  • I challenged myself to make a $350 leather Hermès AirTag keyring using only hand tools, for less than $7!

    Want to make your own? Here's what you'll need:

    Steel ruler: amzn.to/3icJcph
    Let's be honest, we'd all have a Hermès AirTag keyring if we could; they're beautiful. Though, we don't all have a small fortune lying around for something to hold our $30 Apple AirTag. Plus, I'm a firm believer in making before buying. So, in this leather working project, I make a DIY AirTag leather keyring, and I've included a FREE leather pattern so you can follow along and learn how to make an Apple AirTag case for yourself!
    While it might not be an exact replica of the Hermès product, I've added my own rustic twist to better suit my preferred style and to make it simpler for you to make with the same basic hand tools I've used in this asmr video. This makes this fancy leather keychain a perfect beginner leather working project for anyone looking to try out this craft, or for the more experienced among you looking for a fun project for yourself or as a gift (hint: these things work brilliantly as a gift for that personal touch!). So, if you're looking for the perfect Apple AirTag accessory, this DIY AirTag keychain might be the ideal leather working project for you.

    I had given my nephew four AirTags for Christmas. I was looking at keychain fobs for his upcoming birthday and came down with a serious case of “I could make this if I had a bit more time.” I’m more of a maker general practitioner than dedicated leather crafter but I have done a few knife sheaths and have the tools and materials in my shop. Thanks to your pattern, the hardest part of the project - or at least my biggest sticking point - plus a quick stop at our local Tandy Leather for the hardware, I do have the the time. All pieces cut, punched and glued. Test fit with my own AirTag was a success. Dye now applied. Once the dye is dry all that remains is to burnish the edges and do the stitching. All easily accomplished tonight. (Leaving me 24 hours to spare.)
    I bought a bag of the button studs so I’ll probably do another for myself with bronze snap hook instead of the split ring. It will useful to clip to a bag, a set of keys, or to my elderly mom when I take her to the store. (She’s always trying to lose me!) Anyhow thanks again. You’ve earned my subscription.

      Hi Jeff, sorry I missed your message! Man, wow, loved every minute of this. Genuinely makes me smile knowing how much your nephew would have appreciated the work you put in (and that you won't be losing your mom again any time soon 😅) Hope you had a good new year, so happy to have you on the team! 😊

    Thanks for the pattern …I may try to make a copy cat out of vinyl . I have just started sewing vinyl .
    Before a week ago I had no idea what is AirTag ….LOL.
    My son bought 4 because he back to traveling after 3 years of Covid restrictions and being careful.
    I want to make a AirTag pouch for his pooch ….. they won’t be renewing the GPS tracker service in summer….they will use AirTag instead.
    I am to buy my 4 AirTags before I travel so it’s going to be making AirTags for every member of my family , two per person .
    Thanks for posting a very very good tutorial 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

    • @JamesKGraves
      @JamesKGraves  Před 3 lety

      Hi there! For this particular project, I started with pretty clean edges so I just applied the edge paint and burnished with that! More often than not, though, I'll first burnish with Tokenole, then wipe it off and go over with the edge paint before final burnish 😊

  • @MorrMedia1
