19 years old, never been in front of a camera before, carrying the legacy of the Reeve Superman films, and playing opposite movie legends like Peter O'Toole and Faye Dunaway. It's incredible that she dealt with all that pressure AND gave a totally endearing and likable performance too. The Supergirl movie may not be perfect, but it's a charming and entertaining piece of film, and one which always makes me feel good when I watch it.
The real reason the movie wasn’t accepted the way it was supposed to be is the fact that Reeve wouldn’t do the cameo at the end if he had this movie would have been accepted much better
Some of the news media are claiming the new Wonder Woman film is the first feature film to feature a female super hero and they forget about the 1984 Supergirl movie. It wasn't a box office hit but I think it was ahead of its time.
True. For those of us (boys/girls alike) who were Superman fans, it was fun to see, although it could have been a far better movie, especially given all the FX that had been done for Sci-Fi films like Superman, etc. up until that point.
Very true. We had the best in Christopher Reeve, and then there was Helen as Supergirl, and that was special too. Actually, I find the film to be Very special for a few reasons, not least of which was that, at the time, an all out female superhero wasn't the norm it is now, so that she was a girl was very special indeed. And the film was fun, though not perfect.
Thanks for uploading this footage VA. I watched the Supergirl and Superman movies growing up in the 80's, and always thought that Helen Slater had such a charismatic beauty to her, even in her 'plain Jane' role in Ruthless People. I haven't seen any of Helen's interviews previously, but from recently watching some of her early and current interviews, it's heartwarming to see that she seems to be a genuinely lovely person, with a great deal of intelligence, humor, and warmth. Melissa Benoist does a wonderful job in her role, however Helen Slater's Supergirl is still my favourite.
Helen was/is also VERY intelligent. She didn't buy into what Rebecca de Mornay and Heather Locklear did as a blond sex pot. She was definitely more about quality substance and content than the act of selling it in the business.
@ bansheefan57, I don't know about Helen well enough to differ from your argument but I will say I remember seeing Rebecca and Heather in films and I has a massive crush on both at different times. Either way, women had a very attractive feminine quality in the 80s that you just don't see today.
Love how the first interviewer is lounging in his seat, resting his head on his hand, gazing at her, like he's had a few beers and is trying to hit on her. Don't blame him mind :-)
I So Enjoyed This Video!!! Very cool and awesome. I LOVE ❤️ HELEN SLATER!!! She is and Always will be MY BEST GIRL!!! So Beautiful And I Could listen to her talk all day and all night. Sounds like an Angel sent from Heaven!!
i was scrolling through the comments and all i see is ''amazing beauty, oh she's beautiful, such beauty'' and i'm like wtf? there's more to her than her looks, you know she can act too. so the fact you mention her acting over her looks is a nice surprise.
Helen Slater Portrayed Supergirl in 1984 Movie Supergirl Before Melendy Britt voiced She-Ra in The Secret of the Sword (1985),Terri Hawkes and Stephanie Sheh Voiced Sailor Moon in the anime movies and Tara Strong Voiced Bubbles in The Powerpuff girls Movie (2002) with Red Boots,Blonde Hair,Red Cape,Blue Clothes and Heat Vision
I like the Supergirl movie as a movie that's incredibly quirky, but the actors really deserved a better script and Helen Slater really gave it her all and I liked her as Supergirl.
Played an abusive mother with Munchausen by Proxy in a Lifetime movie called "The Good Mother." Performance was spot on. One of the best Lifetime movies ever made if not THE best.
At 4:00 she says “At 20 years old, how much can I possibly know about myself.” So humble. It seems kids nowadays are gonna lecture you on them, and what’s right and wrong.
When I Close My Eyes, You Are All I See. In The Dark Of Night, You’re In My Dreams. Throughout The Day, You’re Easy To Find. You’re Always There When I Close My Eyes. LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY HEART ♥️ HELEN SLATER!!!! MY LOVE FOR YOU WILL NEVER DIE❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Helen Slater was the best Super girl and Legend Of Billie Jean, The Secret Of My Success, I always loved Supergirl. Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, and The Legend Of Billie Jean she kicked everyone's ass. She was really excited for Supergirl and met Christopher Reeve. I love Helen Slater and she did some great movies.
I’ve no idea why this wasn’t a big hit , everyone said the story line was hard to follow ? Really ! It easy to follow, I think people just couldn’t except a Supergirl in 1984 , Fay Dunaway was perfect as the villain and the music score was amazing , it wasn’t a flop just not as big as they had hoped for
Margot Kidder (Lois Lane) Co-Produced a TV STage Production of "PYGMALION (1983)" For Fox as Eliza Doolittle opposite Peter O'Toole and said when meeting him on set "Im very sorry but Im nervous" to which he replied laughing "Oh, youre nervous" .... PYGMALION Aired US CABLE July 1983.
Helen Slater was the best Supergirl they could have cast for that time (at least I think so). It's too bad the movie didn't have a better script, it could have done a lot better. Nevertheless I still enjoy the movie because Helen was so stunning (!) and I think she gave such a great performance in spite of a flawed/weak plot.
It brings back memories. I was in japan at the moment when i saw it. There were more scenes in the version shown in japan. When i saw it in america when i came back i was surprised. The plot was bad and the fact that they even had that guy in the movie was all wrong.
She is superfit. Looking that hot practically means this girl doesn't need to carry money or anything. I sure any bloke would just be happy to pay for her meals, look after her and practically give her an easy life.
+TheRubberStudiosASMR Helen actually did these interviews to promote the film before its release. When the movie didn't do well at the box office she tried to distance herself from it but now fully embraces it.
the original, Supergirl, helen slater, she's so beautiful I can't explained it!! wow;-)
She still is a hottie

beautifully said
She had a couple of small roles before this.
I live it. I think it’s great. Movies are subjective, it’s a great film to me, so that makes it a great film… to me.
The real reason the movie wasn’t accepted the way it was supposed to be is the fact that Reeve wouldn’t do the cameo at the end if he had this movie would have been accepted much better
This is pure beauty.
And she's still beautiful.

Helen Slater is very beautiful in the movie Secret of my success. Looks like an angel in this interview. Love her!
She looks like a Muppet!!
LOl I love her story that she told when she met with Christopher Reeves. She will always be Supergirl to me, I wish she did more of Supergirl movies.
no
@@fabiofernandes9122 No what? I do think they should have made more, it has it's flaws but it's still one of my favorite movies!
A beautiful person inside and out
She's so super cute.
She is very intriguing. She seems sensitive, deep, and sweet. Thank you for the video.
They should put her in a movie with a Michael Keaton Batman. She should be the Supergirl of his universe!
Gosh, that smile!
She was then and is still beautiful
its a joker smile how it really curls at the ends, but i like it too
@@kcsnipes exactly!! The way the corners of her lips curl make her look adorable

What a warm, wonderful, luminous beauty. She is amazing and still as beautiful as ever today. 💖 Thank you for posting this gem.
I had the biggest crush on her when I was 13 in 1984.

I think a lot of people missed that "Wonder Woman 1984" was in many ways a throwback to the style of "Supergirl".
Helen's meeting with Christopher Reeve sounded epic! Why didn't anyone film it!? It was a historic moment!
They were seeing Superman 3 together when she met him
Because Christopher reeve didnt want to do it..
She was just beautiful!🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️😍😍
Yes! I love Supergirl! She is my hero! Especially Helen Slater! She's beautiful & gorgeous! 💜💜

+FireBirdsGo You're welcome. No disrespect to Melissa Benoist but Helen will always be my favorite Supergirl.
+Vintage Amazonia I totally agree. Helen will always be my favorite Supergirl as well.
Have a feeling we won't see that level of angelic loveliness again. Young women are much harder and less feminine nowadays.
There are plenty of women like that out there. Perhaps not in show business, but they are out there.
Too many women in show business nowadays come across as male hero wannabes!!!!!!
Truth. Women had a feminine voice back then and were not ashamed of it.
Helen was/is also VERY intelligent. She didn't buy into what Rebecca de Mornay and Heather Locklear did as a blond sex pot. She was definitely more about quality substance and content than the act of selling it in the business.

It was campy. It also came after the disappointment of Superman III.

Naturally the young Helen Schlattner did too as Kara-El/Supergirl months later.
Slater was a changed surname.
She obviously right as she is still alive she never should have been felt that way about the cast she is supergirl
