Fixing eBay Junk - Game Boy Color Frontlight Mod

  • I show you how to install a frontlight to your Game Boy Color. The Game Boy & Game Boy Color had a great library of classic games, but the screen left lots to be desired. It was hard to see, and if it got dark, you could forget about trying to play anything. This frontlight panel works great to solve that issue.
    I bought my panel here: handheldlegend.com/collection...

    A couple recommendations to go along with this video, remove the silver strip on the bottom of the front light kit before putting it down, and the adhesive used is LOCA, it is UV activated, once you put it on set the screen down in the sun for a few minutes and once it's totally cured replace the silver strip.

    Also, the yellow stuff near the solder points at the bottom looks like cap-juice... if so, your capacitors are leaking, please clean it up and replace your caps to preserve your gameboy! That stuff is pure liquid evil for electronics; it will eat away your board and traces, rendering it useless. It is in its early stages, so it can be easily saved. Then again, this was over a year ago... please consider this!

    Good vid, but they recommend you peel off the silver part on the panel to let the loca under it cure too. If you don't you run the risk of getting a spidering effect later on.

    • @chriswilliams9734
      @chriswilliams9734 Před 6 lety

      Julio Saldana whats the spidering effect ? I haven't had a gameboy in years

    • @RetroGamerReviews
      @RetroGamerReviews Před 6 lety

      Chris Williams I haven't done this mod sence 2015,but i believe it's when the loca you thought was cured starts to cure improperly and causes the loca to spread spider-web like strans across the screen.

    • @yuub0t246
      @yuub0t246 Před 6 lety

      Chris Williams it's basically what RetroGamer Review said, and it only happens to Gameboy that have had a front light mod installed with loca. Basically the loca has to have an even stream of UV light in order to dry. If a portion of it does not dry properly you run the risk of it running across portions that already have. This creates little streams of unevenly dried loca and it gives it this bothersome "spidering" effect because it looks like webs.

    • @chriswilliams9734
      @chriswilliams9734 Před 6 lety

      Julio Saldana thanks for clearing that up for me. Back when I had the gameboy advance I had a the light that connects to the top of the gameboy so that I could play low light. My second gameboy was that gameboy advance sp which already came with a backlight already installed so I never really experienced the spidering effect.

    First off, this was a VERY informative video!
    There seem to be a lot of tech-savvy people here. Understanding this is an old video, I have a question.
    Does this mod affect the battery life significantly? I wouldn't imagine it would be super noticable, but it's got me wondering.

    • @mondherbouazizi4433
      @mondherbouazizi4433 Před 5 lety +1

      I don't think it would affect the battery life as you're only adding few LEDs to the board.. But I think the light is too bright, and I would recommend adding a small resistor to reduce the brightness.
      Obviously, there are other more advanced mods that use actual backlit LCD panels, but these require some fancy equipment and a lot of painful and slow work (also they are by far more expensive than this simple one). Check this one here:
      Part 1: czcams.com/video/aBe4gtacweY/video.html
      Part 2: czcams.com/video/aBe4gtacweY/video.html
      (P.S. these are too long videos, so I recommend you skip as much as you can to see what parts you need, what modifications you need to make, and what result to expect)

    • @Weavilepichu
      @Weavilepichu Před 5 lety

      @@mondherbouazizi4433 Incredible! that is very detailed and helpful! I appreciate your time and effort :)
      I also appreciate the links, but they both go to the same video. I was able to find part 2 in the sidebar with no problems, though :)
      Given what I saw in those videos and your advice, I think I will just put a resistor in.

    Maybe it's just your camera, but it look unbearably bright to me. :/ When I did the frontlight mod on mine, I used an original SP light and a resistor. If I were to redo the mod with this kit, I think I'd hook up a potentiometer to be able to change the brightness.
    Otherwise, very nice and clean install!

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  Před 6 lety +3

      Ash King I think using an actual Color game to demonstrate would've been a better idea, the Pokémon games only have basic palettes added to color them. I think the colors already look a little weak in comparison to an actual Color game, so with the bright light, I do think you get a better effect than with original non-color games. :)

Why not keep your collectible GBC as is, and just buy a GB Boy Colour clone system? Look for more reviews of this device right here on CZcams...it's a very highly recommended console! The GB Boy Colour can be found on Amazon & eBay in, well...many different colors! Some solid, some translucent...mine is the Clear Green, and it works great!

      @RetroRepairs  Před 6 lety

      I can't recall off hand what i have, but i use a smaller conical tip, and a wedge shaped tip. I find the cone tip too small sometimes to hold enough heat unless it's very fine work

    • @RetroRepairs

    if you do a good work you add it with tiny switch on the board without destroy the case

    I figured you would've tried to use BennVenn's backlighting method. Backlit GBCs are a thing now, and it really puts the frontlight to shame. I mean, just look at this: czcams.com/video/YaXVsEz9R-Y/video.html
    It's beautiful.

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  Před 6 lety

      I've seen that. Only problem is you need to get a back lit screen from a gba (don't have), and you cut up the whole front shell which I'm not a fan of. This is a much less intrusive method, although like you mention, the quality isn't as good as a true back lit screen
