    I've got mine of this from taobao for 545 RMB, which was being sold with Zhixin(智芯) brand, model name X99双路 (lit. Dual-road). When it used with turbo boost-unlocked dual E5-2683v3, it throttles a little without additional cooling to the heatsinks, but still works with a single 8-pin power connector. Still, it's great to having a Task Manager filled with 56 threads for this price tag.
    BTW, I wouldn't have known about the secondary M.2 slot can be used as an NVMe slot if I don't watch this. Thank you for your great video!
    Edit: my bad, it's 8-pin, not 4-pin.

    Nice of you to cover dual socket gaming setups and their increased latency. Most expensive hardware task is sharing/synchronization. This somehow is missed by most folks who have never benchmarked single app multi-socket/multi-core.

    • @Lady_Zenith
      @Lady_Zenith Před 3 lety

      Most of the performance penalty when it comes to gaming and dual CPU comes from cache, not memory. The Haswell-E platform benefits greatly from the large unified inclusive ringbus cache. It helps games a lot, but when the threads of the game get split across multiple CPUs, they are not in the same L3 cache pool and that is what hits the performance the most. The memory latency to the other CPU is minor detail compared to the fact that you have to look in to memory at all cause the data you were looking for are not in your L3 cache. (this is the same reason why for example Skylake-X, which lacks ringbus and inclusive L3, has lower gaming IPC than old Haswell).
      I found out, that locking all the threads to single CPU can improve the performance greatly. Using SW called "process lasso" you can do that automatically, and if you split your resources right, you can game on one CPU and render on the other at the same time without performance loss. What you do not want to do it let windows manage things, they will keep throwing all threads everywhere like hot potato, causing cache trashing and sometimes major performance hits. The onyl scenario where it does not matter is when you have memory-light SW that threads ideally to all cores and the individual threads do not communicate at all, like Cinebench.

      Is there any big performance hit if this X99 motherboard does not support quad channel memory but only dual channel ? I plan to use an X99 board like this for virtualization (not interested in gaming). Also using dual channel memory architecture will allow to install 32GB x 8 modules to use it at it maximum capacity of 256 GB ?

      @MarioMazzotti Před 3 lety

      @@ciobysv23 hi Christian, I do not believe you'll have a huge performance impact for virtualization, but there certainly is some impact. Anyway, it will depend a lot on what kind of workload your virtualized environments are going to execute, if only some web servers or something on this line I think you'll be mostly fine. I would expect bigger hits on memory intensive applications like rendering and even games.

      @@ciobysv23 Actually, I think you may have little benefit on the extra 4 channels with your intended applications. I believe the DU99D4 is already a good fit for your purpose. As far as I know, this kinds of workload are not very memory bandwidth intensive. Maybe someone has a better insight. For me here in Brazil, buying the F8D would yield 40% more money, DU99D4 is already a good fit for my needs. \o

    Thanks for finding the info about the MOSFETs. I think it's interesting how many of these Chinese motherboards use VRM components of wildly varying specifications, often including MOSFETS that (at least "on paper") are much better than the ones used on mainstream motherboards by the biggest manufacturers like Gigabyte, MSI and ASUS. The 110A 2.6mOhm low-side MOSFETs used on this motherboard, for example, should be very good, and (unlike on the Veneida x99 which you recently reviewed) the high-side MOSFETs are also quite good.
    I'm still confused and curious about why these chinese manufacturers are using these 100A+ MOSFETs when mainstream motherboards don't go above 80A MOSFETs or 90A Power Stages. Mainstream motherboard VRMs will usually have more phases, or will use 2 low-side MOSFETs per phase, so mainstream motherboard VRMs are usually better overall, but it's interesting to see the different design philosophy between the different markets: Lots of cheap MOSFETs vs a few expensive MOSFETs.

    • @Miyconst
      @Miyconst  Před 3 lety +5

      When it comes to the Chinese reasoning, it's always about the $$. Apparently, it's cheaper for them to use high quality / high current MOSFETs with lower number of phases and cheaper VRM cooler in order to support CPUs with high TDP / high number of Cores.

    A quick update for the video on what this configuration is suitable for or isn't good for!
    I don't recommend using it for music production because Daws and vast plugins usually use single-core performance, not multicore.
    Unfortunately, the Xeon CPU compared to mutch recent CPUs doesn't really go high on frequency so you will be quickly limited If you use the lastest version of Daw and big plugins like the Arturia v collection.

It does support power on after power loss and „last state“. It also supports PCIe bifurcation, at least it says so in the BIOS (I have no card to test it). It is indeed picky with RAM. I tried these GPU's on a different (mono) x99 system (board name is ZX-99EV3_V1.23, when I purchased was under Machinist brand) and both cards provided expected resolution (matching the monitor higher resolution).
      The successful configuration: RT 580 = 1st PCI x16, RTX 2080= 2nd PCI x16, but I didn't checked the other possibility (also this mono x99 board has only 2 PCI x16).
      For both systems I used a 850W PSU.
      It seems to me that having 2 GPU's the system is not behaving as expected. It could be the board design, it could be my mobo that I am using, could be that I need more power for the PSU.

      @@DanielAStroe it sounds like a driver issue. Having an AMD + Nvidia GPU in one system is a mess in general. With almost every Chinese X99 board I have experienced that if I install two GPUs, the motherboard will pick a "main" GPU, and the BIOS output will be sent there, no matter where the monitor is connected. So, this is pretty much in line with what you are experiencing. Linux video drivers are not the best, and when mixing different GPUs I would expect all sorts of issues. I would install Windows with latest AMD / Nvidia drivers to see if both of the GPUs are working properly and recognized. If the GPUs work well under Windows - then it's Linux drivers to blame, if the GPUs refuse to work under Windows - then it could be the motherboard/BIOS to blame.

      Thanks a lot!
      Your input helped, I am facing an accumulation of constraints and issues.
      I could use a windows install that use both cards, which validates that hw system is still viable.
      I realized that on ubuntu I have problems with previously installed amd drivers. I have an alternate ubuntu image (which doesn't have amd drivers) and the main gpu (nvidia) was able to display high resolution out of the box (open source drivers).
      Now I have to figure out how to manage ubuntu drivers ...

      Hi. You have specified too little information about the issue, I can't help with it like this.

    Good afternoon! I bought a ZX-DU99D4 V1.31 dual cpu. And it is showing error 79. What could it be?

    • @Miyconst
      @Miyconst  Před měsícem +1

      The 79 error code usually comes up when the motherboard is not happy with the RAM. You can find list of known post codes on my blog website.

      If I get a dual socket motherboard with two CPUs, I will try to make a better guide.
