Driving a VINTAGE Tricycle from the Philippines in Canada

  • This character of a man, 92 year old, Don Renshaw bought a pedicab on his trip to the Philippines in 1971. The story of its adventure just to get to Canada is almost more interesting than the bike itself.
What do you think of this vintage motorcycle and sidecar combo?

3:02 The way Lolo said "No, it's not a rickshaw. That's Chinese. It's a pedicab. Filipino pedicab." shows how much he value the history of that pedicab and the challenges before it actually arrived to Vancouver...He's indeed very proud that he owned not just a Filipino pedicab but a Filipino culture...🤗🤗🤗

MSJ I completely agree with you, but I want to say that the Philippines is a developing country so we cannot change everything overnight. Tricycles like these are just motorcycles with sidecar. Everything causes pollution too. I want you to know that here in the Philippines, tricycles are often used because of its function that it can squeeze into residential areas that mostly cannot be accessible by typical vehicles as the cities urban layouts are mostly congested. I myself would prefer a place like that of a developed country. Even though tricycles has problems, it copes up with the current status of the Philippines. A tricycle, considering the tight areas of most residential areas where average wage earners live, can be useful in certain occasions, some tricycles can save lives during emergencies, Tricycle driving is also a source of income for some people, not all works in an office or maybe have their own business, there are even people with diplomas and all educational backgrounds but later became a tricycle driver because life here is just that hard. Tricycle drivers themselves dislike tricycles that have too much smoke. Even in times of pandemic, these tricycles became very useful in travel as one is isolated when commuting, As most of filipinos do not own cars. And I want you to know that most tricycles obey road laws because if they don't, nothing will be left to feed their familiies. Yes there exist stubborn drivers, but not all of them are like that, You know, most traffic here are caused by car owners, who parks their car on the road, Most tricycles are in terminals. I myself would like to see change in my country, until then, we cannot justify things.

I knew it! Despite what everyone thinks, every tricycle design is unique to every places in Philippines. And this tricycle looks just like the designs in Zamboanga. If you go to other places like dumaguete and bacolod, their design is different. If you go to dipolog city which is the same region as zamboanga city, the design is also different. By design I mean some places have inclined tricycles. Some have open backs where passengers can also sit. I hope he enjoyed his stay in Zamboanga. Back then it was an american headquarters after the spanish. After it was bombed during the japanese-american war, only some beautiful ancient buildings remained including the city hall. Tricycles are locally made from scratch unlike vehicles that are imported from other countries. So it's fair to say they are also an image of the city
