    In this project I will show you how I combined an Arduino Nano, an LCD, a rotary encoder, three peristaltic pumps with motor drivers, a load cell and a couple pieces of wood to create a crude, but functional Cocktail Machine. Along the way I will demonstrate how peristaltic pumps work and in which way they can work with the other components in order to pump a precise amount of liquid.

    A suggested upgrade: after dispensing each ingredient, run the pump in reverse for a few seconds, to empty the portion remaining in the tube.

      Another idea; to save some cost in favor of preparation speed might be using just one pump and distribute the ingredients through the tubes with valves.

    Just a tip, pre drill your holes in the timber, you have a pillar drill. Perfect nails, no splits and you control where the nail goes. Same as electronics, provide a path of least resistance and the nail will follow

    Thank you. Very interesting demo with professional work. Different constituents can be placed at top and gravity fed into the bottom container. The flow of different constituents can be changed automatically using solenoid valves placed in the discharge line of upper tanks.The load cell can weigh cumulatively and stop in the end.

    I saw a group of 4th year engineering students did a similar project to this for their capstone project. Cool!
    Theirs worked a bit differently in that I think all tubes could run at the same time, no weight sensor. They also added an auto cup dispenser and conveyor for coolness factor.

    Brilliant! For my senior capstone project in college I made a similar system, but it was gravity fed rather than peristaltic pumps. Ours had a fancy QR code based ordering system and inventory management though. I always wondered if we should have gone the peristaltic route, and it looks much cleaner and easier to manage/control

    One idea to add variety to your drinks is to use solenoid valves to control from where the pumps are sucking, this way you wouldn't need as many pumps and the valves are definitely cheaper.
    Edit: Thinking again, maybe using the valves wouldn't be such a good idea for food safety.

    the scale measures mass not volume so liquids with different viscosities will give different volumes. you could have one pump and a distributor that changes the liquid being pumped (plus some valves and that way you could have maybe 10 liquids and only one pump , plus you could do a flush to the pipes after each liquid was pumped)

  • @john_thorpe

    A few things I’d do is redesign the whole thing and design it like this:
    1. Find or make some sealed dispenser bins (something like 3” wide, 9” deep and 10” tall or something the size of the dispenser area would be that’ll hold like a half to full bottle of Bacardi, etc) sloped to the center for the tube connection, that has a sealed, but removable lid for filling/cleaning. This would prevent fruit flies, etc and can be left filled.
    2. Have 4 or 6 on each side of the dispenser part (in the middle) that way you can have one for jack, Bacardi, crown royal, bourbon, triple sec, etc. I’d put a thin black piece of material between each bin with a light smoke front panel in front of all of them and put a white led light above each one. When a drink is selected that uses Bacardi (for example) the light above the Bacardi would light up and you can see it through the front panel. So the ingredients being used lights up.
    3. Have a flip up lid over the ingredients bins for filling etc.
    4. Have more drink recipes, and include a multi line lcd panel for instructions. For example for a margarita, when selected it would say something like place a shaker filled with ice in the dispenser area, then after it dispenses it would tell you to shake and strain, or place in a blender and pulse, etc.
    5. A sensor to detect a glass, etc is in the dispenser area to prevent dispensing without one.
    6. Move the electronics into a false back that’s covered to keep them from getting wet, and replace it with a pull out drip tray under the dispenser for spills, over dispensing, etc.
    7. Have a selection for size of glass, example for a Long Island iced tea, you can tell it that your using a 6 oz glass and it’ll adjust the portions for that size glass, or using a 12 oz glass, it’d adjust for that.
    8. Keep the multi color led lights for the dispenser area.
    9. Make a port where you can plug in a computer for servicing/updates via a usb cable, etc to make it easier for updates, etc if needed instead of pulling off the back, etc.
    10. Glue the black plastic sheets you used on rather than screwing them on and maybe use a silver metal corner piece to put over the corners.
    11. Put rubber feet on the bottom to protect the surface you put the automatic bartender on.
    12. An option of selecting drink strength from no alcohol, little, moderate to strong... depending on the persons taste.
    Just a few things I thought of to take the concept to the next level.
    Oh and of course google Home/Alexa integration.

    Hey GreatScott!
    I have a project idea for you: Modify a PSU to be constant current source.
    I think if you remove the feedback from the output and add a small resistor(current shunt?) to the low side, it could provide a feedback. This should be amplified to the appropriate level and voila CC PSU.
    I didn't think this through, but I think this could be done, with your knowledge.
    Would be useful to drive leds, even many in series, since the voltage could go above 12V.
    What do you think?
    Cheers

    instead of using a timer you could have used the strain gauge measure the weight?

    • @meclucas
      @meclucas Před 6 lety

      He could, but I don't think it would work as well as it does with the timer. The problem here is that the load cell produces a low signal that is susceptible to noise, in order to read a stable signal you must use some form of filtering, which will decrease the response time of the load cell, so he wouldn't be able to measure the amount of liquid poured in real time.

    • @greatscottlab
      @greatscottlab  Před 6 lety +3

      Yes, that would have also worked. But the problem was that due to the vibrations the measurements were a bit off.

      I'm not sure what you're referring to, but you can't use the electrical current flowing through a liquid to measure the flow rate. To do that would require either a turbine in the pipe or something else that can be measured electronically which is not practical on this scale

    • @Rostol
      @Rostol Před 6 lety +1

      Algorhythm no, you can do it. It is called magnetic flow meter. Or mag meter. It requires a conductive liquid. The problem here is that it requires a known conductivity on the liquids. Which would mean recalibration after each new liquid is used.

    • @MrDaniyalAh
      @MrDaniyalAh Před 6 lety +10

    Suggestion: When you drill into wood, Drill from the hidden side and also have another wood piece under the piece you are drilling. That way when material is pulled up the hidden side will have ugly sides(Because of wood pulled up) and the good side will have a nice hole because the wood piece it is against will prevent sides from separating on the sides. If you need both sides pretty, then sandwich the piece you are drilling between two other wood pieces and then drill.

    I think instead of recording pumping periods and adjusting poured material's volume accordingly, knowing the densities of the liquids and adjusting the poured amount making use of the strain gauge sensor would be wiser. Second, but a piece of scrap wood under the piece you want drill. It should keep the good piece from blowing out. Love you work!

    thats a very cool idea but the only problem i see is cleaning it after use as im quite sure mold would build up within a couple of days if not cleaned manually. The only thing I could think of is after its done dispensing the drink if there was a clean cycle say using water that would push the water though the tubes to clean. other then that its very cool :)
