titles, for those unacquainted with Andalusian speech and poetics and Sevillian Holy Week and foklore. Apologies, I'm a huge language nerd and a bit of a nitpick. Y trianero :)
00:00 Bring me your torment (i.e. 'Punish me')
02:27 The End of Neighing
(I know, it sounds weird even in Spanish, probably implying the sudden silence taking over, almost as if Death/God/The Miracle itself took over the land)
05:22 Lands of Saffron ('Albero' is a saffron-like coloured earth, used in arenas and gardens, originary from Seville)
09:05 May the Bells Toll ! (the 'ME doblen' part is a redundant reflexive used in Andalusian speech, for emphasis)
13:54 A Path of White Steps
18:59 Freezing Exhalation (you can liisten to 'La Saeta' Holy Week march hidden within the melody)
21:58 You will surrender your visage to the Lady
(i.e. You'll submit to the Lady)
25:24 Thine Charred Visage (i.e. Your burnt face)
29:29 Chants of Confession
('Cantes' mean Flamenco singing, broadly speaking)
35:04 Have Mercy
39:15 Ochre Arpeggios
42:41 Lament ('Quejío' is a feature in Flamenco singing, where the 'cantaor' laments and expresses deep pain -due to jelaousy, heartbreak, sorrow. Similar features appear in Hindu and Islamic singing)
47:59 Taranto to my sister (Taranto is a form of flamenco - like most in-game prayers's names)
51:37 The Fortitude behind Fans. (i.e. "Hidden temperance & strength"; there's traditionally a lot of meaning and a secret language in the way people used their fans in hot weather. Thus, the title alludes to the paradoxical strength of will and character within someone using something apparently frail like a simple fan)
55:38 Incensed Songs
58:33 Among Embroidery (alludes to the complex and ellaborate embroidery in Catholic images; i.e. a stern/sorrowful image surrounded by ellaborate decorations)
01:03:01 Forbidden and covered in dust.
01:07:03 Tears of Crimson and Gold. (Blood and glory
, lost or unattainable)
01:10:17 (Dancing) to the candence of your body (veeeery passionate, sensual, intimate; walking that fine line between life and death, between love and hate)
01:15::05 And I will give you fire.
01:18:48 For a Martyr of Rhythm ('Mártires del Compás' is a famous flamenco-fusion band)
01:24:19 Saetas from High Balconies ( A Saeta -lit. 'an arrow', as it usually expresses pain and/or compassion-, is a song a single person sings 'spontaneously' from a high balcony while an image of Christ/Virgin Mary passes by in procession; usually resulting in the procession stopping till the Saeta ends)
01:29:32 Her Silver Kiss
(i.e. an allusion to the Virgin Mary, health and salvation; or in this case of Crisanta's sword and the chance of redemption through pain)
01:32:45 Steps Towards Sanctity
01:35:06 Guilty Stare
01:39:07 May they march!
01:44:20 The Olden Processions' Way (i.e. emphasis in keeping with solemn traditions)
I think The End of Neighing refers to the horses you find rotting in the holy line
Quality comment, would love to see Holy Week in Seville.
@@SexyBeckett Thanks! Holy Week is quite something. And quite overwelming at the same time. Incredibly crowded processions, solemn bands marching along, or under eerie silence, coordinated teams shuffle their feet as they carry incredibly heavy wooden figures/biblical sceens. In Seville they carry the weight atop the back of their necks (just look for 'costalero' online) after they have prayed for something or as a way to atone for. I'm not a believer, but it's worth witnessing once.

Well. Maybe I am all alone in this world with this problem, but with me this game resonated so much. My tormented, and twisted masochistic attitudes toward my strict chatolic belief, which ushered me from my youth, and even oozes in my current personal life.
I was never good enough, I wanted a lifeline similar to Christ's, or approximate him in a sense. I always saw myself as one who needs eternal penitance, because i had felt myself inherently sinful. I was nice with everyone, even the ones who kicked me, beated me, spat on me (literary), called me names, even with the ones who used me, crushed me phisically, and mentally. Nobody ever stick out for me, which is very painful to remember with my current mindset. I approached it in a sense, the bible says. That people who has been through a lot are the ones who are beloved by God the most. The more you suffer, the closer you are to god. I have ambivalent feelings towards the Chatolic Church. Sometimes I fear the way it will butt in my life again. Other times I miss it so much.
I am reaching my 30's, and I presume that this feeling will not change in the future. Maybe I am the blashphemous to say it, but I highly doubt any Church represents God. More like a God like The Miracle in this game. A twisted figure, which can be used to manipulate the masses, and make their lifes miserable, if the interest of someone or a group dictates so.
I am fed up, and I speculate a similar frustration with the Church leaded to this idea about this game. I live in eastern europe, but I am certain that a similar scenario can occured on the other side of the continent. Maybe the creator of the story has been through a similar life lesson as myself.
Just rambling around, don't mind it. Have a wonderful day, the music is cool, chill and take care!
Good luck on life brother, things might change better, It's just hard to find a good angle to see life, ^^, much love
@@pyrowallcroft4687 Thx brother. You keep your head up too!
I don't think you need to suffer, Jesus did that for you to repent. So do that instead. Don't you think?
You might consider seeing a therapist about your struggles. Either way, all the best to ya!
Amazing OST. One of the biggest reasons why I loved this game.
I'll play again someday. Mea culpa.
Glad to see people mention Diablo in these comments. That was the first game I thought of as I heard more of the music, and it couldn't have felt more appropriate.
RE: Arpegios en Ocre
Anyone get Diablo 1 - Tristram vibes?
Not imitative of it, but it captures the spirit of it better than a single Diablo 3 track.
Me too, I strangely get the first Diablo vibe especially in Albedo.
@@pin6722 thats tierras de azafran
was rushing through my mind first thing listening to this aswell! def good musician for any diablo inspired art
"Cantes de Confesión" is magnificent!
Mercy Dreams Scenario...
siiii,también es mi favorita 🥰
No sé pero si uno leé todos los títulos de corrido, parece que está recitando un rezo, fantástico.
Yes! Everything about this game has such a entrancing and bewitching aura covered in pure hopelessness and gloom, it's so unique
I bought the deluxe version in Steam with the comic, artwork and soundtrack, because I think the studio and artists deserve it. Still I prefer to listen on youtube for convenience.
Ах, как же это отлично написано. Полый Рыцарь, Мертвые Клетки, Богохульный, помню их всех и храню в своем сердце.
I remember seeing in the interview that the devs wanted to show Spanish and Seville culture through their game. You have no idea how much deeper I looked in Spanish style guitar music after Blasphemous
An album I used to love years ago is called Azucar: Magic of Spanish Guitar.
Cantes de Confesión is divine and serene...Hauntingly beautiful!!!
For those who are not devout Catholics, this music gives a good impression of the sorrow felt while we are praying. So many mysteries remain hidden. Adorado corazón sea.
Guys, this one is being released on vinyl currently. 3 coloured LPs. maybe my message will make someone else as happy as me) I preordered it today
The OST adds that miscellaneous and mischievous sounds, so graduating!
This soundtrack just nudged this Dark Metroid into greatness.
Right in the feels...this game is a work of art before a video game and it really shows, also amazing game mechanics and overall one of my favorites
Very unique soundtrack add a mysterious atmosphere to the game
Such heart pounding music. Reminds me of painful catholic processions I had to endure as a child :D
The penitent one would say this if he wasn't sworn to silence
Given the game's theme and atmosphere, I'm not surprised to hear musical motives inspired by the music played during Holy Week in southern Spain (various types of marches played by military-styled marching bands).
So far I think I've identified two of them:
The track "Gélida Expiración" from 20:49 onwards reminds me of "La Saeta", a song by Serrat famously adapted as a Holy Week march.
And the track "Cantes de Confesión" starts much like "Y fue azotado", by Francisco Ortiz Morón y Sergio Larrinaga Soler.
What do you think? Do you identify any more marches?
Indeed the classic Spanish music (mostly from Andalucia) as well holy week music is present on all the songs. That is impressive.
You can also hear instruments used on the holy processions
@@Franarok That's amazing. Do you think you could mention some artist to check more music like this? Or maybe a link to a concert of music of the Holy Week? I'm in complete awe with this style of music and I would love to listen more of this
Finally!! I know I was listening to La Saeta when I entered graveyard of the peaks, I'm happy I'm not the only one who noticed! 💞
I really like the atmosphere within the game. The music is on point. Great job!
Love the consistency and deep tone of these tracks!
I finish this game today. Fantastic game. The true ending hooks a second title. Recomend to play this, especially metroidvania fans.
"Ten piaded" is the best and gives real goosebumps
Ten piedad* Spanish for "have mercy " what a cool name huh
A couple of electric guitars imitating bagpipes and screams.
@@pyrefly7575 I was weak. That's why I needed you... needed someone to punish me for my sins... but that's all over now...
Cantes de confesion is my favorite track in this game.
What an underrated game and soundtrack. Blasphemous needs more love 💕
Como siempre, Carlos Viola es GENIAL!
Masterpiece. It somehow remids the decadence of Diablo II. Beautiful, dark and twisted melodies, mixed with distant piano and flamenco guitar music. Awesome.
I cant believe I've waited this long after playing the game to actually listen to the OST on its own. It is fantastic, so brooding and dreamlike. I will definitely be putting this on in the background when I draw and paint😩👌
Bravo Composer!
58:33 tema de la pelea contra Melquiades
I brought the Deluxe Bundle and finished this game on the first day.
The Soundtrack was enough to buy that bundle, but the comic and artbook is even better.
This game fires on all cylinders. Absolutely incredible and metal as hell.
Just brilliant, you are Instant in the game atmosphere
"Tierras de Azafrán" is a masterpiece
Que calidad de juego y banda sonora perfección 🇪🇸
I really want another game like this.
a game called "the last faith" is coming out soon and the art style and gameplay look EXACTLY the same as blasphemous
crunchy thatmunchy yup I can’t wait :D
@@fareis19 saaaaame :)
You likely already know, but Blasphemous 2 is out, so you literally got your wish :P
This shit is what gets me up in the morning! To have a game soundtrack hype you up!!! This Spanish guitar!!!
Search youtube for these videos, you'll enjoy them: "Concierto Sueños de Guitarra. Sólo zapateado y Asturias de Isaac Albéniz", "Flamenco dance (1) in Granada 2015"
i like the fact that some musical patterns keep coming after a few minutes and blend with other songs
00:09:05 Un toque de misticismo que poco a poco va atrapandote
This soundtrack grew on me much, much more than I thought it would
このゲーム最近買って滅茶苦茶ハマってます!日本語の同士はおらんのか!?
三年越しだがいるぞここに👍
I have to Say this was One of the greatest soundtracks i've listened to in years.
BLasphemous Is a very beautiful game, the art compartment, visuals and sound, Is superb.
I love the depth of folklore and total environment design in this game. it reminds me of Vatican like, but it's in another universe.
This is definitly in my top ost from akira , apocalypse now to blade runner and more.... The game , music and ambiance are crazy
