    Mark O'Connor's 'Butterfly's Day Out'
    Mark O'Connor - Mandolin
    Yo-Yo Ma - Cello
    Edgar Meyer - Doublebass
"In 1993, I was invited out to an inner-city camp at Montgomery Bell made up of mostly African American kids from the W.O. Smith Music School in Nashville. Because I was fairly new to this kind of education outreach, I was nervous about how to hold the interest of eight and ten year olds. I had just written a new mandolin piece but had not named it, so I got a notepad and passed out a slip of paper to each child. I asked the children to listen to me play my new piece and to write down what they wanted the tune to be named. Some of the titles were fantastic; I could have easily used several of them. One ten-year old wrote down the title for my tune, “Butterfly’s Day Out.” It was so poetic. “Butterfly’s Day Out” would soon become a favorite, and one I later recorded with Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer." -Mark O'Connor
A few words about the composer, Mark O'Connor:
As a child, his musical training included many styles (classical, folk and jazz) and this blending of styles and influences is evident throughout his career and in his acclaimed compositions.
O'Connor's chamber music, featuring violins, viola and cello, intricately and delightfully paints colorful musical canvasses that reveal his unique, personal artistic journey. It's a journey one critic acclaimed "one of the most spectacular in American music."
    Film directed by Fiona Zwieb

I heard this on a classical music station on my drive home from work. I thought it was the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard. It makes me want to lay back in the grass, under a tree, and just breathe. So Relaxing

I like the backstory Mark, and I love this composition ever since I first heard it so long ago. It is also a favorite of a 4-legged friend of mine!

I remember hearing this song many years ago as a teenager, when visiting San Diego. Loved it. Just today I remembered listening to this music, and recalled "Butterfly.... " something. A quick google and I found it. Such a great piece!

I love this story, I have loved this piece for quite some time. It's beautiful music for children to dance to, with scarves as butterfly wings, of course!

My husband and I heard this on the classical station and we both commented how beautiful it was. Our 21 month old was silent with wonder the entire time it played. It is our new favorite!

I first heard this during a very sad period in my life, I was coming out of my cocoon with great difficulty and then as I drove off to my new life I felt the joy and serenity of this piece . It's a beautiful blessing, It reminded me that difficulty and change are part of the butterfly's life and mine.

I was driving home from Goodwill after I had bought some cordaroys. It was warm I had my windows down and as the wind blew in this song came on.

Oh so beautiful I feel like I'm on the wings..listening today for the first time as I am in solo with the Nor'Eastern….Butterfly's Day Out has decided to stay in, as the wing will only find warmth within ….Nor'Eastern moved in, to blow snow and ice against our panes…sounds crackle accompanying soft notes of sweet hands..letting us know it's their day to fly…no today they sour their trumpets wind and wild, perhaps to cleanse the cracks, old shutter dust crust from seasons past… Oh O'Connor, Meyers and Ma..our Butterfly Day Out will be the music in you to flutter it's wings across with mellow bow in hand while the Nor'Eastern plays it's chilly band. Thank you for you oh gifted ones…joyce acebo-raguskus
