  • Today, I have the Audio Technica ATR2100X-USB dynamic microphone in the Audio Hotline Studio! I was very eager to try this mic since it is the upgraded version of the original ATR2100, which I liked!. This mic comes with some welcome upgrades compared to its predecessor and it is a reasonable price! My initial thought was that the original ATR2100 was going to get a price drop... but it turns out it is actually discontinued. So the ATR2100X is the full on replacement! I am sure the original mic can still be found used, but definitely take a good look at this mic first. It has some very good spec upgrades and overall has more to offer.
    Check out the testing and audio samples and see if this is right for you! Every person has different expectations of audio gear. If the features are what you need, and you like the sound, then it is right for you!
    Thanks for watching the Audio Hotline! I'll see you Audio Nerds next time!

    I bought one of these almost on impulse because I was struggling with an interface giving an old EV mic enough gain and I saw this Audio Technica in a music store and went "f!ck it - I'm buying a USB cardioid dynamic mic". Best purchase ever! Plenty of gain and it sounds beautiful. I can stream or video call using monitor speakers instead of headphones and don't have to worry about room treatment or ambient sounds. This mic is a gem lost in the sea of Yetis and other USB mics.
    Yes I got the USB-C to USB-C cable. But I lost it a week later and had to buy another. Then found it so now I have two...

      Yeah the MX Blues are kind of a joke between Podcastage and I. He jokingly said that in order for it to be a real keyboard rejection test that I had to use MX Blues. I guess some people gave him shit about not using them for a long time, so he started using those for a while and passed it onto me. I absolutely hate using those keys 😂 so I get that. It’s a good example of a “worst case scenario” keyboard since they are so loud.

    I think this is the first review of these mics?
    Not super impressed with the sound tbh but I'm glad they did 24 bit/192kHz processing. IMO they should have tried to flatten the response as in my opinion this is just overboosted in the high end. The USB-C thing is cool tho, the old mini-USB plug is supposed to be a weak point. You should do a 1:1 comparison with the other similar AT's and the Samson for the people who are looking for this kind of mic.
    Great review though, I really feel like I got the info I'd want if I was in the market for this kind of mic.

    My Samson Q2U of two years finally broke. The USB port got ripped out when a boom arm gave out. So now I am at a point where I am considering buying a new one, getting the ATR2100X because fuck mini/micro USB, and Audio Technica has a way better warranty, and sound seems to be on par, or just buy a Focusrite Scarlett Solo and use my Q2U via XLR.

    It seems like you got a returned microphone, mine came with a USB C to USB C cable. For me having almost a "bass" voice, having a boost in the highs is useful for me, I mean, I still need to apply EQ to my voice to make it sound like something that isn't "DEAD" but having that little bit of a boost in the highs is actually somewhat good for me given that most microphones are "racist" towards people who have bass voices.

    Hello! I'm from Brazil. I'm using Google Translator. Could you answer me, please? If I buy the Audio-Technica ATR2100x-USB Microphone I would be making a good purchase in minimum quality (USB) for voice-over, audio-books, radio and TV commercials ... for a context where I don't have a home studio and can't even spend a lot? Would my recordings be much lower than if I recorded via an interface connecting the XLR cable, or would they be much lower in quality than if I recorded with a good condenser in a home studio?

      @@AudioHotline New friend! Quick question: what's the difference between the ATR2100X-USB (featured here) and the ATR2500-USB? I'm mainly looking to record vocals.

    • @AudioHotline
      @AudioHotline  Před 4 lety +4

      @@TatiTalks So one is a condenser mic (ATR2500-USB) and the other is a Dynamic Mic (ATR2100X-USB). SO there are some pretty big differences there. Here are some points to look at for recording vocals and different mics:
      CONDENSER MIC (ATR2500-USB):
      - Usually wider Frequency Range. Sounds "bigger" than a dynamic mic.
      - Sensitive mic, doesn't need as much gain compared to a dynamic mic.
      - *IMPORTANT* Picks up room noise. Not ideal for untreated/reverberant rooms.
      - Max Quality available: 48khz at 16 bit.
      -Tends to be more pleasing for singing vocals.
      ===========================
      DYNAMIC MIC (ATR2100X-USB):
      - Big Benefit is that this is capable of XLR and USB connections, the ATR2500 is only USB. So you can "Grow Up" and get an audio interface and still use the 2100x if you want to 😉
      - Is able to record very loud sources
      - *IMPORTANT* Does a good job of cutting out room noise. Ideal for untreated room.
      - ATR2100X can record 192khz at 24 bit (much higher recording quality capabilities compared to ATR2500-USB)
      CONCLUSION:
      These mics will sound quite different given the fact that they are different types of microphones (Condenser vs Dynamic). Bottom line, if you are recording singing vocals, I personally like condenser mics... BUT if you are recording in an untreated room a Dynamic mic will be much better and cleaner sounding, without all the room noise and room reverb. Also, in this case the ATR2100X is capable of recording at a much higher quality than the ATR2500-USB, which is really nice. The XLR capability of the ATR2100X is also really nice!
      If by chance you were referring to the ATR2500X-USB, all of these things still apply, but the X versions of each mic is capable of recording the same 192khz at 24bit. That would be the only difference.
      Hopefully this was helpful and not too confusing 😂

      @@AudioHotline Really though, USB audio has been getting so good the last couple years that for most people, interfaces have become irrelevant if a mic is all they need one for. Interfaces are good if you want or need the additional features that come with them, but for mic only, it doesn't matter much anymore.

      Thank you! Yes, you can make the decision in your computer sound settings if you want to hear this mic through your computer headphone jack, speakers, the mic headphone jack, etc. If you just want direct latency free monitoring you can just use the headphone jack on the mic without messing with the output settings! It will work identically to the yeti in that regard.

      I just received this mic and while the headphones were connected directly to the microphone, you would hear buzzing sound. Is it normal though? Or it can be overcome by using any audio interface instead of direct usb plug in. it's kind of annoying to hear the buzz after a long time. So I just plug it into my computer instead. I mainly use this mic to upgrade my online live streaming class.

    Hiya! I purchased this microphone and have a focusrite audio interface but I'm running into a little issue that I really hope someone can help me out with.
    With the microphone connected to the interface via xlr, I realized I could not monitor audio through the mic's headphone jack like I could when it was connected to the laptop via usb. I wanted to use that headphone jack as a way of additional monitoring but can't seem to figure out how.
    Is there any way to adjust my interface settings so that the analog track is both and input/output like I could with the USB plug in? Is that even possible? I don't know I'm trying my best to learn about alot of this and would appreciate anyone's insight. Thank you!!

    • @AudioHotline
      @AudioHotline  Před 4 lety +1

      Zack David Music yeah it is direct input monitoring so the dial only controls the headphone volume, BUT if you set your computer “output” sound settings to the ATR2100X you will be able to hear your computer’s audio as well. So this would work well for Zoom.

      ALAN MACLEOD from about 8:50 to 10:00 in the video it goes over the polar pattern and background noise rejection of this mic. Although it is not an additional person talking in the room, it does show you the off axis rejection, so it is a good example as to how it would reject another voice in the room. With this mic being a cardioid dynamic mic, it will reject another voice well.
