  • The Stoic Wall Residence in Kadirur, Kerala, seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor living, embodying harmony with the tropical climate. With meticulous design considerations for the irregular site, large trees, and accessibility, the 7,317-square-foot house strategically positions its primary section to minimize heat gain. Divided into four zones across three levels, the residence features courtyards, landscape pockets, and biophilic elements, creating a holistic living experience.
The ground floor includes a formal living area, outdoor sitting space, and car porch in the first zone. The second zone houses an open family living and dining area connected to the outdoors, with a discreetly placed kitchen. The third zone comprises bedrooms, a prayer area, and a private corridor with courtyards. The upper floor, protected by a terracotta screen, includes an entertainment room and a master bedroom with a lounge area.
The architectural form, characterised by exposed laterite walls, projects a solid presence, offering privacy and seclusion. Courtyards act as focal points, connecting spaces and engaging with the natural environment. Thoughtfully chosen materials, including exposed laterite, terracotta, teak wood, and stone, create a warm ambiance. Native plants and trees enhance the landscape, grounding the house in its surroundings.
Despite its unapologetically modern design, The Stoic Wall Residence maintains a profound regional connection, blending traditional elements with contemporary aesthetics. From charming furniture simplicity to personalised fine art photographs, every detail contributes to a unique and harmonious living space that celebrates Kerala's landscape.

This residential building stands out for its distinctive features - from the stoic wall construction and intricate vaults to the thoughtfully designed courtyards. The abundant use of natural light and ventilation adds a unique touch, bearing the unmistakable signature of its creators. This architectural masterpiece serves as an exemplary study material for aspiring designers, showcasing a concept that deserves applause. My congratulations to architects Reny and Lijo for crafting such a remarkable design...

I have know Lijo and Reny from past 20 years.Their work always departs from the rest in many ways....the way they look at a house as an experience than static volumes, the way they are sensitive to climate and a rich material pallette that makes this project an interesting one among other works that have been produced by them over two decades......a desigers life is a journey that evolves with change in ideology, perception, experience...
and this evolution is registered in the work....I feel that evolution when I compare The Stoic Wall Residence to their earlier works. I wish them the very best and look forward to more path breaking works from them in the future.

Great work. This house does have its space but when considering other better houses, well buit with beautiful eye pleasing designs, this one dispelled me. Overall it looks like a renovated soviet era building. Very dry. I can't pinpoint it but the overall energy is negative.

Instead of running behind un necessary complicated design fix AC wherever required inside the house and switch it ON whenever required and OFF if u don’t need, Install a solar panel to supply power. For enjoying the nature and climate go outside the house and enjoy it without any hindrance.

Terrible structure. It looks like a cross between a glorified warehouse and a relic of WWII defence quarters.
And to worsen matters, .....is the lady presenter, with her pseudo accent woefully lapsing every now and then, into her thickly coated regional accent.
This structure is the ultimate insult to Kerala's natural beauty.

No offense.. but this house looks quite sad and depressing even with all the landscaping. The explanations they give about the space feels super fake (with the fake accent and everything), (a lot of stuff that is made to seem unnecessarily complicated) and would possibly be good enough to impress an unassuming client. Of course they might have solved the lighting and ventilation like any other architect would, but the result is what hits me, this life less space that resembles nothing short of what would be the worst designed Scandinavian jail. Have admired the duo Lijo & Reny during their initial days up until a few years ago, for creating path breaking projects and carving up the perspective of a generation of architects who came after them, but now their work has started to look stale in comparison to many of their contemporaries'. They seem to have shifted their focus on setting a statement or getting accolades rather than innovating and re-inventing themselves while keeping the best interests of their clients' interests. Anyways all the best to both! if they ever break out of their shells to do something more honest and heartfelt.
