- As we continue our epic road trip around the world we continue down through Croatia, visiting the coastal town of Trogir before crossing into our first non EU Country - Bosnia. Our first experience of Vanlife in Bosnia, we visit Mostar before heading south.
This is by far the most challenging OVERLANDING VANLIFE Adventure travel series that we have ever done (and possibly on youtube) one that will definitely change us for ever more. Driving around the world is going to be both a physical and mental challenge and one that will test us to the limit.

During our move to Turkey in 1967, we drove down the coast of what was then Yugoslavia. One night while we camped , we experienced a bad windstorm. We couldn't even set up our tents. So the 6 of us including grandmother all tried to sleep in the VW van. Some were lucky to sleep on the seats and others on the floor. In the morning my mother made us some scrambled eggs, and the wind just blew them off our plates !! And this was in August , and I see you had some nice weather during the winter.
Wow that sounds like a great adventure and created lots of memories, We were very lucky with the weather the sun seemed to follow us !
So wonderful to see Shepherds out there! The quiet innocence of the world is being reunited with my soul through you sharing your journey! I still believe that “most” of the world is still good and we just don’t see it unless someone shares it! Thank you!

I'll throw in here an ultra quick course to ease your pronunciation in Slavic languages. Because you'll encounter a lot of those in your journeys east. This are some rules for those on Balkan peninsula, although they are valid more or less for other Slavic languages you'll encounter on your way (no matter the alphabet in use). Cyrillic has the same letters, just written differently +/- a few new.
Č = ch
Ć = same as "Č", just a bit softer
Š = sh
Ž = zh (like in "vision" or "usual")
Đ = combination of letters D and Ž (pronounced like "John")
Letters which are the same, but can sound differently in English words:
I = Always pronounced like double "ee" - Beer. Never like - "I" in "I am"
R = Always sharp pronunciation (Like Italians would say "pRonto" or like in ApRil)
A = Always sounds as A in America (in every single worth!)
C = Always pronounced as "ts". Like Tsar (Car), or Tsaritsa (CariCa), or Tsunami (Cunami) - Never like C in "CoCaCola".
U = Always as double "oo" in English (Boots). So village "Hum" is pronounced "Hoom".
G = Always like G in "Grape" and never like G in "General"
J = is basically the letter "y" (like in worth "youth" - never pronounced like in the name "John")
H = is never quiet!

I’ve been catching up with your old videos - hey there’s lockdown 3 so we need some uplift. Can’t help but comment on this one. Croatia/Montenegro/Slovenia all beautiful and I’m sure Serbia is also however Bosnia. What can one say: I will never forget seeing those images of people suffering in 1995 in the news. And it’s evident when you drive into Bosnia the difference in surroundings: more rugged landscape, less plush housing and everything is cheaper especially the petrol. However what strikes me are the people who are warm, friendly and hospitable. We went to Mostar when we went to Croatia and sat at a restaurant overlooking the iconic bridge built by the Ottomans and had the lovely yaprak dolma - the chef was proud to say that it was passed on from the Turks. I loved the food you ate at that lovely restaurant also. 🙏🙏🙏Bosnia xxx

Amazing video...weapons??? It reminds me in 1988 ...in East Berlin...at the checkpoint Charlie...the East german police agent in the border asked the same to me...and i said to him yes i got a weapon..my mind is my weapon...as a result of that i got to come back to West Germany...and wait a week before try again to enter to East Germany...which i finally did...kind regards...😀🤗🤗

It s standard procedure to ask . Police ask you if u say no but you have weapons, they will go for much more,details. Poent is to be honest .

When I was a kid dogs barking was the only thing that would keep me awake but I got used to it in time. I suppose its the advantage of having always lived in noisy housing estates. At this stage if I lived in a quiet place I probably wouldn't sleep. I'd think I was gone deaf 😅

On the bridge it says it was built in 1921 by local people and help from some guy named Peter Pero Ivanishevisch (the king at that time?) in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croatians and Slovenes - SHS (it was a prercursor to Yugoslavia)

Have you learned if the Bulgaria - Turkish border is open? What's the alternative if you can't cross? Head north and visit Finland? :-) Around the world via the polar route might make some great video! Sorry to make jokes, but it's best to laugh in the face of adversity. Best wishes.

In Montenegro you have to legally book in to a hotel / accommodation to get registered ... so we used a lovely hostel in Kotor 😍💕🙌🚐 best wishes Marianne xx

Hi - We decided a route based on time of year / weather .... and visa duration ..... We do a financial blog (you can check this out on our website - www.treadtheglobe.com) that shows our income and as long as we don't spend more on fuel / food / visas etc we drive ... if we get low on funds we stop for a couple of weeks to save up some money. you got buggered,,,,,5 pounds for 1 portion of cevapi,,,that is about 7 euro,,,,,10 euro is 70 kuna....it kinda means you paid about 50 kuna for a portion of cevapi,,,,that is double what everyone pays

Hi Carin - the UK MOT is only valid for the countries that you are insured with, on your UK insurance certificate - so in our case Europe - once we get out of Europe it is no longer valid - so any country you have to buy insurance ... Bosnia, Albania, North Macedonia, etc green card office have not asked us for an MOT .... we have shown our owners document and passports .... but so far no one is interested in the British certificate of MOT as it is not relevant to their country xx I hope this helps - Marianne xx

Hi - we have an arrangement in the van ... we do and live the way we want to .... and I love driving and hate filming / editing ... and Chris loves filming and editing ! each video takes about 8-10 hours to make for you. So I drive and he edits !! if he drives then there are no videos as I hate filming LOL 😂💪💃💐 ps he also says I am a better driver LOL !!

Hi we passed through so we did not stay longer than 72 hours - but if you do - register with a local police station (or pop in and ask their advice) or book into a hostel before day 3 - Happy Travels - Marianne
