Lovely rendition; grew up there; live in Japan now - and GN was a place unto itself

My mother lived in Great Neck in the late 1940s. Went to school there with her brother. Her father was a diplomat representing the Netherlands working at the UN in NYC.

When I stayed with family in Great Neck from the late 1980's to the mid 2000's I noticed that the railroad people really tried to come in and out of the city was the border town of Great Neck, Little Neck Train Station. That was where you could hear the train go by for the most part but sooooo many people desired to live off the main streets there because you could come and go into Manhattan without the pile ups of the cars in the lots. I do not know if anyone ranked one public transit over the other but I did see so many people coming through there as a short cut into Great Neck once they got off the trains. I remember Great Neck had a big coffee culture back in 2000 where everyone wanted to catch up with each other at the Starbucks or the Bakery. I had some nice visits there for sure.

I lived in Great Neck from 1964 to 1979. We were poor and lived at the Academy Garden Apartments at 800 Middle Neck Road until 1973. It was the only place in town lower income people could afford to live. So I experienced Great Neck from a different perspective than most other residents.
I have lots of stories but I'll tell just one. When I was 12, a friend and I went to visit a schoolmate living on Florence Street. It was a hot and humid day.
As the three of us stood in my friends backyard, his mother came out carrying a tray with three tall glasses on it. Two of the glasses were filled with lemonade and they were served to my two friends. I was served last and my glass was filled with only water. His mother said "Sorry, maybe next time" with an insincere grin.
I told her I wasn't thirsty and left. That was one of my experiences living in Great Neck.

Historical Society has only scratched the surface. Surprised they did not mention the Grist Mill built in 1600's or the many famous persons who have lived in GN.

Great has a lot of good points but sadly, the Village and GN Plaza are in decline. Too many empty storefronts, & riding along Middle Neck Road is somewhat depressing.

Asians have displaced the Iranians. The town has lost its friendliness. It has become ultra expensive to live in.

It seems like that is the way globalization works. Asians are everywhere because they don't have to repay their loans back thanks to our fabulous Presidents!
