Smallest 3D Printer for Dollhouse Miniatures

- Hi guys! Today I'm introducing you to the newest member of my 3d printer collection: the Kokoni EC1. It's a super small beginner printer that I'm testing out. How well does it print and is it worth purchasing? I go through all the details in this video. I hope you find this information useful!

Part of me is very tempted, because the price is the lowest I've seen, but a bigger part wonders at needing an app--essentially, you own the hardware, but can't run it unless the company lets you, and there's nothing stopping them from dropping support or asking for a monthly subscription to use 'your' printer.
To clarify for later readers:
I was more thinking about the issue Peloton users had, where they bought the machine with 'free' access to the software, then eventually had to pay a monthly subscription to use their threadmill.
So, even if they are not forcing you onto a more expensive machine, you end up paying a monthly fee to use the one you have.
And so, the "under $200" printer ends up costing a lot more.
Mind you, I doubt there's a 3D printer currently on the market that is autonomous, but that's what stops me from buying one.
Further edit: then there are the proprietary adapter-thingie cartridges, which means you are locked buying the filament from them, as whatever price they set,while producing extra waste in the form of the box-thing.

All printing devices have 'apps' at least since the beginning of Windows... technically speaking, it's how one prints...
That's exactly the problem with the cricut. But the problem is that they lock out other software that might work with their product.
Your definitely correct in thinking that!! But a bit better way to explain that is for the machine to operate it requires hooking it up to a company's website for it to work at all. Meaning the machine or device does not have the ability to run on its own by itself. Either way as you mentioned if the company decides to stop supporting any of its older models they will become nothing more than paperweights because they will no longer work at all!!
Circuit, Glowfordge, etc are all like this. And they can force everyone to have to get a newer model even if nothing is wrong with the old one, or if someone just doesn't want a new model, either way they will have no choice !!

This is a great video and as always you explain everything so well…I’m tempted because the price is right but quite honestly, I’m getting discouraged with the need to have a 3-D printer in order to enjoy this hobby. I got into this because I enjoy working with my hands and making things from scratch but nowadays I can’t follow half the tutorials on CZcams anymore because they all require that you have a printer. I guess this is a good start but is this the future of miniature crafting?
I fell off w dollhouse minis because everything started being 3D printed. I fell in love with the hobby because of the creative freedom of turning popsicles, caps, etc into art. Kinda sucked the fun out of it for me but the more advanced artists are still crazy good at what they do!
I completely understand where you’re coming from and we are moving away from the days of popsicle sticks and polymer clay. Nothing will ever beat a well crafted hand built item, but there’s a lot of beauty in these designs as well. I love both and 3d modeling just suits my current needs way better as I have limited time :)
Sorry to but in... don't be nervous of getting into 3D printing.. I've been doing it for quite a few years now.. and it's great fun what you can achieve with them
Form factor of the Kokoni for miniatures printing is great. The quality of the print looks quite good.
I am not thrilled at the filament coming in a case that is apparently not openable. That means that one is limited to just one source for the filament. Personally, I do not like this closed garden aspect.
And, if the filament should break, it appears that one would have to ditch the remaining filament and case. I find that to be rather wasteful.
No because her white filament did break and she was able to still use it after the break
It is compatible with other brands of filament. It says so on their website.

Finally a printer I think I can handle. I'm looking it up now. Perhaps I need a treat.
It makes me want one because I’ve always had an aversion to 3D printers because the learning curve seems so steep. I feel like I’d actually use this printer because it is so beginner friendly.
This is an interesting little tool, and I can see where it could be very helpful with miniatures.
But nowhere on their website can I find replacement filament cartridges.

The proprietary filiment rolls are where they get you there are so many cheep fillaments and you can only use the ones from this manufacturer there are alot of very cheep small printers that could do this without the entrapment like the creality ender v2
Not only are there other better cheaper and easier for beginner 3d printers out there but there filiment cost 19 dollars for a 250g roll compared too 15-20$ dollar 1kg rolls of normal 3d printer pla you are getting a quarter of the filament for a premium price as well as taking a big loss on the cost of the overpriced machine I'm not holding look this up 3d printing has gotten much easier for beginners and people less tech savvy in the last few years and you can make slot if you get a normal beginner 3d printer
I think you’re absolutely right. I’m hoping the manufacturer makes these filament cases refillable so it’s not so wasteful and costly
@@TheSquaretoSparesadly I can't see them doing that... yes it looks like a great machine.. but the cartridge is just a money making gimmick cos they know u have to buy the filament from them and no one else... and that's what they want...

This video is on their website!! I am looking for a xmas present for my brother but worried he'll become addicted and obsessed, lol. Plus, I'm worried my SIL might get mad at me for getting him his first. If she got him one it would be like top of the line so i figure a baby printer mighr be a nice intro and not step on too many toes lol.
Thank you for showing this tiny 3D printer. It looks very intriguing. It would be so helpful when making models for HO gauge scenes... people, vehicles, even building parts. Please tell me how long the little vase and the little dollhouse took to print? If quick enough, this could be fun at a train or craft show.

Nice looking printer... but for a beginner i would personally recommend looking at an ender 2 pro.. it very compact, the bed is heated and the filament comes on a spool instead of in a sealed cartridge

The amount of waste caused by those cartridges is alarming. I love the idea of small/easy to use printers for those who need one but I can't get behind this specific printer.
Hi Kat! I've been watching all your videos and I was wondering if the little fridge you 3d printed would fit/work on this tiny 3d printer too. I know nothing about 3d printing and I thought maybe this could be a good starting printer for me since I only want one for my miniatures. You're awesome and so creative!!!
Hi there! Unfortunately, my fridge model is too big for this particular printer as it’s so small. However, there are many other beginner friendly printers on the market that would fit that model :)
If u can put up with the messy process go resin.. especially if its the same fridge that I have just bought from this extremely talented 3D designer
Are the 3D miniatures a 1:12 scale?

Thanks for showing this. Definitely looks very beginner friendly. I was looking at the website for the filament refills and only found the spools of filament. Do the cartridges come apart and you just replace the spool? It says you can use other filaments, but they prefer using theirs so there aren't any issues, but I didn't see the cartridges. Am I just overlooking them? Thanks again. Really informative video. Also, I think that first misprint will make a cute little decorative bowl, or planter, in a dollhouse.

Absolutely! I read through the manual and it said that the machine can only be used with their cartridges right now. I was thinking about how I could take the cartridge apart just to see if I can replace the filament in it. Admittedly, I haven’t done that yet as I’m worried I’ll ruin a perfectly good cartridge. Perhaps when I finish a roll, I’ll open up the case and do something experimenting

This was exactly what I was thinking.. obviously after one is empty... heh Seems like a waste of a good cartridge if it can't be refilled, or if at the very least, they don't give you a big discount for returning the empty one or something. You can take the cartridge apart yes, but u would have reload the spool with pla filament by hand which would take quite a lot of time... but the company won't want you to do this.. because they will loose profit..
When buy from this website for the 3D printer does it come with 2 extra cartridges? It does not say on the website
can you show us how you make and print shoes for dolls
I have a tutorial on how to create high heels :) They won't fit every doll as different dolls have varying arches but it's a good video to learn how to create one that matches your dolls

Does it have settings to change? I noticed there is a lot of stringing and blobs(zits) on the printed stuff. That might frustrate a kid or beginner as it requires extra work after printing.
Unfortunately, there aren’t any options to customize the prints. I noticed the same limitations with the quality, but kept in mind that it was built to be very basic to keep it simple. I do wish there were temperature, speed and retraction options but understand that would make it a much more complicated machine
Can you use any filament on reels or do u have to get a spesific one?
It says it’s supposedly able to use other filaments, but I can’t find any info on how to open up the cartridge in order to change the spools out.
Based on the instruction manual, the cartridges are not refillable. Perhaps the manufacturer will come out with an option that we can refill 🙏
Super interesting and look more into it as I do a lot of miniature 3d printing =) only aside that your poor phone needed a charge, admittly I am watching mine is at 9% lol

EXACTLY my issue here… that, and if it’s refillable with other filaments. If so, how do you open the cartridge to replace the filament? I reallllllly don’t like how much extra plastic is involved in making these cartridges.
I think it’s the latter for now based on the manual. While the plastic itself is recyclable, there are no instructions to refill it. I’ll have to open one up and see if it’s possible, but I wouldn’t bank on it to be honest

I think it’s a fantastic beginner option for those with little to no experience and are also limited in studio space :)

What do you do with the case the filaments come in when they are empty?
Based on the manual, it’s a one time use cartridge. So it’ll likely have to go in the recycling bin. The better option and what I’ll try is…I think I can probably open it to refill it but haven’t tried that yet as I’ve yet to finish a roll and don’t want to inadvertently break it.
I've read somewhere that this has been tried, the one guy had a bit of an issue but someone suggested a fix but I didn't pay much attention because I was looking for something else. I wonder if you use the QR code once if it might give issues later but honestly, my bro can afford the cartridges.

For my files, I would go with a bit larger of a printer since many of my models are pretty big (fridge, stove, dishwasher, etc). This printer is great for those just starting out and just learning the ropes :)
If i were to get a 3d printer, it would be this one.
Is there a clear filament available for glassware?
For glassware.. learn about resin machines.. PLA filament is only good for larger models
Also with filament printers u will see alot of lines in the print.. so for glassware resin is best..
