  • He was born in Egypt to a family of Greek origin - his mother and father's parents emigrated here from Greece in the 1920s. After the Suez crisis, his parents lost all their belongings and returned to Greece. Prior to his solo career, Demis Roussos performed in several musical bands: The Idols, We Five, and Aphrodite's Child.
He collaborated on the creation of albums by Vangelis, a colleague from the band Aphrodite's Child. The cooperation lasting for many years brought the best results in the vocal adaptation of Vangelis' music for the film Chariots of Fire.
The peak of his career was in the 70s, when he recorded several albums that were at the top of the charts. In 1973, his song "Forever and Ever" reached number 1 on the charts in several countries. Other well-known songs by Demis Roussos include: "My Friend the Wind", "My Reason", "Lovely Lady of Arcadia" and "Goodbye My Love Goodbye".
Demis Roussos took part in the Song Festival in Sopot in 1979. In 2000, he performed at the third edition of the International Festival of Greek Song in Zgorzelec organized by Nikos Rusketos, the founder of the band Orpheus. Later, he performed several more times at concerts in Poland.
His career lasted with less success in the 80s of the twentieth century, when m.in. together with Vangelis he recorded a cover of The Animals' greatest hit, The House of the Rising Sun. For several years, he has been recording and performing at concerts again.
In 2006, he performed at the Sopot Festival. In 2009, after a long-term break, he released a new studio album Demis, stylistically referring to the early rock of the 60s.
Roussos suffered from stomach cancer for the last few years of his life. During his illness, he did not stop touring. He died on the night of 24 to 25 January 2015 in a hospital in Athens, and five days later he was buried in the Athens cemetery. The funeral was attended by representatives of the authorities and the world of culture.
