    Woah...When my brother passed this was one of the last songs he sent me via text...we used to text almost daily...and send music to each other...the first line that came into mind when he had finally passed was “planet earth is blue and there’s nothing I can do”...I’m tearing up as I write this...his other fave was “Heroes” and now I’m crying...thx for uploading this...he passed Dec. 4, 2016 @ 7:10pm...my brother is now a Starman too. Your vid made me so happy thinking of my “kid” brother, he was an adult but forever my kid brother.

      I think you hit the meaning of this song right on its nose. This "explanation" in this video, in my opinion, is very poor. There is an element of life and death that they completely missed. This song goes much deeper than space exploration.

    Wonderfully done! You nailed a song that speaks so much to people like me. I saw the man landing on the moon on TV when I was 7 years old. I am a teacher and science researcher. The cover by an astronaut in a space station decades later says it all on the meaning of this song.

    I love Bowie with all of my heart and this song completely changed some of my personal views on life, besides that, it's the first song that I learned to play on guitar. Bowie was a legend and he will always remain a musical hero. Thank you for the video, your videos amaze me every single time.

    I always imagine this song as a crew and major Tom are getting ready to blast Tom into space with his crew but while in his capsule his crew dies, and he has to try to survive alone while the team tries to get him back like when his “can you hear me major Tom” and like when major Tom is talking to him, he’s just stuck in his rocket. Until he’s all alone and disconnected from everyone and he is just left to die alone and is destined to just be alone floating in a tin can in space

  • @user-og1tk1yi5c
    @user-og1tk1yi5c Před 6 lety +1

    Holy crap this is great. I just started to get into Bowie's stuff. Loved this video.
    I'd love to hear the rest of the cover, too.

  • @eldesiertohumanohumanidadd4115

    I always think that Space Oddity was a song inspired by the conversation of two friends by telephone one of them is trying to cheer him up and the other one it's really depressed and it may have committed suicide the most powerful line it's when he says tell my wife I love her so much but when david bowie screams she knows maybe he's that friend trying to help his depressive friend and when he says can you hear me Major Tom can you hear me Major Tom it's like silence and you know what happened when the Silence happens........

    I have a surprise for you and you want to be sitting down. Bowie did the song early and it had nothing to do with an anthem to the great astronauts. he had to damage control when the astronauts worshipped it. In fact it was part of his same theme as other rockers at the time commenting on the media and the huge silver screen of gods put before us. "youve really made the grade now all the papers want to know whoes shirts you wear". that is why he killed off the astronaut. there is also the early video of him in "major tom" outfit which clearly was not an anthem but quite sarcastic against superstars of the time.

    What tripped me out was a sequence from
    Apollo 13 where the are "returning the earth". Watching it I really felt they were in a tin can! Watch it yourself when you've got a moment,,,it's eerie. Well, it seems that the director, Ron Howard, had been inspired by Space Oddity and , yes, did his very best to make it look like Major Tom's experience. Who's to say that the astronauts on that flight hadn't had the song pass through their minds as they sat there, having no idea if they'd make it home or not!

    • @dinosaurfilms
      @dinosaurfilms Před 6 lety +1

      Jeff Lynne's compositions almost always has a nice tinge of the Beatles in them. ELO is often even considered by some to be like the successors to the Beatles.

    • @doctordrewl6413
      @doctordrewl6413 Před 4 lety

      I've read that Mr. blue Sky was written after a long stint of writer's block which was quelled when a long storm finally passed, revealing none other than... a blue sky. The band was staying in some mountain chateau at the time, writing and recording music. It wouldn't be hard to google if you want all the deets.
