    What you're struggling to say is that riding a motorcycle CAN be mind clearing relaxation time OR a semi-controlled panic. THIS bike is for people looking to unwind and chill when they ride. For the owner of THIS bike... riding is his alone time to think about things rather than to see how brave he is and count the cops he can dodge

    I know this is an older video, but for some more context for a prospective buyer of a 900 custom that might come along, I have a 09 900 custom myself (with straight pipes and some sort of tuning) and usually around 75 it does feel kind of unhappy, but it smooths out almost immediately at 80-100 quite comfortably. I don't know what it is about these bikes, like if going 75 causes some acoustic resonance or something, but if you really need to get it on the highway, they can do it and relatively comfortably. I haven't really gone above 100 but just over half throttle got me there easy and the motor was ready for more (I wouldn't even go that fast outside of VERY rare circumstances, but I have to have a pretty good idea what my machine is capable of).
    Basically, the only noticeable "vibration", for lack of a better term, on this bike is at 75. It is smooth as butter beyond that and before that. To me, it feels like it has way more power than it does. Once again, my bike isn't totally stock but I don't imagine it'd feel too much different stock. I assume it's just because this thing makes its torque so low and easy. I'd have to guess OP's bike has some dirty fuel injectors or something if he's noticing bucking.
    My opinion of this bike is I absolutely LOVE it and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants an incredibly versatile cruiser. It's cool enough to hot rod around in, has enough pull to feel like a big boy, is at home on the high ways, virtually 0 maintenance (outside of typical fluid/tire changes, belt gets like 50k miles), a massive range, but not super heavy and easy to handle. And for anyone curious, with nice pipes this boy sounds MEAN. Also, it looks super slick. The only real negative I can give it is the stock seat is... not good lol.
    When I want an upgrade, I'll probably just get a new Vulcan 900 lol.
    Anyway, that's just my long-winded take on it. This is a good video, got a like from me. As stated, it's just a great bike.
    As an aside, I find it perplexing that people actually consider 900cc to be a small motorcycle engine. My grandpa had an Hydra-glide back in the 50's that was "huge" and I believe it was rocking 50hp or some shit. I get that it's all relative, but I do think some perspective on "small" is important. Small would be a 125cc Vulcan lol.

      Fukou da bad or good bike for my first one lol? Thinking of a 250 but everyone says I’ll outgrow it super fast and there’s an 07 900c for sale right In my piece range

    • @BloodPlusPwn
      @BloodPlusPwn Před 4 lety +1

      @@coopersilberling6883 Honestly, that's a hard answer. Long and short of it is, I'd say yes, it's a good first bike. It's a good first bike in the sense that it could be the only bike you ever have to get if you like it enough, and it's a fantastic machine.
      To be a little more detailed, maybe it's a good first bike. It's about as big as mid-size cruisers get, so it's certainly going to be harder to learn on in low speed maneuvers (which is by far the hardest part of riding, anyone can go fast in a straight line) than a smaller 250. Personally, I actually really like small displacement bikes as they're really easy and fun to control, but I'd have been rather disappointed had I started on one. Vulcan 900s have that reputation of being a "no/low maintenance bike" which is another reason why it's a good buy.
      *Basically, just get what you like and feel comfortable with*. Take experience into account for sure, but I wouldn't pay too much mind to what people say you should or shouldn't do. My buddy loves his 250. We all experience riding differently. Just think about what you want to get out of riding and focus on that more than just learning on it. I absolutely love my Vulcan and I'm very glad I got it (and it's my fourth and favorite bike, so it certainly has uses beyond "beginner" bike), so you definitely don't have to worry about it being a good bike if that's your question.
      For reference I've had experience with a sportster 883, sportster 1200, shadow 750 and a rebel 250 and whatever that 250 I rode in the BRC was lol, and my Vulcan blows them away for me personally.

    • @coopersilberling6883
      @coopersilberling6883 Před 4 lety +1

      Fukou da alright well I’ll definitely take that into consideration, being only 18 thought the 250 is most definitely on my side insurance wise... the 900 on the other hand is a little more expensive but not anything crazy

    • @BloodPlusPwn
      @BloodPlusPwn Před 4 lety

      @@coopersilberling6883 Well, if you're on the younger side too and cost is an issue, remember that these smaller displacement bikes resale really well and you could get a much newer 250 than a bigger 900 or so. At 18, I'd have opted for a 250 or 300 for that reason alone.

    I've just bought a 2019 Vulcan 900 classic and your description is spot on. Its big and lazy and comfortable and as mine doesn't have the screen and buzzes if you rev it too high i stand a reasonable chance of keeping my licence. Most of all it does really put a smile on your face and its so easy to ride despite its size.

      One thing to consider is replacing the front pulley to Barons 34 tooth. It will let you do 70-75mph all day just covering the throttle with no vibration and more response to do more if you want. I have a 2010 900 SE. Its 95% matte black w gray and some matte silver. The Barrons is only $150. I have had Ducati riders tell me I can hang with them and they never offer that to cruiser riders

    I could not agree more...100% a great honest review. It really is a top notch cruizer...unless you weigh 3 or 400 lbs, or you and passenger are pretty heavy, then its a little shy on power. But, for me, mine is a bobber and I only weigh 170, its everything I need. No extra power, nothing wasted, looks big, but feels really balanced and suprisingly light. Beautiful lines, great exhaust and with a little work, a real head-turner.

    I just got a 2008 Vulcan 900 classic, basically the same bike but your forks, front fender, rim and tire are like the old Sportster set up. I got this with 5740 miles on it, and I love it. I'm 71, and I've had bikes at my life. Last one was an '02 Electra Glide, and a young girl on her phone hit me. But I've been wanting to ride again and this thing came to me in a different way, so I couldn't pass it up. Just removed the windshield and replaced the turn signals. It's a good starter bike, like you said, but it's a great old dude bike, too.

      I agree Don but check out Skootwerks (Skootworks?) and Baron. They make pulleys that will make you absolutely LOVE your bike! I changed ft an rear on mine. The transmission has wonderfully spaced ratios right from the factory. Now those ratios are perfection. No need for a 6th gear!!!. I can cruise all day at 90 and she's barely breathing hard. This mod (I also installed V&H pipes, fuel re-mapping, & Cobra/K&N intake) is imo the most effective improvement possible for the willing and able 900. This bike handles like a dream and will probably outlive it's owner regardless of age. 👍👍

    If you're getting "bucking", you probably have dirty injectors. The higher RPM you go, the WORSE it's gonna get....because you're injectors are Pulsing more and more per second. If there is debris in your injector(s), it's messing up the spray pattern, causing incomplete combustion. Usually dirty injectors are caused by the bike Sitting for too long...like at a DEALERSHIP, lol... You need to run a fuel injection cleaner like Sea Foam once in a while.....Fuel injection isn't some "magic solution".....it requires maintenance and cleaning.

      @lordracula2461 Před 4 lety +2

      @@donjonson9587 No no, because it is a basic bike, it doesn't even have a tachometer. EFI is extremely expensive.
      EFI systems are great for people that don't know what they're doing but when the EFI goes wrong you need to have thousands of $$$ in your back pocket. Throttle response? Jesus christ, you should try driving some vans or cars with EFI, it's not good. A carb always has good throttle response when it is set up properly. Carburetors are great for long-term reliability and they are very cheap and simple to maintain. Murphy's law means carbs win every time.

Of course, my definition of "too much chrome" is "I can see some." :-) I love the looks of the new blacked out customs, but, still more chrome than I like. (The fork, I think.) But, looking past all the shiny stuff...that is a gorgeous bike. I love the red. Okay, I love the 900, regardless of the finish. I think I know why you hop on the Vulcan so much - it does EVERYTHING well. It does nothing poorly. It may not win metals for any specific category, but, she'll be on the winners platform in every category. Great review! loved your commentary about the intangibles of what makes it a great bike.

    I have a 2009 Classic, but most of your remarks describe it very well. It is a solid, smooth, trustworthy ride and a pleasing experience all around.
    I think the only differences between the Custom and Classic are the narrow front wheel, the drag bar and the forward pegs and controls vs. the more rearward mounted floorboards on the Classic.
    Higher ratio pulleys are made for it but it's $700 for the set. Some folks just do the larger front pulley which is $250. But a taller rear tire will also reduce highway rpm and make the speedo more accurate, and tires are a wear item anyway.

    I just bought a Vulcan 900 with 4092 miles on it. As you say it's not a racer compared to some bikes but here is what I found. A friend of mine has a 65 Shelby 289 Mustang GT 350 and the power to weight ratio is the same. His car weights 3700 lbs. and has 306 HP The Vulcan weighs 600 lbs with 50 HP. Yes, we did race. The Vulcan was slow to start but at about 40mph we were even and stayed that way up to 80 when we ended. Now to a guy like me as a teenager dreaming, in the 60s, about the Shelbys, it was cool, indeed. So the Vulcan 900 isn't a speedster but hey, if you can stay even with a Shelby GT-350 you are no slouch.

  • @firewireo

    There's something wrong with your bike, I have a 2007 and I do 80 on the highway! no vibration what so ever! Check: Alignment and balance or Rims to see if they are bent. Or even wheel bearings! these are usually the culprits especially when the bike is involved in an accident like someone cutting you off; the front wheel is obviously the first part of the bike to take the hit, which causes the problems I mentioned earlier. When a bike gets hit, the bolts, nuts and the frame gets "tensed up" they should be loosened up and then re-tightened. using manufacturer suggested torque specs.

Low to mid range power is great, but the top end range isn't as good. don't get me wrong, the power is there but nothing like a sportbike... I would recommend this as a first bike. Its very forgiving...

    Very thorough review! Thanks for sharing. I'm still trying to decide between this, a VTX , Vstar or an older Shadow for a first bike. Most people say the same thing about it feeling like it needs a 6th gear and all of the shaking on the highway but the same is said often about the VStar. I don't do a lot of highway driving but I don't want my bike vibrating out of control.

    • @donjonson9587
      @donjonson9587 Před 4 lety

      I have one and I do get the vibrating at about 75. It's really no issue as I've gotten mine to over 100mph. But it would be nicer to have a 6th for highway speeds over 80. It's doable, but I can see numb hands going that speed for over an hour.

    I totally get what you're saying about the vibrations. I took my dad's 900 Classic out for a few days while my bike was in the shop, and ridden it for a good few hundreds of miles. It really feels comfortable below 110 KPH (about 70 MPH) but anything higher than that and it'll tell you it's uncomfortable. Rode it like 70 miles from my dad's place to mine at 85 MPH (140 KPH) all the way and when I came home, I FELT that vibration when I got down, it was like my first highway trip on my 250 back in the day... not really what it's made for, but it's a big peppy engine that'll haul your ass anywhere you want it

Here in austin 85 is the standard on the toll way and 80 on i35. It buzzes like crazy at that speed compared to larger bikes. If you have not ridden a lot of bikes you may not notice it at all, or simply considered it normal

    I have the 09 custom and find it to be fun and handle extremely well. I live in the mountains and drive it like a sports bike for the most part, twisting it through the turns with no problems. I find the front end handles better with lower air pressure than the full amount listed in the manual. When the front tire is full of air, the ride is rough, hard, uncomfortable. however, when running it with say, 28 lbs, the ride is smooth for me. Less bumps in the road. I do keep a watch on it closely for sure. The engine I find to be great but as you say, it's torque is lacking at the top end. I would say though, that can do what ever I ask of it. It loves the curves. I think it is a LOT better than you stated. It's not meant to be a performance bike but can hand itself well.
