- A retrospective Look at Divinity Original Sin, the game that laid the groundwork for Divinity Original Sin 2 and Baldur's Gate 3. How does it fair after all this time?
Divinity Original Sin by Larian Studios - Hry
Divinity is so peculiar to me beause it simultaneously rocketed Larian to somewhat mainstream success and yet it still feels slept on. Great games all around, cant wait to play BG3 when I upgrade my rig
Well said. I absolutely loved Divinity 1 OS (I wish more would discover it for themselves) and Divinity II. I just built a new PC system in order to play BG3 (as well as other uses) so I totally understand the need for an upgraded rig.
my first game from larian... and i was literally shocked how amazing it was!
Same here. I LOVED the gameplay and mechanics of the game.
I started with Divine Divinity many years ago. Absolutely amazing back then. I treat this game like many treat old diablo games
@@DarkErrant the gameplay was a stand out for me and the attention to details is CRAZY…
please try it with someone else (Co-op)… I am certain you will enjoy it even more…
@@karol8032 it was action based back in the days, i am yet to play any of the diablo games but i think they were kinda the same, game play wise...
The biggest difference between 1-2 is the armor system. In 2 they have a specific magic/physical armor system where magic dmg has to go through the magic armour before it can do effects/dmg against the target, same with physical. In 1 it all is the same and worked out so you don’t have to worry about going 50/50 or all magic or all physical.
Yeah, multiclassing in first game was much better and useful because of that
Even before watching the video, i have to say:
I just (minutes ago) finished the game, it is my first Larian Game and it was incredible. Got stuck/lost a few times but nothing that could take away its beauty.
The journey is awesome, its surprising, complex, rewarding... everyone should try it.
oh man the rock paper scissor persuasion checks are hilarious, in dos2 they just let you bruteforce checks by having enough raw stats but still have some fond memories in dos1 co-op. just as with dos2 you can 1 shot every single enemy in the game by using near infinite weight chest, lastboss included making it either an extremely challenging journey on highest diffuclty or an aboslute joke even with 1 save. The staggering amount in varying builds, encounters, ways to use enviorment against enemies i'm jealous of people that havent played this masterpiece.
BTW I was able to run DOS 2 back when I only had integrated graphics on an i7 4790, I had to play on low, and since it was a turn based game I was able to play it okay (even if it doesn't reach the minimum requirements)
The quality of your writing and overall production is really great! You deserve way more subscribers, and have earned yourself a new one!
One of the best videos about game(s) /review. Thank you for beeng simple.
I played the game long time ago but started video to see what is going to be said about this game, and my reaction is very positive.
Keep with good work.
Video is awesome, keep up the awesome work
My son and I played and finished 1 earlier in the year. Had a great time. "Club 'em daddy!" is still an uttered phrase in our house to this day. We plan on playing 2 together later this year when his military service ends. Looking forward to it.
Loved this game back then.
Thanks, I have been wondering if the older Larian games were worth it, just to give me a break from BG3, and to let my poor PC have a bit of a rest. Your comments, make it more likely.
Try dos2 playing a Polymorph lone wolf build. So good, get heaps of strength stats and metamorph spells, which is strength based as well. You will destroy.
Short answer: Yes 💯 absolutely 👍🏻
I spent 398 hours in this game. Finished it 3 times, including Honor Mode. And even now, when I'm in the middle of BG3 Honor Mode playthrough, I still have the urge to play DOS at least one more time
seeing you throwing ismashell in the sea pained me. Eating him grants you PERMANENT water resistance and the benefit can be doubled with the talent that doubles food effects
Divinity Original Sin 2 kicks Baldurs Gate 3’s ass by heaps for me. The story, the characters, the gameplay, the combat, the quest logs, the crafting was way better in Dos2
Great work
I spent more that 100 hours on this game. I loves it so much. A comforting game for me, whether for the music, exploration or combat. The story… well… it is a story
Is this one easy by chance I only played simple crpgs tbh like shadowruners and dao??
soo DOS 2 is prequel of DoS 1 right??
First town is so cozy
Cyseal best town
finally a new good channel I can sub tho! MORE vids about good old rpg's pls :)
One of my favorite ❤❤❤
I really liked the game back then, however I'm glad i played it before dos2. I couldn't force myself to replay it after dos2 even tho i tried multiple times
Enjoyed the game.. End up killing almost every magister on fort joy.. Am i doing things right?
I still need to play it properly for the fist time and is already 10 years old 😮
Nice review. I honestly enjoyed DOS1 more than 2, the armor mechanics in 2 never sat well with me. As for music, it's not only good, it's excellent, and better than the music in DOS2 or BG3 imho. It's the last time Kirill Pokrovsky worked with Larian, as he passed away after this game was released. Borislav Slavov is a great composer, but Kirill really had that magic touch.
i think, as first experience, i had more fun in Dos1 than in Dos2
In D&D everyone atacks in first round/turn. Then people with more than one attack attack again and so on. In Larian's Original Sin people dance like no one is watching while everyone is watching everytime they attack. Then the survivors attack dancing like....
made me wna finish my playthrough^^
DOS2's armor system means I'll never play it again, but I have very fond memories of the story. Haven't gotten DOS1 because its price hasn't come down in ten years of being out.
what do you mean, i just picked up the enhanced edition on sale for 8 bucks on steam, unless youre talking about console prices.
What are you talking about? DoS 1 EE was not only in sales a few days ago with a -80% discount, but it's on sale almost all the time.
DOS2 armor system is whole reason why I am tempted to say I actually enjoy DoS2 more than BG3. It created better tactical situations.
I thought DOS1 was incredible. The majority of the game had a lot of comedic moments, but every time it shifted to a more serious tone, it nailed it.
The build variety was also amazing, the only complaint i have is the randomized loot and equipment in shops. Did a lot of save scumming to find the perfect gear pieces to fit my build.
SPOILER ahead: It was also such a unique pace of events, i thought Braccus Rex was the final boss only to realize there were 2 more acts to go.
TBH I like DOS better than BG3, can't wait to see how DOS 3 will be like, hopefully they will keep the DOS style of RPG, because the DnD in BG3 limits a lot how badass the character can be
Only thing i don’t like in this game it is very easy to mess up your build and you can’t respec as far as i recall
This is the first game in a long time when I was forced to looking for solution on the Internet on how to solve certain puzzles. And no, thats not a good thing.
gameplay is amazing but man, the atmosphere and not serious tone is very weird, in 1 as 2.
It may feel a little dated, but I still enjoy playing it nowadays.
That said I never liked it as much qs DOS2, that game it's actually in my top 3 of most favorite games. I think that the quality jump between OS1 to OS2 was very big.
However, the one aspect that I prefer in OS1 is the female villain, Leandre is way more developed than Dallis, to me Dallis is very weak as an antagonist (character wise, not gameplay wise), her development in the game is abysmal, her motivations are dull and uninteresting , and her connection with Fane feels like something they shoehorned in the last moment, I find her very underwhelming. Leandra, in the contrary feels more polished, especially thanks to her relationship with Icara and Sandalor.
About BG3, it's definitely a really good game, yet it didn't blow my mind either, I still prefer DOS2 way more than BG3, especially gameplay wise.
I legit had no idea the first couple of games were Diablo like I full on thought they were going to be like Baldurs gate 1 style which really put me off from trying them since those real time strategy games were hard for me to get into since I was so used to turn based.
Being Diablo-like and not like Baldur's Gate is what made them far less appealing, frankly.
That aside, it should be stressed that they were "Diablo-like" exclusively in terms of hack'n slash clickfest combat.
Their distinctive feature was that while the combat was similar to Diablo, there was an actual RPG behind it. Branching dialogues, quests that were resolvable in multiple ways, an highly interactive gaming world resembling of the Ultima series, etc, etc.
I don’t think it holds up after playing DOS2 and BG3. So many annoying flaws. Maybe if you played it before you have some nostalgia.
I think there was too much comedy in Divinity Original Sin...
DOS is the game that SHOULD have wont g.o.t.y. in 2014! Far superior to DA Inquisition
Here I was thinking the DSO2 came out in like 2000 and this in the 90s
Yeah... that's weird and entirely on you, frankly.
Like...why?
FIRST!!!
Let me say it like this: „it ain’t really that good but it’s still better than most“
So basically good.
What part _aint really tgat good_ do you not get?@@olivercharles2930
@@olivercharles2930 yes
When did you play this game in relation to other Larian games?
First
I couldn’t love this game after bg3. It felt so boring
In 2024 this game is obviously worse.
Why ?
I honestly got bored with the game. I like the core combat and dialogue options, but the story is so boring. it started off interesting with a murder mystery, but the introduction to multiverses and time gods made it dull. the game is also filled with bugs that are annoying. like the music turns itself off in every fight, making the fights less engaging. even in the enhanced edition, attacks will miss or characters will just skip their turns without attacking.
I like the game, but not as much as DOS2 (I love that game), but I have to agree with the story, it started really good with the murder mystery, but it got a little weird, I don't think it's bad, but it's weird.
I played DOS2 first, so I found many things that I think are inferior in this game, like the characters, the story, and the combat in a way.
I still think that DOS1 is enjoyable even today. But definitely I do not replay it as frequently as DOS2.
I have never found the bug you mention about enemies skipping turns. And what do you mean about attacks missing?
About the music bug, yes, it exists, but you are exaggerating in something, it doesn't happen in every battle, and it happens only when a specific track plays, however, if you quicksave and then load the game, the music returns to normal.
@@SeventhheavenDK I played it the same order Divinity Original Sin 2 first, Divinity Original Sin 1 second. And I'm not saying it's bad, but it's simply inferior in every way. I somehow never managed to complete even the first act. DOS2 is one of my favourite games ever. I thought I'd enjoy the prequel as well, but somehow I don't. I'd probably like it if I played them in the chronological order, but after DOS2, DOS1 just feels like taking a step back in every way.
@@SereglothIV Hard disagree, specifically in combat where the original has a far better system. The magical physical split system really just ruined the gameplay for combat vs the save DC system of the first. 2 has a more interesting story and better options for diverse abilities. But requires mods to be a worthwhile experience for me as the core combat is just poorly designed.
@@praisethemoon- I prefer DOS2 combat. There's less RNG, as inflicting statuses is based on armor and not percantage chance. You also miss less often and everything is more consistent overall. I know the armor system has just as many supporters as it has opponents, but I'm one of the former.
One thing DOS1 did better was the rock-paper-scissors minigame when persuading NPCs or especially when playing in coop and disagreeing with the other player.
I'm not trying to be a contrarian here, I genuinely mean this: D:OS1 is leagues above both D:OS2 and BG3. D:OS2 was ambitious, but fell just short of being great due to some issues with the combat system and an inconsistent tone. BG3 is big, new player friendly, and it looks/sounds amazing, but as an RPG it's aggressively mediocre (and as a successor to the best RPG ever made, it's an isult). D:OS1 is perfect at everything it does, and doesn't try to do anything else.
Larian played to their strengths in D:OS1. With the later titles, it almost feels like they were ashamed of their roots and tried to fit in with the cool kids. They made the games more "serious" instead of sticking with what they know and a lot was lost in the resulting mess. Both D:OS2 and BG3 are good games, especially for modern gaming standards, but they don't compare to the really great games in the genre like Tyrany, Pathfinder: WotR or even DA:O, not to mention the games from the golden age of RPGs like BG2 and Fallout. On the other hand, D:OS1 is the best game of its kind, ever, and by a large margin. The only games that could compare are maybe Grimrock or IWD.
God, I hate that Larian will never make a sequel to IWD, it's such a missed opportunity.
