Green Bay vs. New England (Super Bowl XXXI, 1996) Green Bay's Greatest Games

- In this classic from 1996, Brett Favre and the NFC's Packers take on Drew Bledsoe and the AFC's Patriots for the 31st iteration of the Super Bowl. Green Bay got of to a fast start thanks to a 54 yard touchdown from Favre to WR Andre Rison and a FG from Chirs Jacke. But New England battled back, and took a 14-10 lead at the end of the first. An 81 yard touchdown from Favre to Antonio Freeman gave Green Bay the lead right back in what was then the longest play in Super Bowl history, and the Packers extended that lead to 27-14 right before half on a Favre touchdown run. New England attempted a comeback in the 3rd as Curtis Martin rumbled in for a score, cutting the lead to 6, but Desmond Howard returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for the touchdown on the game's signature play and Green Bay converted the 2 point conversion to give them a commanding 35-21 lead, which would ultimately be the final score. Howard earned MVP honors, Favre threw for 246 with three total touchdowns and Reggie White set a Super Bowl record with 3 sacks.

Packers were probably the most complete team ever that year. Number 1 offense, number 1 defense, and number 1 special teams. You can’t get any better than the 1996 Packers.
Plus MVP favre, only if we had Sterling too
had Farve been less of a gunslinger and more into td/int ratio, i think we'd been 15-1 or 16-0 that season... very hard to not lose a few games here and there under Brett.... but anyhow just an amazing assemblage of depth, teamwork, and dedication.
Dallas 1993
Yeah, I was just talking to someone about that year. 13-3 just like in 2019....but it sure wasn't the same!!!! That team was dominant and 2019 was a team of lucky fraudsters.
@Brandon Castle Percy had his one moment xD
3 sacks by a single player in a super bowl deserved to get MVP, but 244 return yards in a single game, let alone in a super bowl, is insane.
Facts
Green Bay had 3 MVPs that game. Farve: 3 TD (2 pass, 1 Rush) and a 2-pt conversion; White 3 sacks and a handful if hurries; Howard: 244 return yards, 1 TD.
Even without that TD, 145 return yards in a Super Bowl was still impressive
But that TD? Stuff of legends
Reggie made that right tackle look like a child.. although he only had 3 tackles, that was one of the most dominant defensive performances in SB history. RIP brother Reggie. We miss you
That man and his determination has not been matched to date
Reggie had 3 SACKS which if I remember correctly is still a Super Bowl record
I grew up in southern NH was in the fourth grade when this game happened. All I remember is it seemed like Reggie White sacked Bledsoe every play in the second half, lol.
@Joseph Van Horn it is true that he did play for philadelphia but he was traded to Green Bay because of his falling out with Buddy Ryan. Buddy had demanded that he injure opposing teams skill players and that's why he wanted to be traded.
@Joseph Van Horn do you even remember the bountygate game? Buddy Ryan was the head coach at the time before he took the job as defensive coordinator for the Houston Oilers. Reggie White was a part of the eagles during that time but didn't suit up for that game. As far as the owner wanting to move the team to the hottest place in the country it would have cost him a lot more than if he stayed.
I love watching these highlights. My name was drawn by the NFL that year for Super Bowl Tickets...took my Dad who was at the 1967 Ice Bowl. I still cry to this day when I watch highlights. GO PACK GO
Nothing against players today but this was when football was real
When men were men?
You could still tackle the QB back then too
Desmond Howard was a joy to watch. Simply incredible.
I'll tell you . Desmond Howard could probably still return punts for the Pack , even at his current age !! Even if he can't still run at his age , at least he'll catch the punt !!!Listen up GB , Special Teams !!! Are a HUGE part of the equation to win CHAMPIONSHIPS !!;
@@jski7355 shut up goofy
Man, took me back to when i was seeing this live with my family
Me too. My first superbowl I remember watching all the way through at 11 years old at the time
It was just me and my brother in his apartment. Awesome time.
@@ImGoingSupersonic I wasn’t even born. The best time
After being in attendance at SB 2 in Miami , I nwver thought I'd have to be patient for nearly 3 decades to get back to a SB
And Brette was overlooked. Wtf?
I'll never forget this... Battled drug addiction and alcoholism for over 10 years and decided to get clean and sober Jan 1 1997. I lived with several roomates all were still partying hard (and most still do lol) but I went through major DT's and depression and didn't go to superbowl party with them. I watched this alone, sober learning who I was as a sober Christian (Lucifer/demons were my god prior). Never looked back. Couple hurdles first year but I love life, clean sober and love people...
God bless you
this game would have been riddled with unsportsmanlike flags in todays game...
I count eight unsportsmanlike flags
Think about all the brain injuries that went uncalled. Now think of every one of those players stuck in a dark room because they are sensitive to light.
Damn Adam vinateiri played in this super bowl!
Hell yeah, he is the unsung hero on the Patriots. Everyone only talks about Brady this and Brady that but this dude kicked THREE SB WINNING FGS!!!!!
Andy Lam super bowl 39? Where?
@@user-co1gi7yd2r super bowl 37, 38, and 39
Heero6 what game winning field goal in supee bowl 39?
@@user-co1gi7yd2r my bad, i got it mixed up; it was just 36 and 38
This is my first Super Bowl that I have watched in my life.
Haha my first was Rams and Titans
This was my first Super Bowl that I watched the entire game. I was 6. I broke my moms vanity with a pillow when Desmond Howard returned that kick for a TD and hated the Packers for years because of this game
55 my first
Damn...mine was Bears/Pats
@Thomas Sankara nice- that was a good one. That was played in Indianapolis, about 90 miles from where I live. Eli and the Giants always had the Patriots number lol. Stay safe out there and my best to you and your fam.
The 82 yard go-ahead TD to Freeman in the second quarter is beautiful. 2:58
Perfectly executed
I don’t remember freeman being that fast. He was flying
Interesting fact about this team. Andre Rison had a terrible memory and if you watch every huddle Favre had to tell Rison the play if he was intended receiver. The touchdown he scored on was an audible and the reason why Favre was so happy was actually because he was shocked Rison ran the route that he was supposed to. And Rison guessed the route.
Auburn Wild that’s actually pretty cool
Where did you get this info?
He called Razor like Montana did. Rison just got open and Farve just blasted it.
Rison wasn't the sharpest crayon in the box but he was a late acquisition by the Pack .Much like OBJ going to the Rams this past year . Some players are just so naturally gifted with extraordinary skills that
Rison was playing like a house on fire 🔥🔥🔥. 😂
This is how football is supposed to be played
I think all Packer fans recognize, we are a bit different. I was in 4th grade, my whole family watched this together. I remember my uncle jumping out of the couch and hitting his head on the ceiling, when Freeman caught that TD. "Reggie got him again!!" Love it !! GO PACK GO!!!!
And it’s unfortunate that Favre only got this one ring when many probably thought he had more in him
Man I miss watching Reggie White play. He was so dominant. Him and Lawrence Taylor are the best defensive players to play the game.
Yeah, gotta give it to Taylor, but Reggie is definitely top 3.
Top 3 Reggie, LT and Ray Lewis
Often overlooked and sadly gone before his time , if he played on a winning team , Junior Seau would get a mention . Not s LT or RW but ..
They sure were the best. Reggie and Lawrence got Superbowls for their teams.
Let's not forget to mention a guy named Bruce Smith....
I was 13. Missed a week of school. And I watched this sick as a dawg. Go Pack!
At least your Packers won. Hopefully you recovered quickly.
Desmond Howard
Super Bowl 31 MVP 🏟
Love it! I was a new Packer fan at the beginning of the Favre era and never looked back. GO PACK GO!
Little did we all know that Favre would never get another ring after this
Seems like the team just couldn’t get over the hump in the playoffs again
I feel history has repeated itself with Rodgers and the team as well
@@RB01.10 yeah, it was most unfortunate for both, but I know that while there were some instances where both QBs fell short, there were several times where the defense or Special Teams cost them the playoffs, not either QB. After all, in a team sport, championships are won by teams, not single handedly by any lone individual. I wish people who put Brady on a pedestal understood that.
My first Super Bowl I ever watched made me a packers fan
Jacob Hawkins I was a Pats fan. Glad I stuck with them.
Brotherhood same bro
This made me a patriots fan
@@actorbradfordnorris You’re not the first one I’ve read that says that
I too feel that even though Brady and Belichick weren’t here, and the team not being a dynasty yet I feel this game paved the way
Really enjoying these videos! Would like to see more.
This is the game that I watched by accident w my dad and became a Favre fan and have since been a Packers fan💚💛
This game must’ve been really fun to watch back in 1997. I wasn’t born yet at the time.
After waiting nearly 30 years as a suffering GB fan , it all came together for the Pack that day
It was.
@@jski7355 exactly how I felt when the Saints finally wont the SB. It was literally a miracle in my eyes.
I was like 8 months old. I'm a Patriots fan, so I always thought it would be cool if they won this game and were Super Bowl champs in 96, the year I was born. Too bad, but still a great game.
Red Forman from That ‘70s and ‘90s Show would say that this is the best game he’s ever watched.
i was 8 years old going on 9 in July memories rip to my dad i was watching this game with him
So sorry for your loss 💔 glad you got to enjoy this Super Bowl championship with him
Bless you and the memories of your father. I bet he’s looking down right now proud of the man you’ve become
I was 7 going on 8 in October of that year. Johnny Bravo coming in July on Cartoon Network.
REGGIE WHITE RIP Beautiful to watch
Hey, its Terry Glenn! She was great!
Us older people will get why that is funny, right Parcells?
😆 😆 😆
She did ok for a rookie WR out of THE Ohio State
-2nd in NFLs ROTY voting
-90 receptions 1,100 yards and 7 touchdown receptions
8:43 The story behind that gesture by Parcells, I always wondered what he was doing there for years. What happened was that Holmgren, as he was being carried off the field, he saw Parcells and wanted to go and shake hands with him, which he always did with the opposing coach, win or lose. Parcells saw this and waved to Holmgren as if to say, "It's okay, go ahead and enjoy this."
Bledsoe should have been the packer mvp actually lol
You know he (Bledsoe) tried to shoot himself in the head after that game but the bullet was intercepted too!
Pat Summerall with the enthusiasm lol
You could have given the MVP to either Brett Favre, Reggie White, or Desmond Howard
It honestly should have been Farve
Desmond Howard is the right choice. Before Howard's TD, NE had huge momentum swing. After Howard ran it in, Packers left NE in the dust.
@@Pccpy100% Agreed 👍
The fact that Desmond was dominate in the playoffs makes it more deserving. He almost singlehandedly beat San Francisco in the slop.
90’s football was so much better on the hits👏🏻👑
I wish we’d gotten this exact Super Bowl match later on with Brady and Rodgers.
Reggie white should've been mvp or co mvp
I’m sad Sterling Sharpe didn’t make it to Super Bowl Glory with his team due to career ending injury :/
Andre Rison was so good with the Packers. He should have never left them.
They cut him when Robert Brooks returned to the team. Or traded him but it was a team decision, I'm sure Rison would've stayed, he was a good fit.
This SUPER bowl was a tough loss, but we more then made up for it, winning 6 SUPER BOWLS!!!!!!!! 6 TIME SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS!!!!!!!!HOW SWEET IT IS!!!!!
Richard Joubert #gopats!!!! 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆💍💍💍💍💍💍
Not as Sweet as 13 Time NFL Champions
These were the good old days.
I can see why he won the mvp
Damn I miss summerall and madden
My first grandson was born 1 yr before this. His family was over for the ballgame. When the packers won. I went nuts. Freaked him out
He went on the season ticket list
350lb Gilbert Brown, “you’re kind” haha Summerall was the best!
These highlights never get old
Man i am a Pats fan i love this game Bledsoe did it but when Reggie sack the QB dude this is amazing Pats defense were very good The Packers however they did it single handed (Reggie White). BEST PLAY: DESMOND HOWARD KICK RETURN
Man the good oh day's
The good ol' days....not good oh days...jesus christ
farve should of got more rings he is number one in my top qb
Cowboys owned him
Could have. Farve could have had about 5 SB appearances. Too bad he either fumbled or threw an interception for the L.
@@daveforz but he's still not. Romo 😂😆
@@daveforz he threw some costly interceptions in his career.
Elway was better, he got one from Brett, after this victory.
Greatest team ever!! RIP Reggie White🏆
Antonio Freeman was such a baller...
😍. World title number 12. What a great team. GO PACK GO BAY BAY
"So they can't really do anything against that dime defense..."
*Goes 80 yards for a touchdown*
What happened to the Pats that day happened to the Pack this year .Both cost their respective teams DEARLY . Breakdowns in Special Teams can deflate the morale of a team in a manner of seconds !!! Pats didn't help them selves with all the INTs thrown ,either . Those miscues wasted a terrific D performances .
2:06 one of the best catch and throws in Patriots history. Forgotten.
not even close
Packers stamped there name in football history as a tuff team to reckon with
This year 1996 you had Packers and the probably the best Basketball team ever the 96 Bulls. Great time for sports.
🇫🇷🇷🇺🇮🇹
Reggie has his SB Champs hat on with 50 seconds left in the game. LOL!!!!
What a GREAT TEAM!
this game was insane, so many splash plays
Lol Chris Jackie has place about a 1/2 mile down the road from me now. Bumped into him at the bar a couple times. Still has the same haircut 😂😂
Number one overall offense
Brett Favre at QB- 1996/97 NFL MVP
Number one overall defense
Reggie White-left defensive end
LeRoy Butler- strong Safety
Really can't overlook the BIG guys .Sean Jones , Gilbert , the " Grave digger " Brown .Santana " get me outta Tampa Bay " That D was one of the best in GB history . Wolf , got Jones , Dotson , Reggie , Gene Robinson .
Freeman was a phenomenal go to WR in Green Bay’s passing game
Go Pack Go! I was 20 years old in’96
Man they had fun that game.
Andre and the iconic duck walk!
I was there when I was only 4 years old. I am of Venezuelan origin, but my parents both worked in an oil company (Halliburton) and they gave them a ticket for 4 people plus a flight to go see this meeting. Good times in our country. I still have some memories like when we had lunch at a Mc Donals near the stadium and also the wonderful lifestyle of American citizens. Greetings to all.
I like how the zoom in on the ball while it’s being kicked off 🔥🔥
Jesus, Adam vinatieri played in this super bowl... And is still playing to this day. Thats just insane. This game was 1 year before I was born.... Not to mention all the nfl records he has, such as scoring over 1000 points for 2 franchises. And he has multiple super bowl winning kicks. Never truly appreciated this. Hell of a career, from a packers fan
The rest of the league is lucky we on got one ring of the legendary gunslinger
I think we were very unfortunate to only get one SB...Favre is playing great, we had a good running game, and a damn good defensive line, such a waste of talent...we should've had 3 SB...
You guys were lucky the 49ers and Cowboys lost a lot of their guys...
Cowboys choke Dak won't help that
@@riveraJG you right Dallas absolutely owned farve
Probably would've gotten more if holmgren stayed. Seemed like he got the most out of favre and at least held his interceptions somewhat in check
Omg so many childhood stars. Favre, Howard, rison, freeman, Reggie white, Dorsey levens, Bledsoe, Keith byars, Curtis Martin, terry Glenn man this was gridiron 🏈!!!
Oh my... favre was throwing dots in stride to receivers like it was nothing. I wish I could of watched him play
This was nowhere near his best game. Prime Favre was UNTOUCHABLE
The Pats have played 11 SB's best Franchise in all of football
Wrong
Man I lived in Green Bay at this time, I was 4. Remember going to the parade after..good times
This was a good game
It doesn't get better than this...Brett Favre, Reggie White, John Madden, Pat Sommerall, and a Green Bay ass whoopin'!
The third quarter gash, my favorite super bowl moment in history.
Even as a Packer fan, I still think Favre was down before he got the ball over the plane for that TD. Hard to tell from the camera angle though
I attended this event as a lifelong Patriots fan. Boy did Parcells fool us. When the team flee back to N.E. tuna wasn't with them. He knew the Jets job was his and his dislike for Krafty Bob rub&tug let thr dream die again. Thank god for Brady and Belichick.
I didn’t know that the guy that’s on college football was a football legend in college and in the NFL....This dude was the Heisman winner in college and super bowl MVP that’s freaking nuts...Desmond Howard is great..Why isn’t he mentioned that often
Outside of his return game in 1996 he didn't do much in the NFL at all and was mostly a bust
Don Beebe is grateful he got a Superbowl ring, after failing to win a ring at 4 Superbowl appearances.
Desmond Howard may have had one of the most unique career paths ever, but showing up HUGE in THE biggest game corrects the narrative pretty well.
Reggie White!
This game was played in 1997, but was a result of the 1996 season.
I was watching this on-board the USS Nassau. LHA-4
The field looks like concrete
That was the old astroturf
Thomas S Dangerous as hell
Astroturf basically carpet over concrete very dangerous.
@@etchosts8162 unfortunately it took till Micheal Irving before there was a push to get rid of that crap. I have no idea how Astroturf caught on, that stuff should have never become popular like it did.
@@Briggie its great traction for speed but you could tear your acl much easier and getting slammed on it caused a huge impact.
Farve had a beautiful ball in his prime
Curtis Martin was the RB? Parcells was the coach? Dam im young(24) I know a lot about football but gosh i didn’t realized Curtis Martin was a patriot
Not a fan of the Pats but man that jersey design is fire
6:18 92 was truly a man amongst boys 🙏
Vinatieri has given up two kickoff returns for touchdowns in two Super Bowls. Classic.
He had 10 guys helping him with that, don't give him all the credit.
Loved this era of football even if I was born the year of this Super Bowl. But man I have to say the announcing is just void of any emotion to some absolutely electrifying plays. Makes Joe Buck look like the best announcer.
🇫🇷🇷🇺🇮🇹
The complete lack of reaction to the kickoff return is so uncanny its hilarious
I'm a Pats fan, I was born 20 days after this game and I'm only offended because I could been born with as a fan of champions lmao. Bledsoe did good for us though.
Good memories! Go Pack Go
Pat Summerall... that voice man.. best superbowl ever
I totally forgot when they used to display the hangtime, when the team punted 😅
Boy this footage takes me back
Had Brady only been born a few years earlier would've love to see him go against the 1996 Packers.
bellissimo,da italiano conoscere la storia di Vince Lombardi non si può non curarsi dei Packers. Andrea
Even though the Patriots didn't win, it was such a fun year. '96 pats were the only Boston pro team that made it to a championship round in the 90s.
The Patriots Were no push over but in retrospect No challenge or match For The ironclad 96 Packers unit . The Patriots had one lead in this game that lasted less than 3 minutes of play . I was in the 5 the grade in this Game celebrating the whole season of The unstoppable 96 pack .
Hey Coach Parcells, maybe you should've doubled the guy wearing #92?
Pat summeral TD call Brett to Risen was epic
So Now Whatever has happened to the Green Bay Packers Team Of 1996/97 That we used to have Back Then And That we could sure use them in today’s world these days especially and that team under Brett Favre was Both TimeLess And Iconic !!!!
