In fact, I bought my Eco with the intention to use exactly one ink (Pelikan royal blue) in it for the lifetime of the pen. It's my every-day, at-work pen for taking notes in meetings, on the phone with customers, etc. So by and large, I agree with what Drew was saying here; the internal filling just happens to work very well with my use case.

100% agreed, Drew! I love beautiful things almost as much as I love COLLECTING/accumulating beautiful things and am a serial hobbyist (ADHD). It has taken an ENORMOUS amount of mental effort to curb my spending habits when it comes to new hobbies. Online posts within various niche hobbyist communities (like this one) are rife with indirect peer pressure to not miss out on the next shiny new thing, and tends to normalize exorbantant spending on products, which makes it incredibly difficult for those like myself. I do not need more than 10 pens. I have actually set that as my hard limit, only being able to add to my collection if I regift or resell a pen. No one really needs 500+ fountain pens! Thank you for mentioning this in the video, people need to know they don't have to bankrupt themselves to feel a part of this community and that they've had an enriching experience with fountian pens.

Honestly, the TWSBI Swipe vs Eco debate enlightened me. I’d been looking for a fairly affordable ink tank to add to my collection but I was wary of the durability of the Eco and the sheer size of its barrel (I have small hands and prefer slimmer pens). This just convinced me to get a TWSBI swipe!

As a full time freelance illustrator who often spends days on end drawing with a fountain pen, I agree with several of these. Especially the gold vs steel nib argument and the 10 pens argument. I've owned 50+ pens over the years and the more and more I used them and once I found the right ones, I realized I could happily whittle my collection down to 2... and I've nearly done that already. I've also spent thousands of hours using many different nibs, sometimes even gold "upgrade" versions of the same steel nib pen I also own, and I've developed exactly 0 preference for material whatsoever. As long as the nib is properly manufactured and tuned, the material itself means absolutely nothing to me. Heck, the 2 main stars of my collection are steel nibbed and relatively cheap pens... yet they work like a dream.

    • @jcortese3300
      @jcortese3300 Před 3 měsíci +1

Whittling down to two is where I'm heading at this point: one Scriveiner medium and one Conklin stub. Everything else is like, "Gee that's pretty ... don't want it, but it's pretty ... "

The Penbbs handles my much sketchier, looser, larger flowing work because A: the fude nib really lends itself to that and B: the body shape is wonderful for choking way back on the pen to get really loose painterly strokes out of it. 1. Awe HELL nah! Love my Eco, love the ink capacity, love the ease of cleaning, love the clear barrel.
    2. Lamy is a perfectly attractive pen.
    3. I can’t clean anything I have as well as I can clean my Eco and Asvine 126 vac fill. I have a Lamy and cleaning the glitter out of that filler is a nightmare. No more shimmer inks for Lamy! It’s a breeze with all of my TWSBIs. Hard disagree.
    4. I don’t *need* any fountain pens. But I want a large collection so I can pick a pen for my mood.
    5. Agree on the steel. The tech at this point makes the metal used far less important than the quality of manufacture. And I prefer the color silver anyway.

Me: *Glancing at six of my Eco's that I've written dry in the last few days, and then glowering at Drew through the screen".
Also, I don't usually switch inks -- I just refill them. Once I settle on an ink for a pen (or sometimes buy a pen for a specific ink), I rarely to never change it.
Also, *also* , there is something (besides all that) that's very weird about me: I may be the only fountain pen lover in the world who has a substantially easier time cleaning my pens with a piston than with a bulb syringe. So much so, that I don't even clean cartridge/converter pens with them. The only exceptions are my cartridge only Liliput pen (which I still clean with a Kaweco converter) and my Opus 88 eyedroppers.

Steel vs gold is complex. I have been fortunate that almost all of my nibs have been well adjusted out of the box. Mostly my favorite nib is the one I am writing with at any given time.

Glad to hear your opinion on internal pistons. I VASTLY prefer converters to every other filling mechanism. They're also super-easy to fly with -- you just fly dry with a sample vial.
You can also fill a converter from a sample vial with ZERO effort -- just stick it in the vial and put it back in the grip. No need for an ink miser or silicone tubing, either. The ink bottle has to be pretty much completely empty before you can't fill a converter from it.
Also, I'm finding that my TWSBIs write so wet when I fill them completely that they aren't usable. What good is a large ink capacity when I can't use all of it?
I find I've gotten to the point where the more pens I try, the more narrow my preferences have gotten: 1.1m stub, K6 threaded converter, screw or pop cap, done.

Thanks for the great and candid video, Drew. I admit some of my pen journey is influenced by you and the Goulet Pen Company.
    My hot takes:
    1. 3-4 pens inked at a time. Because I want to make each one feel used and it's too many to clean beyond that.
    2. Shading inks are better than shimmer inks, also easier to clean.
    3. Samples > full bottles for first time trying inks apart from blue or black which I'll use everyday.
    4. The Lamy Safari tripod grip is just too harsh and uncomfortable. But I love the colours.
    5. Why are there so many black ink varieties? Apart from maybe waterproof, document, iron gall, shimmer, shading I can't imagine more varieties of black.
    6. Have fun with as many filling mechanisms especially while you're new to the pen world.

I love these Hot Takes! Please make more videos like this! Honestly, some of these points like how steel > gold was how I felt exactly for the reasons you stated. It makes it possible to get more pens with the same amount of $$ as a single gold nib pen, as well as technologies being more advanced than 50+ years ago can make writing with a steel nib pen much less panic-inducing in day-to-day scenarios. The amount of stress I had when bringing my TWSBI or Jinhao pens vs my Lamy 2000 to my college classes was incomparable. And of course, it's the day I chose to bring my Lamy 2000 that someone asked to borrow my pen... I did lend it, but I was watching like a hawk the whole time. Versus if someone asked to borrow my Jinhao 82? The anxiety is not the same.

My first 2 pens were a Safari and a Mont Blanc with a gold nib, so I'd say I got spoiled right out of the gate. I love the Safari but I've had 2 develop cracks in the cap so naturally I'm looking at the Al Star now, same design but better durability.
I bought a Stipula piston fill just because I fell in love with its gorgeous design. Actually I haven't inked it yet but I will soon. Given that I have about 10 pens, I won't ever work it too much so I expect I'll deal with its idiosyncrocies fairly well.
I was also spoiled to get into the hobby back in the late 1980s when gold nibs were still pretty affordable. Personally, I find gold to be smoother and more forgiving than steel but that's not a terribly strong preference.
I'm glad to see younger people getting serious about fountain pens. A younger colleague observed me writing with one and I wound up giving it to her - it was an inexpensive Platinum but still a very nice pen.

I'm collecting pens from each brand with each nib type. And I tend to write my book rough drafts with many pens. All have different inks, allowing me to distinguish which chapter and revision. Currently have 12 pens inked and I switch between them during long writing sessions. It's like racing in formula 1. You need to pit sometimes to change the tires and top off the fuel tank. I always finish my piston filler inks. My cartridge converters are my ink test playground or my dip pens. Yes. I am a fountain pen addict.

#2 - Safari is OK Bauhaus, but not comparable to more ornamental pieces.
#3 - Agree, the replaceable converter helps with longevity of pens, just have a stock of converters handy.
#4 - x > 10 pens, so you can spend more time on writing & ideas, less on shopping for replacements
#5 - acquire a few gold nibs, the rest can be steel nib, more durable, takes advantage of modern manufacturing.

    3. Cartridge converters have been working great for me. My MZG is my only piston filler and I do use it a full fill at a time, though it takes months to do so.
    4. I think 20 pens is my sweet spot - several fine nibs inked with different colors, an EF, a M, a pen for permanent black ink, a couple flex options (inked with different colors), a Hongdian long blade, an architect, a couple italics...yep. I definitely need more than 10

Ok so I totally agree with Drew on internal fillers. The twsbi 580 was my first and second pen because of the huge capacity of ink but I let it sit empty for longer because it's a substantially bigger chore to clean and gets used less because it's holding so much ink of something that's no longer part of my seasonal inks. They'll eventually just permanently hold my archival inks because of said fact. Great pens but I regularly go to my other cartridge/converter pens because of the ease of cleaning to experiment with my ever growing collection of inks. Definitely a hot take that I need to hear so solidify my choice 😂

I do drain my Lamy 2000 routinely. I've also gone through nearly a whole bottle of Chou Kuro that I ordered from Gulet Pens earlier this year. Between writing a book by hand, writing every day, and writing just to write, I have found that no capacity is enough. It's better at this point that I have a quick and easy way to fill the pen. I love my Lamy 2000's gold nib, but my $20 Pilot Explorer rivals that smoothness, and I can refill nearly instantly with the Con-B converter. Yes, the cap is worthless, but I actually am more troubled about refilling the 2000.

Great video! I think I agree with just about everything (except I have no personal info to judge swipe vs eco). Here's some of my thoughts:
    1. I love the idea of red inks, but that's as far as I go. I don't enjoy writing with them at all. Maybe for marking things up. Only exception being Noodler's red-black, and even then that's pushing it.
    2. I don't regret my first pen being a Pilot Metropolitan...but I do. Great beginner pen but I don't use it anymore.
    3. I like the Noodler's pen smell.
    4. With few exceptions, I'm fine never spending >$40 on a pen. I'm happy with my Ahab's, Pilot Prera's, and Safaris. I'm curious about the Lamy 2000 but that's it
