His coinage and the way he handled the riches of his many conquered peoples transformed the Greek world and its effects rippled for centuries.
Today, we’ll explore the way the coinage of Alexander the great and his successors affected the lives of the peoples under their control, and of course, enjoy their artistic mastery and mysterious messages, on the third episode of the Tetradrachm.

Maybe it's too difficult to estimate, but since this is money we're talking about, I'd love to know what the value of those coins were in each of those societies. For instance, what could an Egyptian expect to be able to purchase with that last coin? If tetradrachms were minted to pay soldiers (much like a Roman denarius might be), how many days wages would a tetradrachm minted under Alexander pay for? Again, I know the value of money is very relative, but it's something I always wonder about when seeing a coin from any culture or time period.
Hi, the current understanding is that 1 silver drachm was worth 1 day labour as the roman silver denarius, a tetradrachm 4 days. If you think that silver is valued at 0.70€ a gram at todays price...What hapenned in those days was that the silver was more valueble with a value much closer to the gold than today.
Thanks for the info!
Great video as always! I’d really love if you’d put the diameters and Weights of coins shown for better scale.

I know this is a 2-year-old video now, but you did ask: I just received my very first Alexander Tetradrachm- thanks to this channel showing me just how incredibly beautiful Greek coinage is- and I'm THRILLED. It's amazing- far more beautiful in hand than I expected. Thank you so much for your videos- I've learned a lot and they have re-kindled my interest in ancient coinage. Now for an Athenian Owl Tetradrachm...
Very insightful! Excited to begin building my collection
I know!
nice, I like those really high reliefs
Me to😅
Thank you for spending time making this video, it is very interesting and educational. I found these coins to be extremely fascinating, will definitely get a Alexander Tetradrachm in my collection
Very informative. I learned a lot from this video. It is hard to choose just one favorite successor, though. They all have such interesting stories. Thank you for directing me here! ^-^
Another terrific video. Thank you for your work!
Thank you Jerry! I think the Tetradrachm series needs a revival soon :)

Interested to know how lysimachus legend was pronounced.
Very cool. Could you do a video on big silver, 4 & 5 Thaler pieces? I think I’ve seen some from ca. 1650 but I’m not sure what purpose they served or if they were just prestige coins...
cool.
Güzel video👏

Thank you for this very informative video. For the last two years I have been studying replicas of the coin of Alexander The Great for a jewelry piece. And then I studied the back of the coins and it brought me to you. I named my son Alexander after the Leader of Men. Does anyone know where I can look into actually finding out the value of these coins? I’m sure I will have to start saving up.
I have an entire series of videos talking about buying coins, the coin market, prices, etc. Take a look at my channel page

How did you acquire such a nice set of coins, are you a dealer?
No I am not. Some very generous fellow collectors and supporters of the channel film and share footage of their coins, so I can put them all together in a video
I was gifted (and told) a fake💖But it's funny because I couldn't ask for a better looking coin.Like it was molded for me!!😍💖Totally and completely my vibe.It suites me.Hercules is HOT I mean they have made him so handsome..And zues is chillin' like a villain !!😂 One hand resting on a shield, legs slayed out in front of him, not a care in the world.Awesome 🌈🌺🎀Great video.Take Care All..xoxoxo💋💋
Can tetradrach weight 12.6 GM with same classical bust?
Unless it is very worn down, id be suspicious. Anything below 16.5 grams would be a red flag for me.
@@ClassicalNumismatics some low-quality Tetradrachm issued by Celtic culture can weight 12g and they also have the same classical bust imitating the Hellenistic world.
Unless its in the Phoenician standard, thats incredibly low
What is the value please can reply me thank you
This particular alexander tetradrachm is most likely $800+, the Antiochus is probably about $350 as well as the Ptolemy
