Kura I felt your pain. I was blessed around 25yrs ago to travel on a medical mission to Peru for 2wks. So I decided to get my hair braided for the first time. It took forever and I literally left from getting my hair done to straight to the airport. The pain was unbelievable. Standing in the shower after arrival made the aim worst because of the additional weight from absorbing water. The women there was so warm and inviting. I had no idea that they also wore braids. I don’t know what serum they used on my head but I survived the rest of my stay because I wanted them to remove them. Sitting on dirt grounds in the mountains was the most memorable time of interacting with the people. I’ll never forget the love from the ladies. Sorry this text is so long but watching you today brought back beautiful and sad memories I wish I could share.
Wow what a life you've lead! Thats an amazing story about finding connection amoungt cultures as well as relating to women from another part of the world! ( I love when us women connect.) Shukura, to me you'll always be a fabulous lady, no matter what your hair or nails look like. It's in your attitude, in the way you talk, your interest in art and learning. Just the other day I saw a hairdresser (Belgian compatriot of mine) comment on a US courtcase about a woman whose hair was braided so tightly she actually got a huge bald patch! It's not worth it. On another note, I always enjoy your beautiful images of New York, and I always look forward to your next vlog. And this week's episode didn't disappoint at all.

Thank you so much for the small tour of the Harlem Renaissance exhibit at the MET, n ot from NYC but hopefully I’ll get to see it, maybe it will tour. I love learning history thru art, architecture and homes/home tours. You can learn so much about what was going on in the world, what people felt and valued and society deemed important thru what they painted, collected and how they lived.
I'm hoping it will tour as well. So many people need to see it! I learned so much and was truly in awe. Architecture is another topic that I want to learn about. I'm learning that art can transport you to anthor world and truly make you think about life differently. It makes me consider what other people vaule ,cherish, and how they look at the world. Art , like you said , helps me see what people deem inportant. It's like reading in so many ways. The right book can transport you in time and so can art! It's facinating! I have so much to learn!

I felt your pain, sis! That's one of the reasons I went relaxed.... Cornrows can be a walk through hell😆😆 One time, my Momma had to out my cousin's braids out AT CHURCH! Poor child kept squirming on her seat.... One thing with hairstylist is this: if Fatima is the one, STICK with Fatima. I also enjoyed the walk through the museum.... Like most of us I’ve also been getting my hair braided since I was a girl. One year ago I tried a new braided, got corn rows and had to take them down the next day. The pain was too much for my head on the pillow. I’ve never cried over hair but I did that night. I so felt your feelings and experience 😢 On a lighter note I was also the little girl in the white rabbit coat! Thanks for making me smile 😊

Absolutly! When I was to teaching 10th graders I had a whole unit on Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston! Fun times, the kids loved it. I secretly did it for myself lol!

Gurl I know your pain! The last time I got my hair braided in Harlem I swear I had a face lift. I gave it 3 days and just couldn’t take it anymore, they had to come out. This was about 30 years ago and I remember the pain clearly. I’m going to the MET next weekend to check out the exhibit. Happy Birthday🎉🎉. I loved your video.

The Harlem Renaissance vlog was amazing. Loved the section on furs. That’s a whole thing in my family. We would be so excited when one of our relatives got a new fur. I remember one year my uncle got my aunt a navy blue Fox jacket with a hood. I was about 12 but that coat is still in my thoughts!

Honey I too have felt that pain. I know what you mean you mean about the Tylenol, water and steam trying to help. You tried all the tricks I would have tried. Sorry you had to take them out. That said, if you slip those scarf tails to just one side and add a nice red or orange lip you would look fabulous with your sunglasses. Don’t knock the scarf and sunnies look. Women have worn the look decade after decade for a reason. It’s classic and elegant looking. ❤
You have a point about the scarf! I didn't wear the red lip ( I shold have ) But I did get a few compilments when I was out! The girls said that it was super cute and now I have to reuvaluate.😂 I was absouluty wrong.🤷🏾♀️ I did have on a pair of oversized balck glasses though!

I get it my dear, I once was in Cartagena and had my hair braided as well, I couldn’t sleep, eat and I had to unbraid on the following day! Horrible experience and since then I can’t bring myself to have braids again 🤦🏽♀️

I did the same thing back the 90s. I wanted my hair to look just like that girl on that show with Queen Latifah. I think it’s called living single. Anyway, I lived in Harlem. I went to an African salon in Harlem to get that style came home ,Could not sleep at all had a headache horrible. I think it was that same night took those things out and I don’t have any regrets. Don’t care how much money you spend and I learned my lesson and. As we old folks say, ain’t no sense like bought sense!!!!❤
I had an experience like that before. It felt like my hair follicles were fused together. I didn’t last 24 hours. I wept. I’m triggered lol! I hope you never have pain like that again!

Happy birthday!!! If you hadn’t told me I’d just assumed you wanted to wear a scarf! You always look fabulous and we would never judge. Video was great! I enjoyed the MET. Something similar happened to me. I was very vocal about tightness of a weave so she made adjustments. But something about the last track she laid down its like she pulled it all in unison so tight! It was very expensive and gorgeous and I went back to get some thread snipped before heading out of town for a wedding. But when I got back I had it uninstalled. The new stylist kept asking if I was sure because it looked GOODT but hurt so bad despite the oil ands snipped threads. I unfortunately experienced hair lost and never wore a weave again.

I've been to the Met Museum! It's fantastic! Loved the trip, Kura. Fashion and Art go hand in hand! I will not be very surprised if you start collecting art pieces for your home in the future. Then imagine sleeping with them!😳 it was a terrible pain! 🤦🏾♀️ I wish I knew how they get the braids so small.😂 it takes a lot of skill and practice I assume. However, getting them out is just a matter of unbraiding them as you would with any big braid. Some folks use a comb to get in between each strand to help loosen the braid and it takes forever!😂 I did see the Green Book! What a great movie! Have a wonderful week friend!❤️

Lady ,you were too brave withstanding that braided hair... I have had this experience and to me the only other thing that compares in throwing me into panic and hyperventilating is having being stuck in clothing that is too tight ,that has to come off from over the head...we live and we learn... The outfit recreation were quite appealing to me.

I had cornrows as a kid, done by my late aunt (pain free) -- but as an adult, I simply do not have the patience or pain tolerance. But the styles are beautiful and convenient, so I understand. Our attention spans are much shorter than they used to be because of IG and Tik Tok etc.. So as soon as a viewer gets bored of one topic they can move on to the next .(Thats why I have time stamps in the description box) similar to how a fashion magazine or show has different topics in one magazine or show. I completely understand where you are coming from though! I have even contemplated doing a second video a week with one topic .So I get it! ☺️❤️ It would actually make my life easier lol!

Sorry to hear about your horrible hair branding experience. I found my braiding lady. Shouts out to Tuli. She braids all my daughters too. Last born not there yet because she is super tender headed. She does not pull or anything though. In fact I always feel like she’s playing in my head while she’s braiding because I feel nothing. It feels like a message actually.😂

Girl! Wigs are so much fun. Why aren't you taking advantage of the convenience of a wig. I have over a hundred wigs. I am a different girl every day. I also hit that gym every day. I show up to work looking like I just left the salon.
I've tried wigs! I can't get mine to look good!😩 I'm also a horrible braider so my wig sat way on top of my head. I looked like I was in a Tyler Perry play.😂 I wish I knew how to work with them. Maybe it's a skill I can work on because something has to happen.😩 I have to go to the gym.🤷🏾♀️
I took some braids I got done the next day the amount of hair that was coming out my edges let me know I made the right decision thankfully I took pics if what was happening and was able to get a FULL REFUND after I told them I would be using them in my google review
I was so afraid for my edges! They were the part that hurt the most! I'm lucky to still have them but girl! I would have been hot if my edges fell out! I'm strong contemplating going back for a refund or some type of copmensation. They have my money and my hair STILL isnt done smh....
I have been contemplating sister locks for a few years now. My mother, my aunt, my sister-in-law and my niece all have them and they are gorgeous! I just want my edges and some hair freedom you know?🤷🏽♀️
@@simplykura I get it…I couldn’t afford sister locks and so I plotted 146 of own locks 22years ago and for most of that time I have self maintained. I love them because my time and $$ are freed up.

I love you wearing what u did in your 2010 pictures. How luxurious to be able to wear fur. Am so bored of seeing ppl wearing safe, generic colors; no individuality. It was actually the bright citrus-colored outfit on thumbnail that drew me. Doesn’t it just tittilate you?…They braided it too tight! It looked great tho. YEa, they can do it too tight. I agree, it seems that everyone is wearing the same things! What happen to colorful fun outfits and individually. Social Media has made us all look like clones. They were just too too tight. Some braiders dont know how to gauge the balance. braids like that take 3 to 4 days to settle. When its just normal tight. Your stuff was beyond. I feel your pain.
Kura I felt your pain. I was blessed around 25yrs ago to travel on a medical mission to Peru for 2wks. So I decided to get my hair braided for the first time. It took forever and I literally left from getting my hair done to straight to the airport. The pain was unbelievable. Standing in the shower after arrival made the aim worst because of the additional weight from absorbing water. The women there was so warm and inviting. I had no idea that they also wore braids. I don’t know what serum they used on my head but I survived the rest of my stay because I wanted them to remove them. Sitting on dirt grounds in the mountains was the most memorable time of interacting with the people. I’ll never forget the love from the ladies. Sorry this text is so long but watching you today brought back beautiful and sad memories I wish I could share.

Just the other day I saw a hairdresser (Belgian compatriot of mine) comment on a US courtcase about a woman whose hair was braided so tightly she actually got a huge bald patch! It's not worth it.

Thank you so much for the small tour of the Harlem Renaissance exhibit at the MET, n ot from NYC but hopefully I’ll get to see it, maybe it will tour. I love learning history thru art, architecture and homes/home tours. You can learn so much about what was going on in the world, what people felt and valued and society deemed important thru what they painted, collected and how they lived.
I'm hoping it will tour as well. So many people need to see it! I learned so much and was truly in awe. Architecture is another topic that I want to learn about. I'm learning that art can transport you to anthor world and truly make you think about life differently. It makes me consider what other people vaule ,cherish, and how they look at the world. Art , like you said , helps me see what people deem inportant. It's like reading in so many ways. The right book can transport you in time and so can art! It's facinating! I have so much to learn!

I felt your pain, sis! That's one of the reasons I went relaxed.... Cornrows can be a walk through hell😆😆 One time, my Momma had to out my cousin's braids out AT CHURCH! Poor child kept squirming on her seat.... One thing with hairstylist is this: if Fatima is the one, STICK with Fatima.

Like most of us I’ve also been getting my hair braided since I was a girl. One year ago I tried a new braided, got corn rows and had to take them down the next day. The pain was too much for my head on the pillow. I’ve never cried over hair but I did that night. I so felt your feelings and experience 😢 On a lighter note I was also the little girl in the white rabbit coat! Thanks for making me smile 😊

The Harlem Renaissance is one of my favorite art periods and I enjoy literature, as well.
Absolutly! When I was to teaching 10th graders I had a whole unit on Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston! Fun times, the kids loved it. I secretly did it for myself lol!

Gurl I know your pain! The last time I got my hair braided in Harlem I swear I had a face lift. I gave it 3 days and just couldn’t take it anymore, they had to come out. The Harlem Renaissance vlog was amazing. Loved the section on furs. That’s a whole thing in my family. We would be so excited when one of our relatives got a new fur. I remember one year my uncle got my aunt a navy blue Fox jacket with a hood. I was about 12 but that coat is still in my thoughts!

Honey I too have felt that pain. I know what you mean you mean about the Tylenol, water and steam trying to help. You tried all the tricks I would have tried. Sorry you had to take them out. That said, if you slip those scarf tails to just one side and add a nice red or orange lip you would look fabulous with your sunglasses. Don’t knock the scarf and sunnies look. Women have worn the look decade after decade for a reason. It’s classic and elegant looking. ❤
You have a point about the scarf! I didn't wear the red lip ( I shold have ) But I did get a few compilments when I was out! The girls said that it was super cute and now I have to reuvaluate.😂 I was absouluty wrong.🤷🏾♀️ I did have on a pair of oversized balck glasses though!

I get it my dear, I once was in Cartagena and had my hair braided as well, I couldn’t sleep, eat and I had to unbraid on the following day! Horrible experience and since then I can’t bring myself to have braids again 🤦🏽♀️

I did the same thing back the 90s. I wanted my hair to look just like that girl on that show with Queen Latifah. I think it’s called living single. Anyway, I lived in Harlem. I went to an African salon in Harlem to get that style came home ,Could not sleep at all had a headache horrible. I think it was that same night took those things out and I don’t have any regrets. Don’t care how much money you spend and I learned my lesson and. As we old folks say, ain’t no sense like bought sense!!!!❤
I had an experience like that before. It felt like my hair follicles were fused together. I didn’t last 24 hours. I wept. I’m triggered lol! I hope you never have pain like that again!

Happy birthday!!! If you hadn’t told me I’d just assumed you wanted to wear a scarf! You always look fabulous and we would never judge. Video was great! I enjoyed the MET. Something similar happened to me. I was very vocal about tightness of a weave so she made adjustments. But something about the last track she laid down its like she pulled it all in unison so tight! It was very expensive and gorgeous and I went back to get some thread snipped before heading out of town for a wedding. But when I got back I had it uninstalled. The new stylist kept asking if I was sure because it looked GOODT but hurt so bad despite the oil ands snipped threads. I unfortunately experienced hair lost and never wore a weave again.

First, you are disappearing on us! You look so great. Second, you looked great with the corn rows. You have the face that could get away with anything. But I can't imagine the pain. How do they get them that tiny!!?!?! How do they get them out!? Holy cow. I get a headache when my pony tail is too tight. Third, the Harlem art was incredible. Imagine a bunch of tight tiny pony tales all over your head . Then imagine sleeping with them!😳 it was a terrible pain! 🤦🏾♀️
I wish I knew how they get the braids so small.😂 it takes a lot of skill and practice I assume. However, getting them out is just a matter of unbraiding them as you would with any big braid. Some folks use a comb to get in between each strand to help loosen the braid and it takes forever!😂

@@simplykura Well that sounds painful! When I was in St. Thomas, some ladies on the beach tried to get me to get my hair braided. I knew that I'd look like ridiculous. I can't even imagine!

Lady ,you were too brave withstanding that braided hair... I have had this experience and to me the only other thing that compares in throwing me into panic and hyperventilating is having being stuck in clothing that is too tight ,that has to come off from over the head...we live and we learn...
The outfit recreation were quite appealing to me.
I have most certainly learned my lesson! Never Again! 😩 I agree , being s tuck in tight clothing will make me lose it! I will cut the darn thing off if I have to!😂

Sorry about the pain you had to endure. I had the same experience for my first cornrow and as a result I hardly braid my hair.
So many of us have had this experince.😩 There is no pain like it. I am very hesitant about getting my hair briaded again so I understand why you don't. It's all to much.😔

Hi Shukura, I literally could feel the pain you were feeling. How awful. I had cornrows as a kid, done by my late aunt (pain free) -- but as an adult, I simply do not have the patience or pain tolerance. But the styles are beautiful and convenient, so I understand. Hi Kura, I absolutely love your videos - they really feel like I'm watching a video fashion magazine, however have you thought about breaking each video up into 3 separate videos? I just feel like it could be easier for viewers to watch each section separately especially when it isn’t convenient to watch the whole video in one sitting.

I actually started doing segmented videos because it holds people attention longer according to my youtube analytics. Our attention spans are much shorter than they used to be because of IG and Tik Tok etc.. So as soon as a viewer gets bored of one topic they can move on to the next .(Thats why I have time stamps in the description box) similar to how a fashion magazine or show has different topics in one magazine or show.
I completely understand where you are coming from though! I have even contemplated doing a second video a week with one topic .So I get it! ☺️❤️ It would actually make my life easier lol!

@@simplykura yes, I experienced pain after getting braids and thought the same way. Got in the shower thinking the steam would loosen my braids and it made it worse. I took mines out as well.

Sorry to hear about your horrible hair branding experience. I found my braiding lady. Shouts out to Tuli. She braids all my daughters too. Last born not there yet because she is super tender headed. She does not pull or anything though. In fact I always feel like she’s playing in my head while she’s braiding because I feel nothing. It feels like a message actually.😂

Happy Sunday Kura, I’m sorry you experienced that with the braids but happy your husband is a fixer because and told you to remove the braids because that could damage your hair follicles. Your hair is too beautiful for that.
I was terrified that I was going to lose my edges.😩 I'm so gratful that my husband had the foresight to tell me to take them out. I thought he was being bossy at the time but he was right. (this one time 😂)

Every time I think about the installation AND the takedown it stops me right in my tracks. I don’t know if it’s because I am older😂. Anyway, I hope your next braids feel better.❤

Girl! Wigs are so much fun. Why aren't you taking advantage of the convenience of a wig. I have over a hundred wigs. I am a different girl every day. I also hit that gym every day. I show up to work looking like I just left the salon.
I've tried wigs! I can't get mine to look good!😩 I'm also a horrible braider so my wig sat way on top of my head. I looked like I was in a Tyler Perry play.😂 I wish I knew how to work with them. Maybe it's a skill I can work on because something has to happen.😩 I have to go to the gym.🤷🏾♀️

I took some braids I got done the next day the amount of hair that was coming out my edges let me know I made the right decision thankfully I took pics if what was happening and was able to get a FULL REFUND after I told them I would be using them in my google review
I was so afraid for my edges! They were the part that hurt the most! I'm lucky to still have them but girl! I would have been hot if my edges fell out! I'm strong contemplating going back for a refund or some type of copmensation. They have my money and my hair STILL isnt done smh....

I have been contemplating sister locks for a few years now. My mother, my aunt, my sister-in-law and my niece all have them and they are gorgeous! I just want my edges and some hair freedom you know?🤷🏽♀️
@@simplykura I get it…I couldn’t afford sister locks and so I plotted 146 of own locks 22years ago and for most of that time I have self maintained. I love them because my time and $$ are freed up.

I realized long ago braids aren’t for me. They always hurt. If they weren’t so tight they did look nice on you. You didn’t look like a toad. Lol.

Braids are so convenient but when it’s time to put them in and take them out and if they hurt, it’s a whole other thing! I have got to figure something out!!😩

It was actually the bright citrus-colored outfit on thumbnail that drew me. Doesn’t it just tittilate you?…They braided it too tight! It looked great tho. YEa, they can do it too tight. I agree, it seems that everyone is wearing the same things! What happen to colorful fun outfits and individually. Social Media has made us all look like clones. They were just too too tight. Some braiders dont know how to gauge the balance. braids like that take 3 to 4 days to settle. When its just normal tight. Your stuff was beyond. I feel your pain.
No amount of beauty is worth a lot of pain. Sorry you had to go through that. My head is hurting in sympathy.
